Think about it for a minute. Technology is supposed to help us, but is it? With all the advances made, technology appears to be making things too easy for us, negating the use of our brains to think abstractly and other stuff (see it's happening already!). Like Wisdom teeth, which used to serve a purpose at one time, could the brain be headed the same way? Some fodder to think about:
Calculators- who needs to figure out mathematical computations via hand. Just enter it into the calculator and viola and answer. Now there are scientific calculators that figure out solutions and can graph too!
Digital watches- how many kids can tell time by looking at a clock with a second hand?
T.V.- the modern day babysitter for young and old.
Cell phone- why talk in person, when I can talk to you wherever I am. (Hey, what's up!...I'm on the subway now going home.)Computer and the internet- remember when you needed to use the card catalogue in the library when you needed to look up a book? How about using a dictionnary...(hold on, let me spell check). Cartoons now...mostly computer generated. Why socialize, communicate and learn people skills? I'll jusy e-mail you or chat with you on the internet.
the Segway- what, we got to walk?
Mapquest or Navistar- what happened to the fun of getting lost? Especially with Navistar, who needs to ask someone ne more to get directions?

I'm sure there are others but I can't think right now (too much thinking already).

Ah yes, I remember in highschool which was only 9 years ago for me.

I will admit I was a little behind, but I still did all my reports on a typewriter. I actually went to the library to research reports.

Mobile phones were the size of military walkie talkies.

And I had to see naked women, late night on Showtime or Cinemax or finding a playboy laying somewhere.

But, tv has been raising kids for years. The only thing that has changed is vhs and dvd.

Damn you beat me to it DCReed...It is not necessarily the technology. For it was technology that has allowed man to aloft on mechanical wings, and to step foot on the moon. So those are arguments against why people are 'more stupider'. I blame to a degree the corporations for allowing for the smothering of new ideas and artistic expression. I also blame government for allowing things to degenerate and deregulating buisness'. And at the risk of being hypocritical, but it is also the internet that has allowed for the world to become 'more stupider'. It coincides with the previous two to create a homogenized world where there is nothing but the "Top Ten" books, movies, etc. Man needs to diversify and express themselves and not allow themselves to be suppressed by the regimes which allow for the promotion of what they want to promote.

ever see a 40+ year old try a computer? a calculator? a TV? VCR? DVD? they cant do a god dam thing. In a sence we are not getting dumber but we are learning how to do things a different way. i can still program a DVD/VCR/TV/Cabel/Satelite/Stero system faster bymyself then if my whole family did it together, but i suck at math. If i had to do my math by hand i'd be fuked, but i got that TI-93 and i can do 3-d Graphs and shit. new teck is a tool and anyone who can use it is just as smart as the person doing it y hand. learning how to use the tool is where the knowledge is. so were not dumber for not doing it the old way, we are smart in a different way.

I love our technology. I make mistakes doing math by hand, therefore, the calculator is a blesing.

Comps help us get info faster. I see that as a positive. We have more information at our fingertips than ever before. Just because it's easily found doesn't make it any less valuable.

I will agree with you on the point of young children no being able to read normal clock with hands now that the digital clock has spread through out society. Then again, I see less and less clocks with hands, so they'll probably make it.

The only one that actually made me a little mad to read was your assumption that people enjoy getting lost. WHAT? I like my car, but when I'm driving it's always point A to point B as quickly as possible. Plus, knowing where you're going saves gas. And that's great in my poor ass world.
