View Full Version : What's worth more, a man or a cow?

The average person in sub-Saharan Africa earns less than $1 a day. The average cow in Europe -- thanks to government subsidies -- earns about $2 a day. And therein lies a tale of the power of European farm interests, and the weakness of African economies. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A17961-2003Jun20.html)
an interesting article.

This article although using some relevant facts is complete and guarded rhetoric aimed at slandering European industries not cooperating with US bio-engineered products. (the recent WTO ruling against the US.) They easily point the finger at European nations for actually having some standards on what goes into their products. If it were up to America...everyone would be eating genetically mutated burgers from cloned cows or growth induced grade Z chicken all to be purchased in Super value meals at their local fast death restaurant. Besides, the US is just playing "the suffering" card due to the fact that their industries are hurt by this act. I don't seem to recall Africa eating well before such rulings coming down either....so is the Bush or the US really concerned about African starvation?
People will easily point towards European competitiveness as "sowing misery", while the US actually blows up the world one nation at a time and induces strict neo-liberal economic policies throughout the 3rd World. Have a look at all the devastation we've brought to Central and South America via wars, operations, economic policies, etc... But that's "development" and the "furtherment of democratic values"....right?

Yup...always surprised at how all problems in the world can be traced back to the United States. I wish we had those European standards. I mean, I want Mad Cow too!
And too bad we aren't as concerned about African starvation as Europe. They rock! Thank god they went in and fixed that Rwanda famine...oh shit...wait a minute...

Take it how you like. You all can talk and pat the US on the back for such achievements in one area while they destroy another with the same volition...but in the overall realm of global occurences, we hold and run the show. You don't blame a local government official for the problems in Washington, now do you. Everything works from the top down and the US is the richiest, most powerful/ influencial, rogue nation of them all, with conquests of empire. The US certainly doesn't care about starvation in Africa, nor the freeing of Iraqi people or any other guise they throw around for carrying out actions. You can attempt to buy into it...I choose to see it as it is. And it's not bitterness or hate that drives me to such ideas, it's quite the opposite...love of humanity...not just an American version of such. (let the defeated suffer in silence...right?) But who really needs to look at our own nations' actions when we can point out the wrong doings of the others...like the evil Europeans...right?

Ah, the new twist to FiveB...
NO country or nation other than the USA may be criticized as long as it can be brought back to the USA.
Settle down, Francis.

I have a question for FiveB, or anyone else. If people should be concerned about humanity as a whole, then saving lives/easing suffering/longer life expectancy is the goal, I would think.
If lives are saved, and people live longer and happier, then the world population is going to continue to expand exponentially.
So, where's the food supposed to come from? If bioengineering is so terrible, how are we supposed to feed the ever-growing world population without genetically engineered food products, but by using only wholesome, organic food products? Is someone going to come along and invent a perpetual food-generating machine?
Unless I'm incorrect, the ultimate goal of bioengineered foods is to produce above and beyond the constraints of nature. If we're not able to do that, then how?

There's no such thing as a world food shortage. It's distribution that is the problem.
