man all these f'n contests around, i never win anything, nor do i know of anyone who has ever won. if i can't decide between a candy bar i'll always pick one with the best prize, even though i never fucking win.

cereal contests, candy bar contests, pepsi contests, you would think with all of these contests i would know one single person who has won, but i never have.

has anyone ever one any of these things?

i got 5 out of 6 on the Pick-6...

i was reading off the numbers right to left and had "5 In A Row", i looked up on the board at the last number and looked down and all I could say was FUCK...

and get this...

I had two sets of numbers on the ticket(numbers which I picked) and the number in the first position that I didn't have was the first number in my second set of numbers... it was sitting there a 16th of an inch or less away...

then I only got 673.00 bucks cause there were alot of winners, THEN you have to pay 26 or 28% tax on that... I FELT LIKE I LOST!

I didn't even want to tell anyone and I almost cried thinking about how much easier my life would have been...

Sorry friend. Taking the wife to dinner tonight. Courtesy of the New York State Lottery Commission.

I also splurged today on a haircut and "The Beatles Anthology" on DVD!

However, when I win the 80 million in MegaBucks tonight, I'm buying you all a breakfast burrito!

I wasn't on Double Dare, but when they first went to syndication they had a call in contest to win Double Dare Merchandise. I must have been the only one calling in because over the 2 weeks I won 2 hand held games and 3 "best of" videos.

Back when my son was in kindergarten (he's in the 8th grade now) I won a trip for our entire family (5 people) to go to Disney in Florida, all expenses paid, 7 days/6 nights fro Berkeley Software (the folks who make the "Flying Toasters" screen saver).

They had an essay contest to write about the worst thing your kids had done with your family computer, because they were hawking a kid-safe desktop program that would lock down your PC so the kids could only get at kids programs.

My essay included how my then-5 year old and then-4 year old were caught making pie charts...in Quicken, with my bank balance; and my then 5th-grader and her fellow Girl Scouts found a directory on my PC named "shit."

When they called to tell me that I won the grand prize, at first I thought they were salespeople trying to tell me something. She had to say NO, you ENTERED OUR CONTEST!" so I wouldn't hang up on her.

Then the first-class plane tickets arrived.

We stayed at the resort at Disney World, a family suite with three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a full-sized kitchen, a living room and televisions EVERYWHERE that piped in the Disney Channel. Disney Videos were everywhere to pop in the VCR.

We didn't watch any of them. We had a free vacation. We opened & closed the parks every day, staying the entire day.

All we had to pay for was our own food and souvenirs.

When we came home we had five Flying Toaster T-shirts and a suite of Berkeley Software titles waiting for us--tons of games, lots of stuff. Back then the whole she-bang must've had a retail value of 8 grand.

i always heard the GIFT tax was enormous on these things..
Ginny if the trip had a retail of $ 8,000 did you have to pay around $ 4000 in taxes that year?

Tall James who won $ 500 dollars - how many dollars do you think you spent on lottery tickets over the last 10 yrs?

TastelessGinny
06-06-2003, 05:54 PM
I'm no tax expert, but this is how I understand it, having won a significant prize once in my life. For big prizes like that, you usually get a 1099-MISC form for the fair market value of the prize. If you don't get that form you still need to report the fair market value of the prize because the company that awarded you that prize is reporting it somewhere, so honesty pays off.

We always do the long form with our taxes, so an extra 1099 form ain't a big deal. A 1099 form is different than the form you'd get if you won outright cash, as in a lottery. For a lottery, you'd need a form W-2G, and you get beaned a lot more for taxes, since it's out & out cash and not "fair market value."

We did get forms but I forgot which one it was, I think it was the 1099.

I did eventually win a Surge bucket hat though.

I won 100 Jazz albums from a radio contest back when
I was about 13 and couldn't appreciate them. I ended
up giving all of them away. The only other two things I
ever won, I won from Don & Mike, which I am sure will
win me some friends around here. : P

Both of these contests were years ago, when they
were on in the mornings in DC. I won movie tickets to
"True Believer" because I was the first person to call in
and name the first five MTV VeeJays. Not a difficult feat
back in 1988!

The other one was winning the Miss Don & Mike
contest. There is a very long and detailed story about
it that I put up on the web for people on a D&M
message board to read. Here it is:

Ginny you get a 1099 Misc . I know because I won a trip just last November and got the form in January. They apply what the trip would cost you if you paid top dollar.

In February i won $500 cash in a drawing and I just won a $100 gift certificate to PC Richards from a radio station contest.

you have two choices: Castration or a one way ticket to New York

i filled out an online card for a contest sponsored by bud lite and major league lacrosee. i figured i like beer and i like lacrosee, why not. forgot about it. 1 month later i get something in the mail that has to be notarized to guarantee my prize. wierded out but did it and send it out.
next i get the letter detailing my prize:
-3 days in a hotel (housing the tourmament players)
-$500 dollars
-a prize pack with 2 authentic jerseys (home/away) valued at $150 a piece for the team i was representing(long island- casey powell)
-tickets to the semi-finals and championship games
-THE BEST- all access passes for the vip tent and all the bud you can drink

nothing will make to feel like a bigger than having a vip lanyard around your neck. you wish afterwords that life had an equivelent.

When I was a kid I won a "treasure chest filled with 50 games" from Capt Crunch. The picture on the back of the cereal box made it look like a real treasure chest filled with toys. It arrived in a 8 1/2 x 11 envelope. It was a cardboard game board with punch out pieces and elaborate in instructions detailing the 50 different games you could play with these 2 items. oh and the flip side of the cardboard had fake woodgrain that when you folded it it made a treasure chest shape. what a rip-off

Did you ever see those boxes in diners, banks, etc. with the enter to win a Caribbean vacation? Well, I won a contest just like that when I was about 16.

However, the contest was for 21 and older so I filled out the entry form that I was 33 and making six figures a year.

When they called me I couldn't believe it - then realized I had to get my Dad to cover for me but no one was home. So in the end, I lost.

Enough with the sigpics.
