Kournikova Pulls Out Of Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England -- Anna Kournikova has pulled out of Wimbledon because of a back injury.

The Wimbledon referee's office said Monday the Russian had notified the All England Club of her withdrawal Friday. The tournament begins June 23.

A tearful Kournikova withdrew from the DFS Classic grass-court tournament in Birmingham last week after aggravating her injury in practice.

Kournikova, a Wimbledon semifinalist in 1997, has won only one of 10 matches this year on the WTA Tour and withdrawn from a series of tournaments with leg and back problems. She has slipped to No. 77 in the rankings.

Kournikova hasn't played in a tour-level tournament since retiring from her opening match at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C., on April 9.


Why are they making this front page news on ESPN.com? Let's face it, she's never won a major singles Tennis event and probably never will. She is the Jason Sehorn of tennis, a pretty face who dates celebrities and who doesn't have the talent to win in her chosen profession. The only reason she gets pub is because of her ass. Get her off the sports page and into the gossip page and keep her there.

I was watching the Man Show last night and they did this thing called Camp Kournikova where girls who were beautiful but not achletecially inclined trained for tennis. I thought it was pretty funny.

Anyways, the reason she is so popular is because she is hot. If I had a chance to watch either her or the Williams sisters play, I'd watch Anna. Maybe it's cause I'm not a big tennis fan or the fact that I think with the other head too much.

It is sad that ability is sometimes overshadowed by looks. I remember seeing more endorsements for Kornikova than the Williams sisters. I think I saw a Wrigley ad with one of them in it. Anyways, it's cause sex sells, and an average tennis player who looks like her will do sell more than the Williams. It's sad but true.
