I'm looking for stuff off the beaten track in Ireland, and I know a few folks have raised a glass in the emerald isle, and I"m just trying to prioritize my activities. Any suggestions?

Drive and hike. Keep moving. The whole country is worth seeing.

I've been there about 7 times over the years-probaably because I have alot of family there and never have to pay for hotels. Definately bring a light raincoat and bring it with you wherever you go. It rains nearly every day around 2pm for about a half an hour. Dublin has a great night life but crime has also risen there because of the drug problem. Stay out of Derry unless you know people there. Hop the ferry that crosses the Irish Sea (a great trip in itself) and visit London for a weekend. Check out Kerry and any part of Western Ireland(my personal favorite) Limerack has some great pubs off the beaten track. Remember, the Irish love Americans and just have a great time!!

GAHWAY!

Definately the best city I went to in Ireland. A young crowd and the main street is closed off from cars and there are just bars and resturants left and right, definately go there!

Check out the Cliffs of Morr, their cool as hell. Waterford, Limerick, Shannon, and Clifden has a great road called the "sky" something or other, i forget but that was the best view I saw in Ireland. Basically takes you right along a cliff.

Enjoy it, best time I ever had in my life and the people were cool as shite.

Belfast is my favorite by far, check out the Crown pub, its opposite the Europa Hotel which holds the title as the most bombed building in the North.

I've not been there, but apparently the following directions will get you to an area with some good rock climbing and reasonable bouldering:

Approach: Climbers usually base themselves at Ailladie and this can be approached from the south via Lisdoonvarna or on the northern side from Ballyvaughan. This latter is the normal route from Dublin. Take the Dublin - Galway road to Craughwell, turn left to Ardrahan and continue to Kinvara and Ballyvaughan. Follow the coast to Black Head. About 12km south of Black Head the road rises as it leaves the townland of Fanore and swings around the next headland where the Cliffs of Moher come into view in the distance. At this point there are some lay-bys bounded by 5m high cliffs on the left and cars may be parked here. The edge of the sea-cliff is just 100m from the road at this point. There is a hostel and a large camp/caravan site in Fanore, plus a shop, pub and public telephone. Ballyvaughan to the north is a pleasant little village with good pubs, a hotel and an excellent grocery. Lisdoonvarna is a faded Fifties kind of place with lots of accommodation including a hostel. The fabled village of Doolin now has three hostels.

appologies if this is a double post

as an irish person, i recommend

galway is the best city, try and hit one of the summer festivals (galway races, oyster festival, heritage festival)

for driving donegal, clare ,west cork and kerry are really beautiful

dublin is a bit characterless

do get in contact with any relatives you have (even 2nd cousins), they will take you in and make you feel part of the community

to get you into the travel mode, these are the 2 best travel books on ireland

around ireland with a fridge 9.5/10

mc carthys bar 8/10

- ireland is quite expensive, it rains alot
- you will meet some of the nicest people, and pub time there is great

enjoy

Also when you go over there if you catch a leprechaun he has to give you three wishes. A lot of them try to get away with just the one wish but thats not the rule, and you can tell him that if he tries to give you a hard time.
