i've had my period for almost 2 weeks now. i was a couple of days behind in my birth control pills, so i think that may be the cause, but this is driving me crazy! it's a wonder i havent bled to death by now.

Jenn, that's happened to me before too. It probably has to do with the pills or if I'm under alot of stress or gain/lose weight it can effect my cycle. If it doesn't stop soon you should probably at least call your gyno to see if you need to go in for a visit. Bloody tookies suck :(

I hate my gyno because he keeps putting me on all these low dose pills and I keep trying to explain to him THEY DON'T WORK. Sometimes I'll have spotting for three weeks straight. I HATE it. At least with good old high dose orthocyclen (not the tri-cyclen that everyone's on) I didn't gain wait, had no moodiness, and DIDN'T BLEED 24/7!!

The other problem with the low dose pills is that if I forget to take one one day I'll start bleeding. Until I finish the pack. Then another week. So retarded. I've gotten to the point where if I forget to take one pill, I just stop taking them, let it go for a week (then it usually stops) and then start on a new pack. I've got half full packs galore. Awful. I want my orthocyclen back!!!! Right now I take some brand called "Ovcon". Who the hell's ever heard of OVCON? Next time I'm going to ask my gyno for something higher dose.

JEN - It's normal to bleed 4-5 days on average during your menstural cycle and 1-8 days is also within the normal range.

You must see your gynocologist immediately, as there are several quite serious conditions that could cause continuous protracted bleeding.

Clotting is entirely normal, and occurs b/c clots form in the utterus where they are broken down by an enzyme. Since the utterus can only hold so much, when it is full, the blood must exit, even if the enzyme hasn't had enough time to dissolve all the clots.

Missing or changing your birth control pills, can have a very serious effect, and change your cycle, it's length, it's intensity and perhaps most importantly, your ability to get pregnant. You must use alternate forms of birth control (such as a condom) for at least a month after you get back onto your regular pill schedule, one a day, every day, including the placebos.

1. You don't have to take the placebos. As a matter of fact, my boyfriend takes my placebos for me. The only reason they're there is for people who need to take something every day lest they forget and get "out of the habit". And even then, it is perfectly safe to skip your placebos entirely and go straight on to the next pack of active pills.

2. Depending on the type of pill (see CK's post for which types matter how much), you do NOT have to use back-up birth control for a month. It can be for as little as a week, or not at all in certain cases where you've only missed one pill. It may also be as much as a month. That is per the pill manufacturer's directions (I've been on like all of them at some point in the past 8 or so years), and I'm assuming that they know what they're talking about.

I would say just call your gyno and ask them if they think you should come in, and follow the directions that came with your pills. But you don't need me to tell you that, I'm sure you figured it out already.

Actually if you want to stop your period you'll just take the active pills and never get it. There have never been any studies that show that this is in any way harmful. To be on the safe side, doctors usually suggest getting your period once every three months, but most agree that you can go on for much longer.

Apparently there is even literature (I have not read it first hand and I wouldn't even know where to looks for it nor do I have the time), that suggests that skipping your placebos can decrease the risk of pregnancy - I gather (I really wish had some direct and credible evidence/links for this but anyhoo) because:
1. It makes women less likely to skip a pill or two because they have symptoms like breast tenderness that they think is caused by the pill (apparently it's not, and when you don't get your period you don't get the tenderness). Skipping a pill or two in and of itself is not necessarily bad, it's just bad if it happens to be say the first pill or two of your new cycle. (in other words, you just had your period, you've been off the pill for seven days, and now you skip one or two pills. Women are at the highest risk for pregnancy if they've missed the pill for more than seven days. Less than that is apparently relatively (but obviously not perfectly or even desireably) safe)

2. Women who do this are at a lower risk of developing "breakthrough" ovulation, that is, ovulating despite taking the pill properly (particularly during the seven days off).

HK, what "personal experience" you had is not terribly relevant. Hell, I'm speaking from "personal experience" too, so where does that leave us?

I'll repeat my earlier suggestion. Read (and follow) the instructions that came with your pills and talk to your gynecologist.

Let me repost what I wrote (and what CK wrote for that matter) since you (HK) may have missed them the first time around:

Additionally, since you say you are behind on your pill, you must remember to use alternate protection, such as condoms to avoid the risk of pregnancy. If it is a progestin-only pill, you must use alternate protection for the rest of the month. If it was only one combination pill, do not worry, but if it was two, you must use alternate protection for at least the next week.

Depending on the type of pill, you do NOT have to use back-up birth control for a month. It can be for as little as a week, or not at all in certain cases where you've only missed one pill. It may also be as much as a month.

Perhaps your personal experience (HK) is with a one of those (progestin only) brands that requires you to use backup for a month. However, since I don't have the instructions from the various brands of pills I have taken in the past, I'll quote a few from the physician's desk reference that summarizes the directions/precautions, etc.:

Ortho tri-cyclen (low dose tri phasic, this is what most women are on, probably cause it was the first to be approved to claim benefits for your skin. Norgestimate/ethinyl estradiol) (also refers to Ortho-cyclen, which was my favorite so far and I think I will go back on after my next gyno visit in a couple of months - that is non-phasic norgestimate/ethinyl estradiol): "The patient should be instructed to use a back-up method of birth control if she has sex in the seven (7) days after missing pills <that refers to any number of missed pills. three or more you just start over again.>"

Ovcon (what I'm on. low constant dose. Norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol): "The patient is warned that she may become pregnant if she has unprotected intercourse in the seven days after missing the pills <that's up to two. again, three or more is the same 7 day deal but you throw out the pack and start over>"

Ovrette (norgestreal only - that is a synthetic progestrogen - these are the ones that apparently take the longest to "kick in") "Furthermore you should use another method of birth control in addition to taking Ovrette until you have taken fourteen days (2 weeks) of medication"

I dunno. I think the PDR fully supports my assertion that depending on the pill, you do not need to use backup for a full month (actually I'm getting sick of flipping around, but I couldn't even find a single one that referred to having to use backup for a full month, although I'm sure they must exist somewhere. Over the weekend I checked with 2 gynocologists and a fertility specialist and they all agreed that if you miss more than 4 days of the pill, you should use supplemental birth control (a condom) for a full month afterwards to avoid the chance of getting pregnant.

Estimates on the odds of conception, (as compared to not using a condom while waiting for the birth conrol pills to regain full funcionality, and assuming ovulation at the time of sex) ranged from 25-50%. The fertility specialist had the lower estimate.

Then again, all odds go out the window in certain situations. For example, there is no one so fertile as a 17 year old catholic honor student having her first sexual experieince in the back seat of a car after the prom.

Over the weekend I checked with 2 gynocologists and a fertility specialist and they all agreed that if you miss more than 4 days of the pill, you should use supplemental birth control (a condom) for a full month afterwards to avoid the chance of getting pregnant.


Okay, so what about the four gynecologists I've had in my life that didn't say that?

HK: This isn't an argument. I just hoped that you'd agree it was wiser for someone to read the instructions that came with their pills and consult their own gynecologist than it was to listen to someone who's not even a gynecologist on a messageboard authoritively relate second hand information that is contrary to the manufacturer's directions.

TOO CUTE - Why would this be an arguement? We've obviously had different experiences. I don't think we're at odds with the message we're trying to convey either.

Many of the women I talk to, just do not see their gynocologists nearly enough. They do not ask questions of this type. They often do not read the manufacturers instuctions (most people don't for many medications).

Given that there is at least a possibility of getting pregnant following a screw up with birth control pills, and my personal experience negates the argument that it can't happen, b/c it did, safety is paramount and caution is to be observed. Better safe than sorry. Wearing a condom for a month won't kill you. However, having a baby at 18 may ruin your life.

So what was so wrong with me saying that people should go to their own gynecologists and then posting the manufacturers' instructions that come with some common brands of pills that you had to disagree with the manufacturers instructions and say that your second hand information was more correct?
