I remember this torture from elementary school and JR high.

WHY??? Why submit this torture to eager young minds? What was this supposed to teach us?

As the clip from O and A goes:

Swing your partner round and round
Punch um in the face
and Throw um on the ground...

ahh those were the days

I had no idea other classes did this.

In fourth grade I had one of my cooler teachers ive had through school but for some reason he made us square dance. I didnt understand it and forget how to do it but he taught us it. He was the only teacher in the school to do it too. He was cool but such a weirdo.

It was ok though because I got to square dance with the only chick who had boobs in the 4th grade. Good stuff.

I remember playing with the parachute, but we never square danced once.

I think this was the infiltration and indoctrination part of the "great folk scare " of the late 50's and early 60's. it was thought that our allies "the British Invasion" eradicated the problem but " sleeper and mutant cells", ie (party) line dance and contra (nuff said) dancing persist to this day.

I think it was an excuse to just play a record and not have to teach.

At least, that's how it was at my (Catholic) grammar school.

But, then again, we also had a school square dance, which everybody (and their parents) went to, so you could participate even if you were a 2nd grader.

My siblings went through this too, and they went to public school.

I always managed to have fun, mainly because I hated the "Presidential Physical Fitness Test" much much much more than having to hold some boy's sweaty hand or do-si-do.

What I really want to know is what was the mile run supposed to teach us? Or how about newcombe?

I miss the parachute. And the giant ball that my gym teacher had to inflate with a hair dryer. . .that was the coolest thing I'd ever seen when I was 6.
