View Full Version : Do you have a first memory from your time on earth?

My earliest memory in life is my mother telling me that "today your are 3 years old." It was morning and I was just waking up.
Not too long ago I read that memory actually begins at 3 years old, which kind of freaked me out. I guess I was right on target - a very strange coincidence.
Does anyone else have a first memory?

one of the only things i remember before my first day of Kindergarten was watching a soap opera and seeing an animal(maybe dog) stealing away some food from an abandoned baby, and running to my Mom and crying...
then going with Mom and Dad to pick up my newborn baby brother, I was 4 soon to turn 5... i remember the nurse asking me if I wanted to hold him and I got nervous I would drop him and refused... in the car i asked why he was crying and Mom said he was hungry...

I had just backhanded some kid in the nose who wouldn't stop kicking my foot, which was EXTREMLY unsusal for me because I was never and am not a violent person. I was in 2nd o 3rd grade
I still can remember the little drops of blood that he left on the way to the office which was exactly where I was going.
My next actual memory is sitting at the dinner table as my mother finally admits to me that there is no Santa or Easter Bunny. It was like the next year.

Just curious: you have no memory whatsoever prior to the 2nd (or 3rd) grade?

My first memory is also my first anti-social moment.
My mom used to take me for a walk everday in the baby carriage. We'd pass this really loud and REALLY scary crossing guard by the school. She had bright read hair and garish lipstick. Everyday, she'd pick me up and kiss me and just scare me. My mom stopped to chat with her and I remember thinking to myself, "If I pretend I'm asleep she'll leave me alone."

I'm not sure. Let's see how this thread turns out. To be honest with you, I would think that everyone has a memory of their first day of school, if not earlier.
If first grade is totally wiped out, you may have Alzheimers...or maybe you just smoked too much pot.

I was 8 days old, ressting on a pillow as someone spread my legs wide.
Suddenly a maniac with a knife appeared and moved towards me while a crowd of onlookers cheered him on.
I tried to resist, but couldn't stop him, even with a spray of urine. My penis hurt for weeks.
Oh well, at least I got a sip of wine afterwards to knock me out. (Apparantly these bozos never considered giving me the wine, or general anesthetic first.)

it's funny, when i was younger, i could vividly recall past events in my life. and the older i get, i loose the younger one's year to year. i guess that brain of mine can only hold x amount of memories, no more.
here's mine. when i was 2, i walked off from my parents at my dad's company picnic in a huge park. suddenly i realized i didn't know where i was and where my parents were. i still remember the feeling of total isolation (how transcendental). i must have made a scene, bc this clown performing, returned me to my parents moments later.

I was about three years old, and decided to sneak out of the house and ride my tricycle in the middle of the street. I actually made it about a couple hundred yards down the road before a neighbor, on her way home, recognized me and drove me and my trike back home. My mom, who was busy with my baby brother, never even realized I was gone.

I do. I was like a year and a half old, and I clearly remember jumping off the curb down the street from my house, planning to splash a puddle, but landing and finding out it was a good 4-5 inches deep, and my pants got soaked. Mainly I just remember being so scared that my mom would be mad at me for ruining my clothes.

this is probably something for horde king, but it seems (atleast for me) that the better majority of early memories are associated with something bad or there being a repercussion for an action. but later in my life i can remember "happy" moments.

I remember being about two years old and sitting behind my mom's bed, playing with colorforms (yellow, blue and white) on the glass patio door and then, deciding that I was bored, turning around and finding some styrofoam peanuts in a packing box. I ate several of them because I thought they were fun to crunch.
I also remember one night waking up in the middle of the night (I think my parnets were having a dinner party?) and thinking that some evil mutant was taking over my brain becuase my forehead hurt, so I got up and looked at myself in the mirror (I was wearing red winnie the poo footie pjs) and I saw a line on my forehead. Now that I think back about it, it must have been after I cracked my head open on a door when I was two, and that must have been the scar. But it was before I turned five, becuase it definitely happened while I lived in Boston.
I also remember wearing my Wonder Woman underoos EVERYWHERE and one summer jumping off of my porch (my downstairs neighbor was there to catch me) pretending to be her. I think once I jumped off the porch becaus eI wanted to be a watermelon seed (we were spitting them over the edge) too. I know both of these events happened, but I forget which one I actually remember and which one I've been told I did so many times that it SEEMS like a memory.

My first memory (that I remember) was when I was 3 years old. I climbed on top of the toilet seat and then up onto the top of the sink and opened the medicine cabinet and saw this flat shiny thing. My dad at the time used to shave with an old fashioned Gillette "safety" rasor, a double edged razor blade. I picked up this razor blade and squeezed it in my hand and heard it crack. I opened my hand it blood was gushing out and I panicked and slipped off the sink and as I fell, hit my balls on the edge of the sink and ended up flat on my back screaming before my mom came in and found me and she flipped out.

hot! - just kidding. Anyway I have some bits and pieces of the first apartment we lived in when I was 0-5, some of which I think were around 3 or 4 (my Grandpa dressed up as Santa; going to the Elks Club with my parents for the holidays; the UGLY orange globe light on a chain in our living room).
My wife swears she remembers watching opera on tv around 2, and the apollo moon landing (she would not have been 2 at that point).
A friend of mine swears he remembers birth (this sort of thing does happen from time to time but I'm a little skeptical)

My first memory is a very simple one, but there are a
couple of interesting aspects to it. My mom put me in
the back "seat" (more like a bench) of an old VW
beetle. Beside me were several bags of groceries, and
on the other side of the bags was another kid, about
the same age as me. The other kid and I kept leaning
back and making faces at each other behind the bags.
Several years ago, when my mom asked me what my
first memory was, I told her this, and she said, "That's
impossible!" When I asked why, she said that she and
the woman who owned the VW got into an argument
when I was 18 months old and never spoke to each
other again. So I couldn't have been any older than
that.
The other interesting thing about this memory, besides
it being so early, is that I remember it in black and
white. Does anybody have any idea why that should
be? Do babies not have the ability to see in color until
they are older? Is it because all TV shows were in B&W
at the time and that's why I remember it that way?
I've heard that some people dream in B&W but I don't.
My next clear memory, in color, was a few days before
my 3rd birthday. My great-grandmother had sent me a
dress to wear for my birthday party. I remember trying
it on and loving it. I also remember my 3rd birthday
very clearly, and pretty much everything else of import
since then.
My 6 year old son has clear memories from well before
he turned 3. And both of us have horrible short-term
memories.
My 4 year old daughter, who is a freaking prodigy who
can read just about anything set in front of her and
count to 200, says she can remember being inside the
womb. Not sure I believe that, but it wouldn't surprise
me considering the brain on that girl. Plus, there was a
somewhat traumatic event while she was in there, of
people cutting into me and poking around for four
hours trying to find my ruptured appendix when i was 6
months pregnant with her. She saved my life that day,
but that's a story for another post because this one is
too long already and not nearly as entertaining as
anything The Chairman writes.

monsterone - Not necessarily. One of our earliest memories (often not recalled in fact, but evidenced by later behavior) is being nursed by one's mother. That feeling of warmth, security and being loved is something some people look for their whole life.

My first real memory doesn't last any more than a few moments. I was 2 and for some reason was visiting day care or preschool of a neighborhood friend. The place had really high ceilings, like a gymnasium, and I was kind of in awe and looking all around the room. Then I realized that I was being called to join a group of kids in a circle, so I ran over. That's it.

I had to have been like 2 years old because I was living in my first house which I only lived in until i was 2 years old. My mom was in the shower and she had left a chicken on the counter to thaw out for dinner. I got on a stepstool, tried to pull the chicken down and it fell onto my big toe shattering the toe nail. I cried like a baby until my mom got out of the shower and I guess bought me to the hospital or bandaged my foot or something. The next memory I have is my dad bringing me home a yoyo or twizzlers(I dont remember which), somehow making me feel better about my broken toe nail.
