In the days before wrestling websites, the main source of wrestling news were wrestling magazines.

Even though the news in them was behind about 3 weeks, you were able to catch up on news about other federations and wrestlers.

I always got Pro Wrestling Illustrated and Inside wrestling on a regular basis. Wrestling eye was decent also

Kinda makes you think when the #1 rapper is white and the #1 golfer is black

Dude, I read all the Aptner mags. I started with "The Wrestler", which was ok. I then graduated to "Inside Wrestling" when the guy at our newstand started stocking it. Most notable here was the "roll call of champions" and the top 15 rankings, which were absent in the other mags. But I always wanted Pro Wrestling Illustrated, the flagship mag. But the guy who stocked it didn't carry it(come to think of it, that's a thread to itself, the dying off of the neighborhood soda jerk/cigar shop/newstand where men hung out, bought bus and lotto tickets and complained and had the rare chance to mingle with kids buying candy, comics and magazines, my shop was "Feigelsons", but on topic). Full color centerfolds, best match, toughest opponent, Eddie Elner's heel column. Great stuff. By then I was hooked, reading about the exploits of the Mid-South, the UWF, Stampede Wrestling, the Pacific Northwest and Florida Championship wrestling, not to mention the WWF, AWA and NWA that I was getting on cable(eventually the UWF too). And with that, I was also reading "Sports Review Wrestling"(another vastly underrated Aptner mag) and buying the quarterly "Wrestling Superstars", featuring their dream matches(the only one I remember was actually between Savage and Luger and it was over Luger stealing Liz, I've been looking for a copy of this for 3 years or so, and it's even more bizzare now).

So if I"m wasting cash on them, it stands to reason I'd subscribe to the WWF magazine too. Ulimtately a waste of time, it was nicely put together, but no real info there. And I dabbled in the indy schwag magazines, that were super cheezy, packed with pics of guys from the stands since they couldn't get a press pass. But one definately stood out. "Wrestling Eye" was the first "mainstream" magazine to break kayfabe in some manner, referring to wrestlers by their real names on occasion, and more or less acknowledging the business was a work. Great stuff, but never really got out of the gate, and I later read on some website that they were heavily blackballed by the industry for what at the time(1987 or so) were unconsciable sins.

Has PWI released their Almanac for this year yet? I still have yet to find one and purchase it. That was always the best magazine and had the best Stats.

It was funny after the immediate news on the internet seeing the issues of PWI on the shelf that had two month old news on it. Especially for the hicks i worked with who would come to me with the "news" that they got from these issues and I would be like "that is SO yesterday man". I am an asshole.

I read most of the Apter mags. When those pretty much died out, I just gave up. The internet's - or the Wrestling Observer - is pretty much just as good.

I usually got ''The Wrestler'' (a buck seventy-five, can't beat that bargin back in '89! :) ), and picked up the special editions of PWI (their sham year-end ''awards,'' SuperCards, and the PWI 500). I still have the 1999 and 2000 editions of PWI 500, simply because a friend of mine made the list those years. I also used to read WWF Magazine when I was a kid, and took them to class for my teacher (a huge Hogan mark) to read.

Nowadays wrestling magazines cost waaay too much money. I am not paying $9.99 for a magazine with PPV results from two PPVs ago.
