Mopeds/Scooters- the new menance?

Do you need a license or need to wear the proper equipment (headgear) to ride one of these? What's the age to ride on because it seems a lot of the kids are riding them these days and not following the rules of the road (cutting infront of you, running red lights, not wearing gear, etc). Has anyone else noticed this?

I hate to sound old , but these things are dangerous. As soon as enough kids are hurt these things will be outlawed if not already. They're a modern version or the gocart with the lawmower engine that used to be around in the 70's.

you have to be 15 i know in jersey for a moped license, and if you have to wear a helmet on a bike, yes you have to wear one on a moped. they are nuissances just because they cant go fast enough. in a 40 ill go like 50-55, and they can only go like 40-45, i get annoyed. plus you look so gay riding half a motorcycle

yes you sound old. thats ridiculous. motorcycles arent outlawed and last i heard they were still a little more dangerous than something with the power of a weed whacker. plus they have been around for like 40 years, i think something may have happened by now if it was going to. plus the biggest danger to people riding mopeds/scooters/motorcycles when the rider is properly trained is a person in a car. ive seen so many bikes get cut off and even a couple guys have to bail because a car jumped in front of the bike on a highway assuming cause they are bigger they are faster, when they arent even close

i've got a motor scooter it's great but i can only remember wearing a helmet once on it. Lucky for me , i live on a dead end block in s.i. and no cops really ever drive around my area . I never go on highways though .

We were just briefed on this yesterday. This vehicle which has a motor is indeed a motor vehicle, and is therefore subject to all the rules of the road. For some reason they have become more prevalent this year, and we have been receiving complaints. You need a license, and the vehicle needs a registration from the dmv. You need a helmet, and you must follow the NYC Vehicle Traffic Law (signal, stop at lights, etc). Now, does anyone know why theyre all of a sudden so popular? Were they in a rap video or something?

Some higher-end scooters these days, like the ones made by Aprilia and even Honda, can probably rival the pick-up of some lower horsepower cars (ok, maybe that's going too far, but a 250cc engine, without much weight to carry, will provide some kick).

Also, they're obviously a lot easier to ride than motorcycles are, with the operator not having to bother with shifting through gears, and are priced at a fraction of the cost of your basic sportbike (for the cost of the most generic, entry level street bike, you can get a top-of-the-line scooter).

And yeah, even though they're pretty gay, you do see them in more & more videos, not to mention they've become a staple at events like Spring Break and the like.

I'll confess to having rode one while on vacation last summer. And even though, as a biker who has only owned performance motorcycles, I wouldn't have thought they'd be much fun to ride, they actually were. I'd never own one, but understand why others would.

Accually, I'd take a go-cart anyday over a moped. I feel much safer, and you can get them really fast. And most people still make 'em outa lawnmower engines, although you can also buy go-cart motors for them.

What I really find perplexing is trying to understand how people think these things are COOL! When did riding around on a little faggy motorized scooter become hip? I can't help but laugh every time I see a kid riding one of these things with a "Man, I kick ass" look on his face. How are these kids not overwhelmed with embarassment when seen riding one? I wouldn't show my face in public on one of these retarded things. Pretty soon, little 15 year old wiggers are gonna be riding around on Rascal scooters thinking they're bad-ass.

Even though Mopeds are UBER-Gay, let's be honest. If your friends are still on pedal bikes and you have a Moped, you're cool. Plus you're motor powered which means you can go farther, faster. I understand that.
