That's truly a tough one. There were a lot of bands I was into during the 90's that were very underrated. For the 1990's I would say Fear Factory. They didn't get big until a shitty cover song Gary Numan's "Cars"(worst song on the cd Obsolete, wasn't even on the first edition of the cd. They put out a digi-pack with 5 bonus tracks and about 5 months later it got popular with next to 0% airplay. They then released Obsolete for a third time minus 4 of the bonus tracks with Cars as an extra track that didn't exactly fit well on a friggin CONCEPT ALBUM!!!!) Demanufacture is one of the most underrated albums of the 90's. It was very influential. If anyone likes that corny genre named NU-Metal, Fear Factory's Demanufacture clearly influenced most of these new & horrible bands that all sound the same.

Of all the Seattle bands I think both Alice In Chains and Soungarden took a back seat to Nirvana and Pearl Jam.
Soundgraden was the first to have a major record deal and AIC was the first to have a video on MTV.
Nirvana was way over-blown ( no pun on the whole shotgun thing ). I actually got more into their stuff when Cobain was dead.
But I think AIC was the best of the bunch.

soul asylum is/was bahdass! their best album was the ...and the horse they rode in on one. Screaming Trees was the MOST underrated band of the 90's tho. They only had that one hit "I nearly lost you" but their album was excellent and their lead singer (Mark Langleland) put out a kick ass solo album.

I was grungy in the 90's :)

Even though they formed in the mid 80's they still made albums throughout the 90's, and still remained obscure. The best band ever: FAITH NO MORE

the most underrated band of the 1990s would have to be yo la tengo.

yo la tengo is one of the few bands i would die for. i love them that much. they are that good.

you've all heard of the smashing pumpkins, you've all heard of the foo fighters, etc...yo la tengo is one of the most hardworking bands ever and they fuckin rock.

yo la tengo for president.

How can you call any band that got multiple songs off multiple albums on mtv underrated? More likely they're over exposed.

I agree with Screaming Trees and Yo La Tengo, but how about Primitive Radio Gods? Another one hit wonder that was off a great album.

Superdrag are great so i'm going to nominate them for a great underrated band, no label support so they had to sell their records based on touring and word of mouth but now they're an Indie band so they said "F you" to being on a major label and went out on their own.

Just a quick note: underrated is not the same as unknown. For example, you could say you think Mark McGwire is an underrated 1st baseman, though every baseball fan in the world knows who he is.

oúverúrate

To overestimate the merits of; rate too highly.

bands like the smashing pumpkins, foo fighters, and marilyn manson are definitely overrated. i'm not saying they aren't talented but to me these bands seem a bit too gimmicky and they try to use that to sell records and whatnot.

other bands i think are underrated:

nada surf
cake
the dandy warhols
luscious jackson
cibo matto
rasputina
that dog
the rentals
unwound
etc..

the thing is that most of the bands that are underrated don't even care. they're happy with how things are for them and i think that's cool.

and i'm getting sick of using the term "overrated" and "underrated". it's as silly as saying a band has "sold out" or something.

i'm not using these terms no more.

Considering the current popularity of Queens Of The Stone Age, hell, even not considering that, KYUSS has to be my pick for the most underrated. They were just so tighe and has such and influence on so much of the stuff out there today. Blues For The Red Sun and Welcome to Sky Valley are just two AMAZING ALBUMS!

without a doubt Steve Earle and the Dukes. Since becoming clean (and even before that), Earle has put out some of the most fantastic albums of recent memory: Copperhead road, Train-a-comin, I Feel Alright, el Corazon, the Mountain, Transcendental Blues (not to mention what he's done recently)

His work jumps the borders of genres, and helped expand the notion of what alt country is. Not too mention that he may be the finest songwriter of this era. His music has been ignored for far too long.

even though they were late 90's Texas Is The Reason is my pull, that band more or less molded what most of bands like saves the day, thursday, further seems forever and countless other bands are doing now...oh and in also since most people didnt actually start admitting to liking them til 2000 im going to say Weezer. those are my two.

even though he's come to enjoy quite a bit of popularity, i'd still have to say that jeff buckley was most underrated. compared to what he deserved, he was certainly underrated

there are just so many others (most of which have been mentioned), among them...

screaming trees
jawbreaker
g love and special sauce

The La's.

Well, technically 80's, though they didn't hit Stateside until like around '90 or '91.

And Brit bands like The Manic Street Preachers, Pulp and Blur were criminally ignored here in America. It's horrible that most people think of Blur as a one-hit band or as the "Wooo-HOO!!! guy"...bah...

BLIND MELON without a doubt is the most underrated band of the 90's.

I used to do a little, but a little wouldn't do it, so a little got more and more. I just keep trying to get a little better, a little better than before.

Some good underrated bands have been listed... I would add Quicksand. A great NYC-based band that never got the attention it deserved. A lot of what these bands are doing today, Quicksand did it 13 years ago, and did it 100 times better. In their all-too-brief time around they put out two amazing albums. They also did a tremendous cover of the Smiths' "How Soon Is Now?" If you can, pick up some of their stuff, particularly their second album, "Manic Compression."
