I can't believe that I'm actually going to post about this. I'm currently watching a classic Jake Roberts-Scott McGhee match from a 1985 MSG card. The referee is really making me crack up because he looks just like the late singer John Denver. I doubt that anyone, besides me, remembers this match or this referee. But it got me thinking about some of the classic and funny referees of the past.

-NWA ref Tommy Young- I used to love it when Ric Flair would shove him and he would shove Flair right back.

-WWF ref Gilberto Roman- The little ref who was always getting abused by the midgets because he wasn't much bigger than them.

-WWF ref Jack Lotz- He took the all time worst ref bump during "The War to Settle the Score" match between Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper. Lotz was barely even touched and he stayed motionless in the ring.
I went to an MSG event in the summer of 1987 and he refereed a tag team title match between the Hart Foundation and the British Bulldogs. I never saw a slower count in my life whenever the Bulldogs were covering the Harts. Hey, I was only 12.

-Of course who can forget heel referee Danny Davis. That was of the best angles at the time.

Here's a interesting fact. The first time Randy Savage wrestled George "The Animal" Steele on Saturday Night's Main Event in 1985, the referee was Dean Malenko. Also, if you check out some of the WWF events from the early 90's, Shane McMahon would occasionally appear as a referee.

My favorite was always Tommy Young. Others are Tiger Hattori of New Japan and another one from Georgia Championship Wrestling whose name I can't remember...he had blonde hair down to his neck, kinda resembled a thinner Tommy Rich. Anyone remember?? I think it was Scruffy McSomething....

While he's fresh in my mind on this referee nostalgia trip, how about Aggasi impersonator Rick Hazzard in World Class Championship Wrestling.

Tim White is always fun.

Tommy Young certainly rocks, but I liked Teddy Long before he started working angles. I thought he was a great ref.

And I remember a WWF ref by the name of Dick Kroll, I believe, who was pretty sound.

And RIP of course, Joey Marella, Gorilla Monsoon's son, tragically killed in a car accident on the way to a show. The third man in the ring with Hulk and Andre, he probably would have been a fixture for a long time.

And I believe Brady Boone was refereeing for WCW when he died the same way.

And who remembers a WWF referee who looked like an owl. Actually, he was not far away from Jack Elam, a Hollywood Character actor who worked many westerns, but is probably best known to our circles as the crazed doctor in the ambulance in Cannonball Run. There was ref like this, thick eyebrows, bulging eyes, and dark features. I forgot his name, however.

Who remembers any AWA referees?

And who can forget Bill Alphonso, who took the title of greatest heel referee from Danny Davis with the ECW run.

Nick Patrick is the best. Great ref, outstanding heel ref. Heel Nick Patrick blows heel Alfonso out of the muthafucking water. Just go ahead and force Earl "You screwed Bret" Hebner to retire, because Patrick should so be senior ref in the WWE.

"Lil Naitch" Charles Robinson is pretty damn solid as well.

I forgot about the female referee from the 80's Rita Marie. One of the many people who would jump on the Vince McMahon lawsuit bandwagon.
