View Full Version : A question about Cable Modems

I usually don't bring this kind of this to the board but I need help and have a vested interest in keeping the cable company from sending a truck out to my house. I just got broadband at the house and after hooking it up I can't seem to get the modem to recognize that it has been activated. It's on a clean line and is hooked up properly, I've tried cycling the power on and off and the cable company says that they activated the account. Does anyone have any clue what I can do to fix this fuckin' thing?

I was having a similar problem when I hooked my computer up to the cable modem; I got the cable modem to turn work by turning off the TCP/IP stuff on my computer and then turning it back on, after the cable modem was connected to my computer and turned on.

so you are saying you have a "green" or illuminated "online" light but still can't browse?
i am familiar with your "vested interset". the few times i needed the cableguy to come out i had a bunch of work on my hands. i would say continue to work with the cable company over the phone. If it comes down to where they have to come to your home, tell them your going on vacation and you will call them back in two weeks. In the meantime see if someone on the board or elsewhere can help.
If it comes to you absolutely needing the cableguy visit, then you have no choice but to make some "temporary rearrangements"
i have a linksys router which does DHCP. sometimes I have an "online" light but can't surf/browse. I have to
>go to the command line and type "winipcfg" this brings up a small window
> select my ethernet adapter
> and perform a release and then a renew.
NOTE: I have the latest/greates Windows98 SE, not sure if it works the same for all OS's
the cable company from what i understand uses DHCP (randomly assign you an ip that can change periodically)
best of luck!

Does your modem line come fairly direct from the outside, or do you have splitters along the way?
When I hooked up my mom's cable modem, I had what sounds like your problem. The line went through two splitters to get to the computer. Removing one and making it a more direct connection solved the problem immediately.

Thanks for attempting to help guys, apparently it seems the signal coming from the cable in the ground was not strong enough, I plan on buying an amplifier today after work, either that or it's time to start hiding TVs and waiting for the cable guy.

A better solution is to reroute your cable so that the first interace is with the computer and it splits off after that.
You should try the winipcfg route, as suggested above making sure to release then renew ALL.
I'd also make sure you have your account setup configured properly. If you're using optonline for example, the mail server is mail.optonline.net for both incoming and outgoing mail servers.
