The only advice I can give you is to see your health care provider. I wouldn't solicit mental health advice on this messageboard or any other for that matter. Don't play with your health-see a professional!!

I used to be anxious around people a lot. Extrememly shy and nervous. Then one day I said "Fuck It" and stoped worrying about what other people think about me, which I realized was my problem.
Of course, you may have a chemical imbalance, as the commercials say, but that is probably just to get you to buy their product.
See your doctor.

What does Meve do without healthcare? I don't want to be too mean but that's everyone's answer to everything in here. You might have money or health insurance, but some of us don't.
I have none. That's why I come here sometimes to ask quesitons because I will never get enough money to see any doctor. At least for a long time. And if I had a few hundred dollars, you can be damn sure I'm not going to waste it on therapy. There's more important bills like your car, rent and food.

Moe - That's a fact that many people don't realize. They are completely unaware of the issue and the fact that this or similar forums, are the only means of getting knowledgable advice as to what to do.
MEVE - You don't give nearly enough information to make any type of guess as to what's going on with you. You indicate that you don't know "anything" about anxiety disorders, so I'll tell you some general facts.
Anxiety disorders are the most frequent reasons people go into therapy. Quite a few of my clients have or had them, although some unconcsiously utilize the the "anxiety" as a shield to protect them from some deep seated trauma. Very few problems are as simple as they seem.
They are almost all treatable, and with the notable exception of OCD, often curable.
Medication can help but is not always necessary, and in some instances may be counterindicated.
Anxiety disorders cover a pretty wide gamut from Generalized Anxiety Disorder, to specific phobias, and OCD.
The most common specific phobia is fear of snakes.
If you'd like to talk about this in private, please e-mail me with as much information as you can, especially descriptions of your symptoms, when they occur, what they feel like, what triggers them, what returns you to baseline, how long it takes to return to baseline, what medications if any you currently take, and any other information you feel relevant.
If you can see your internist to rule out a medical condition and see a therapist for a clinical workup.

Moe, don't you live with your parents? Do they have insurance?
Can't you stay on theirs still somehow? After college and before
grad school, I just paid COBRA for a couple of years and stayed
on my dad's insurance - and I wasn't living with them. Or
through work, perhaps?
Also, if it really is some sort of anxiety disorder (Meve hasn't
even described it, not that it's really relevant because regardless
the advice would remain the same: if it's that big of a deal, go to
a doctor. Nobody should be getting diagnoses from starngers on
the internet), then it is serious enough to warrant tightening
your belt and saving up some cash to see a doctor at least once.
I don't really think something like car payments are more
important than your mental health, and most of us I know have
expenses that we could cut were it necessary.

FYI - as I understand it, there are a number of non-profit organizations that provide therapy and charge their clients based on their ability to pay. An example of a very good one is The Women's Center in Northern Virginia. I don't know specifically of any in the NY/NJ area, but I understand that they are out there.
If a person is feeling anxiety or depression, they shouldn't rule out thereapy as an option just because they don't have health insurance. A local community health center might be the place to start. If there isn't one around, or you don't know where one is, see if your state has a state Psychological Association. They should be able to direct you to programs that provide free or reduced rate counseling.

Anxiety sucks. Meve, just saying/typing it out loud must have felt good as a first step to dealing with it and its not like you were asking a message board for a diagnosis or a scrip for zoloft.

Moe, don't you live with your parents? Do they have insurance?
Believe me, we looked into that as I was nearing the point where they'd drop me from the policy. I don't remember the particulars, but it was either not possible or too expensive.
As for a job, I obviously need to get my ass to work. I have no excuse for that except to say that a lot of jobs don't offer insurance, let alone good insurance that would cover mental health care. Even if I was lucky enough to find a "career" job instead of a "filler" job, it would take a while before I could get on the insurance plan.
But Yea Meve, you need to give more info on your condition. I was getting panic attacks and intense feelings of anxiety suddenly. Do you get that? Do you wake up and not roll out of bed for 2 hours? Do you hear voices? I don't know, but let the King know so he can point you in the right direction.

There are at least 25 people on the board in exactly this situation. No insurance. Not covered by their parents. No job. No assets. and/or estranged from their parents.
Let me make a suggestion.
If you don't want to solicit psychological advice from a message board, you can post about other stuff.
For those, who need help or information and/or have no other place to turn I urge you to keep posting and/or contacting me in private as the majority do.
