They say when you are driving, or walking down the street, you should feel safe if a cop is around you. But im terrified of them when im driving.

Get this, I was in a neighborhood going about 28, limit is 25. I know theres a cushion and a cop pulls up behind me. Next thing, i know hes tailgating me. But because im scared shitless of getting a speeding in a residential zone ticket, im going like 20-25 mph to be safe.

Not only is he just tailgating me, hes staring at me, i can tell cause id check my mirrors and him and his gay 70's mustache were beating down on me. I had to make sure i was doing EVERYTHING right so he wouldnt ticket me. And its a big deal for me if i get a ticket, cause then my insurance flies up.

When we pull to the intersection between stringfellow road, i get across the road and into my neighborhood. He didnt follow me that far, but for about 4 minutes he followed me every turn, every where i went.

I dont care what they say, if a cop is driving behind me, ill probably get into more of an accident cause ill be worried about the cop, not the pedestrian thats about to run infront of my vehicle.

Anyone else feel this way? or am i just a paranoid wreck. And id love to see what Chris the Cop says about this.

I usually feel safer when there's a cop around, but if there's a patrol car behind me when I'm driving, I freak out like you did, so I understand what you're saying.

Many people feel uncomfortable when followed by a cop, even when not speeding or doing anything wrong.

A cop is an authority figure that we're hopefully taught to respect at an early age. Authority figures can be scary, especially when they have the power to issue tickets!

I only get nervous about the police when I'm driving (I tend to cruise at 85 on the GSP!)

I do feel safer on my walk to work when I see the PA cops around (although sometimes I think, "Uh oh, what do they know that I don't?")

In the recent weeks, NY cops have been ticketing everyone including a pregnant woman sitting on subway steps (insanity!). Its not unheard of. Some cops take advantage of their authority and position. But, if you're not doing anything wrong and you're caught in a situation like that, you can always take it to court. Here's a quick story:

My aunt was pulled over and given a ticket for not wearing her seatbelt. She stayed calm, accepted it and then fought it. She won because she proved it is impossible for her to drive the car without it. (The car's designed not to start unless the driver buckles up.)

The point is to obey the law and don't freak out. You'll only add fuel to their fire. And try not to judge them all by that tailgating cop.

I'll agree with HordeKing and refer you to Jocefus' advice. I always find it weird when people see me and ask, "what's wrong?". 9 times outta 10, the answer is "I thought this would be a good spot to read my paper". Just because a cop is around is no reason to assume that there's anything wrong, with you or your surroundings. (A cop is a person in your neighborhood....). If a cop pulls up behind you on a 2 lane road, pull to the right. If he follows, you may be fucked. 75% of the time my car is in motion, I'm responding to a call, whether my lights/sirens are on or not. So, just get outta my way and help me get there faster--youd want that if you were the one waiting for me.

thx to the stupidity of bloomberg, cops have become pariahs. if there's one near me, i non-chalantly try to get the fuck out of dodge. i didnt wanna sleep on the subway today because of the ticket insanity. i've never been robbed while sleeping. ironically, now i will. by the city.

In the city maybe, but im in mahwah, where 9 times out of 10 if a cop notices a kid under 25 he follows him for a few minutes, sometimes pullin us over and harrassing, searching, all that fun stuff. nothing goes on here and they have too much time and i think they get bored. it sucks
