Last night I went to an annual publishing event at the Seaport. I had never gone before and a friend snagged an extra ticket. I was kind of ambivilent about going because I really didn't want to run into people I used to work with at other companies and I'm just really bad a schmoozing. But, I figured, free food, open bar-- how bad could it be.
I'm sitting with my friend when we see some other people we work with. They invite us to their table. We were actually trying to avoid one of them because all she does is whine and complain. We couldn't really say no, so we sat down. It wasn't too bad. I was talking with some other people and was able to block out the whining and bitching: "When are they going to open up the buffet?! I'm hungry! Blah blah blah!!!" Finally, word circulates that the buffet was open. Well, the cow and some of her hens went up stairs to get food. A few of us stay behind to watch purses and to save the table. They come back down so we get up. Now mind you, our drinks and bags are at our seats, clearly defining occupancy. We're gone for ten minutes. We come back and there are people in our seats. The cow is talking away with the friends she's invited, completely ignoring us standing there like idiots holding plates of food. One girl's boyfriend had to go across the patio and get another table and chairs. The cow doesn't even acknowledge it! I set my plate down and reach over to get my drink and my bag and the woman sitting there says, "Oh! You can leave your bag here." Wouldn't a normal person have said, "Oh, am I in your seat?"
So, I ate dinner and went home. Now I know why I never go to these events. I work with morons.
