View Full Version : Am I selfish?
Heres the deal HK, I live (back) with my parents and two older stepbrothers. The youngest of the two is currently part time in school completing a few needed courses. Note that he allready graduated Blah blah blah.
ANYWHO ever Monday or so I go out and spend MY hard earned money to buy coldcuts and stuff so I can eat lunch instead of spending a fourtune eating out everyday. Now as much as it sounds messed up I need to kind of hide my stuff to prevent anyone from eating it. Afterall I bought it for myself so I can eat during the week.
I got to thinking that the whole deal with hidding my stuff was kinda lame and childish. So I told Both of my brothers that Id greatly appreciate it if they would not touch my stuff. They both agreed but only one followed. Now also keep in mind my wonderfull (I hardly ever cook a meal for "the children" and all I really eat with my husband is rabbit food) stepmother doesnt really go grocery shopping anymore so we fend for ourselves. Long story short this whole week I've been noticing that someone has been eating my food. Of course its my stepbrother who really doesnt have a job yet but oveously will soon. Now its never been a what comes around goes around kinda deal. So I get really pissed off when I have no food for the next day and once again I have to go out and buy some more. Do I have a right to fell this way?

No, kick the kid's ass, and move out. Or else, get a mini-fridge for your room with a lock, and put everything in there.

of course your not selfish. No one likes to be ignored. You asked them to respect your posessions and they didnt. Its stealing.
Id buy some turkey breast..lace it heavily with something that will make the little bastard violently ill, and loudly tell them NOT TO EAT YOUR STUFF.
then wait for the fun.

"...it's my orange juice mom, it has my name on it..."
your situation sounds like a college room mate situation. the solution: put your hand out and demand money from the offending source, or beat some ass. or grip about it, which most people do.

Of course it's not selfish on your part - it's selfish on the part of your brother who doesn't respect your things.
Satelite Can had an excellent suggestion, in fact he beat me too it. Get a small fridge for your room keep your stuff inside and lock the door to the fridge with a padlock and/or chain.

not to be dick hk, but i feel like pad lock on a personal fridge would create move divisions within the family.
by putting up barriers like that, it addresses the symptom, and not the problem. forgive my psycho-babble but i think a good ass kicking is in line. not necessarily the actual act but the threat of the act.
the step brother does not respect the person involved, and my solution would be to establish the alpha-male role. he has asked already for the respect of his wishes, but they've been ignored. the next step is to take the step brother down a peg and not hide away food with a pad lock in personal space.
anyone who disrespects like that deserves face time, and finally mr knuckles when that doesn't work.

monsterone - Yes it addresses the symptom.
That's because, unless you get the family into therapy, (very unlikely here) the underlying situation, one of lack of respect will not change.
Addressing the symptom is the way to go here, b/c before long the offending party will have a job and be out of the house. In the interum, AG's personal property is protected.
