View Full Version : News Flash: Sammy Sosa Corks His Bat!

I'm listening to the Yankee game and they just mentioned that Sammy Sosa broke his bat at Wrigley Field tonight. The bat was corked, and he was ejected from the game.
Rumor has it that Bucky Dent hit that famous home run against Boston with a corked bat.

Damn, you beat me to it.
This is really big news. If they bring this back up this could really ruin his reputation and career. Did he have it on during the homerun race?
It always is fishy when someone goes from hitting 30 homers a year to 60.

seriously, it kind of makes you sick but "why the fuck" should we even give these fucking guys a minute of our attention... they couldn't give a rats ass about us...
Arnold Schwartz admitted using steroids when he won all the competitions... he should be stripped of every fucking posession he owns...
it just gets my goat when the playing field is not level or fair...

If that's true it still doesn't stop the hurt.
Mickey Rivers gave him the corked bat after he fouled a pitch off his foot. While the trainer was working on the foot, Rivers claims to have noticed that he was using a cracked bat. So he gave him one of his own.

I knew it. I knew he did something to boost his homers and finally the proof is there.
Now i better not hear crap from people about how he "might not have corked it during his 60+ homer years." This is it, the proof is there.
Obviously he probably didnt cork his bat for all his homers since 1998 because the guy has power, but in my mind he should have about 15-20 homers taken away from each of the past 5 seasons.

if you're getting multi-millions, wouldn't you do anything to make sure that keeps coming in? but there should be ramifications if you are caught.

Plus, not to sound TOO Corny, but what does that do to the little kids that looked up to a guy who came to this country and made it big? It says "I'm dishonest" or worse yet, "Do whatever you have to in order to get ahead." It's kida saying "I couldn't beat people like McGuire an Bonds without an illegal edge."
And what the hell is up with players today?! McGuire was on that supplement shit. Sosa corks. Are there any Plain Jane ball players anymore? Everyone's got a shoe and a drink and a video game.

This was pretty f'd up...but I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt for the moment. But if they find even one more corked bat that he owned (I believe they took all of his bats), I'm not gonna believe him and no one will.
It would be seriously messed up if he used these regularly, but did anyone else see sports center? They did the math and a corked bat does not make that big of a difference. They said if he hit a home run that would normally be 400 with a corked bat it would only be 404 feet. Why even bother? It COULD have been a mistake.

This is actually really sticky for MLB. They credit Sosa (Along with McGuire) for revitalizing pro Baseball after the 94 strike. To find more corked bats on him puts too much into question.
Now My conspiracy theory mind says that if they <I>do</I> find more corked bats, we'll never find out about them.
Of course if there is a cover up and it's ever discovered, it would be even more damaging to baseball that Sosa's corked bats, but MLB is in pretty desperat shape right now, c/o Bud Selig, "small market champion"
BTW, ever since the Creatine debate in '98, when Sosa opened his locker for reporters and showed his Flinstone Vitamins, I knew he was full of it...

the news may not be that big:
He claims that he uses corked bats in practice and exhibitions, and grabbed the wrong one (possible)
He hasn't hit a homer since May 1st. If he was using a corker, he would've hit a few out.
He's broken bats before, and none of them have been corked.
I see 2 logical possibilites:
He's telling the truth.
or he recently started corking to compensate for his recent injuries (he just got off the DL after losing the toenail on his big toe)

I hate to put myself in the cliche female role...but...
What exactly takes place with a corked bat???
I've been searching everywhere for information.
I only found out that it is legal in college leagues but not in the majors and it somehow improves the batter's performance...but I've yet to get the specifics.
A little help??

Here's a question...
The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown has one of Sosa's bats on display from his home run race with McGuire in 1998. Will they or should they X-ray that bat?
I say X-ray it out of the public eye and then decide what to do with the findings.
<img src=http://users.rcn.com/jamespatton/PLATE.jpg>
Thanks for asking that BronxBabe! I'm a dude, so I wouldve gotten killed for asking that, but since you did, I can just sit back, sip my coffee, and wait for the answer of what the hell a corked bat is with noone knowing!
My guess is that they put a cork in it... which makes no sense whatsoever... Because when I think of a cork, I think of the wooden thingy in wine bottles, and I cant figure out how that would relate to a bat. Unless they drill a hole into it and put like lead or cement or something to make it heavier, and "cork" it in. Ooh! That might be it! I guess that one!
Aggie

I believe they put cork in a bat in order to hit the ball farther. That's why he claims he uses it in practice 'To please his fans' because they want to see him hit home runs.
But like I said before, it doesn't make THAT big of a difference.

yes they drill out the center of the bat from the end, fill the void with cork , like the stuff from a wine bottle, and then patch the end to hide it - it supposedly lets you hit the ball farther but I'm not clear on the physics behind it - would Mike the Teacher like to comment?

The deal is that cork is lighter than wood. The lighter corked bat can be swung faster than a heavier bat. And it's all about bat speed.

i thought it provided a "bounce/rubber" type affect on the ball... instead of the ball being thrust by solid wood there was an additional "spring" like affect from the contracting and expanding cork...
not saying the "lighter bat" is not the answer i would just think why couldn't they go with a bat made from "lighter wood"...
but then lighter wood may actually take away "distance"
so they have to use the harder/heavier wood on the outside but make the bat lighter from the inside...
don't mind me, i'm just thinking aloud...

I'm with Aggie.
Another thing I question, if he'd been using corked bats all along, wouldn't they have broken too?
I can see you using one during practice because the pitches come in at maybe 65mph tops. At 90+ mph regular game pitching speeds, it just doesn't seem feasible that he'd have been using a corked bat for all this time and this would be the first one that broke.
I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, and I'm glad to see that the media is as well. Not only is he Dominican, he's the epitome of the American dream.
As for what's my story with him- it's not a big deal. I was in the Dominican Republic and I attended an event at which we were seated at the same table. He hit on me every time his wife stood up from the table. No big deal, just funny particularly because somehow I've crossed path with lots of major league players (I think being Dominican ups my chances) and Alkey says that I've been hit on by at least one member of every major league and American league team.

On ESPN radio, Rob Dibble is essentially calling Sosa a big fat liar... According to him, Major Leauge players hold thier game bats sacred, and use the best grain, etc, possible, while they essentially toss thier BP bats, because they use crap for them.
His opinion is that no self respecting player would ever mix up thier DP bat and thier game bat.
I've never spent any time around major leauge baseball players, I don't know personally. I am inclined to listen to someone who's been there, and has no stake in what happens (i.e. not a teammate, a la Jason Grimsley and Albert Belle)
Another question brought up is, what is Sosa's defenition of "exhebition?" Does it include the Home run derby? There are prizes and money at stake there, there are other "exhibitions" that MLB players partake in. Does he use corked bats there?
Eh. I never liked him... always thought he was full of it.... like his bat...

No, I don't really think it will.
The general consensus that I'm seeing from fans (and from quite a few analysts) goes along with what DarkHippie posted. Sosa has been in a slump since getting faced with a ball in April, and thus the reasoning is that, if anything, he only recently started to use the corked bat to get back a little of his heat.
Sosa is too well-liked by pretty much everyone, I think, for this to really affect him permanently. This isn't like the Albert Belle situation a few years back.
<img border="0" src="http://se7enrfnet.homestead.com/files/captainamerica.jpg" width="300" height="100">
They checked all of his other bats, 76 of them, and they all were clean. So, if we believe MLB, it seems that Sosa's explanation probably is true.
