I mean, I know that if I go in to my Windows folders and start deleting files I'll fuck myself, but I'm talking about all these goddamn freaky little menus you can access. Right clicking on shit lets you access stuff that I have no business looking at. And when you run "msconfig" you get some nice shit. And can't you push F8 at the start-up screen and get more menus?
What could really happen if I go in there and start shutting shit off? Will I be fucked?
I guess I already know the answer to this question, I just want to hear some Geek Speak.
Also, any cool trick you geeks know to make my machine run better or get better porn or some shit?

MSCONFIG can be used to make your computer run faster, use less memory, and start up faster.
Type msconfig into the "run" box in the start menu. Hit the "startup" button. Uncheck the boxes of programs you don't need to run at startup (you can always start the programs later). Restart the computer. Depending on how much stuff you uncheck, and how much resources are freed up you should notice an improvement.
Download and install spybot search and destroy. Get rid of all the spyware on your computer and it will run faster.
Download and install "Diskeeper" (The free version is fine, but the pay version (also available on Kaaza Lite) is better. It is a disk defrgamentor utility and works fantastically. The pay version can be set to run in the background and it defragments the drive whenever it's needed.
Go to PC Pitstop and run the testing utility. Any problems with your system will be red flagged and you'll be told how to fix it.
As for porn, Kaaza Lite has tons. Join alt.binaries newsgroups for your particular tastes. Never pay for internet porn. There is just way to much available for free.

Jeez, HK,
I don't do any of that stuff and sometimes my computer just fucks up on it's own just to bother me. Seriously, I'm afraid to try any of that stuff you were talking about. I wouldn't know how to get out of it!!

Thanks HordeKing. Your advice reminded me that I have some Kodak Picture Transfer software that starts up all the time and I don't want it on. I'll shut it off when I am ready to shut this thing down.
And I already have Spybot. Run it every few days. It's great. I only use Kaaza Lite.
Anybody have any ideas what I can do on that start-up screen?
I'm always interested in learning about comps. Also, this is my new computer and I want to take care of it because I'm gonna have it for a LONG time.

Since I have dial up I down loaded Catalyst's dial up configuration tool and played with the MTU ,RWIN and TTL settings.
(I have XP) I dropped alot of the "really cool" visuals in the Performance options. Some were important to me, others not ( like shadows under menus, common tasks in folders etc.)
The good think about XP is the bail out option if you really ef-up. (restore)
I only have had a computer a couple of months so I don't know much "geek speak".
Is there a "faster browser" than than AOL one? Sometimes I use netscape but it doesn't seem "faster".

Well GCG, I never use AOL's windows. I just start it and use Internet Explorer windows. I like them better.

Hey Reeshy. GrimSanity hooked me up with his computer store. I got just the tower with a nice package for a decent price. It's not a name like Dell or Gateway, it's assembled from parts they put together. So I don't get shit like 24 hour service, but I DID save an assload of cash. I'm lucky enough to have Grim and another friend in PA to call when I have computer problems. If the service is important to you, go with a company.
If you want more info, RF mail or E-mail me and I'l give you the place's number. It's right in Clifton, NJ. Don't know where you live, but it's only like a half hour from the tunnels and bridge.

Thanks Moe. I'll get in touch with you but the only problem I have is that I don't think that my passport is current for Jersey anymore. I live on Long Island now!!

Moe, thanks for the great question and HK, THANK YOU SO MUCH for the wonderful advice. I havent started up any of my animation programs yet but I sure hope stoping all the running stuff off my PC will have me rebooting less and less. I just lost the little volume dealie and need to figure out what its name was. Thanks again.

Windows 95, eh? Does that mean you're still running FAT 16?
Move on up to 2000 or XP (or even 98 SE or ME and reap the benefits of increased file space)

I'm not sure what this means, but I will concur that as the Webmaster for a State University I also use Opera as well as others to run compatibility checks (We must be essential page element viewable down to Netscape 3.0, non-essential to 4.6) and yes, the freeware version of Opera 7.0 contains a popup blocker.
