what's the deal with the elves? how come liv tyler can't just live with aragon until he dies and then go join her spirit world.
do they have to leave by a certain time? and if so does that mean elrond and cate blanchett will never be able to leave, because they were there too long? i don't get it.

She is not a pure elf (neither is Elrond), and has to make the choice of the Half-elven. (You would've had to have read the novels to know this)

I'm sure too cute will elucidate further, but she has the option to go on with the elves and live out a long elven lifetime, or give up her elven side and live a human life.

Yea. Humans got the afterlife SHAFT in the Trilogy man! Elves get the good shit. I'd be at the Grey Havens with my Vulcan ears glued on, acting all weird and shit just hoping I could sneak through.
I'd be an fantasy world wet back. Tee hee hee. So non-PC!

Technically, since Elrond chose an elven life, he IS a pure elf, just as his brother Elros chose to be a human and became a pure human. Elros btw is a great-ancesctor of Aragorn, so Aragorn and Arwen are technically related.
But yeah basically deal is, if you have elf and human blood in you, you get to choose.
What I don't get is, if Elrond became an elf when he chose an elven life (which tolkien was pretty explicit about saying confers upon the person all the things that go along with being an elf), why were his children with Celebrian (elven daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn) all considered half-elves. HMMM??

I saw this before and it's something but not much:
Tolkien gives a good explanation for this in his published Letters, specifically, Letter No. 153.
Elros chose to be a King and 'longaevus' but mortal, so all his descendants are mortal, and of a specially noble race, but with dwindling longevity: so Aragorn...
Elrond chose to be among the Elves. His children -- with a renewed Elvish strain, since their mother Celebrˇan daughter of Galadriel -- have to make their choices.
I guess what it's saying is that because of the insertion of pure Elven (High Elven at that) blood from Celebrian's line allows them for some reason to have the Choice. It doesn't make sense, but as you know Tolkien changed rules to make his stories to his liking (Glorfindel, anyone?) and trying to force consistancy on it doesn't always work.

That was my point exactly. Elrond's an elf. Celebrian's an elf. So why are his kids considered as half-elves??!

DAMN, can we just enjoy the movie for what it is.....
A MOVIE. Who watches movies to think? I know not me.
BUT if you want a question....why are most of the characters in the movie white? But the bad guys are not? (Hmmm......)

uhmmm, I was talking about the books, not the movies.
And to answer your question, the good guys are white and the bad guys (except saruman really) black in the movie because that's the way the books were written. To answer why the books were like that well, you'll have to read them.

Tolkien created middle earth to be England's mythology, being that England is so far above the equator, there wouldn't have been many "darker" people on the island that long ago.
Though I guess you'd love all the race-baiting papers written that call Tolkien and his books racist. It's kind of like the bible beaters who are asccusing the Matrix of undermining religion...

Nah. I was just curious if maybe some kind of mighty funk mothership would be landing in Elf-land in one of the later films to turn those stiff muthas out, but I guess not.
I thought the thing was supposed to be ancient New Zealand/Australia, but, whatever. Someone at work showed some "Tolkien Map" that made it look like a giant continent, and not just something as puny-sized as Britain. It seemed to indicate different climates and environmental conditions, which is how we ended up with Asians, "Middle Easterners", blacks, whites, "reds", etc., etc...
