Anybody ever have a job where you had to work the late shift? I start a new position tonight and I haven't worked steady late tours in years-I thought that was just for rookies. But- it's a better position, with more money and chance for advancement. The only problem is right now- I'm wide awake- I have a whole day to get through and if I keep this up-I'm going to a Real rough time tonight. I can't take any "sleep" aids and I'm not the type of guy to just lay down and go to sleep. I think I'm screwed-Please help-Oh PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Overnight radio shifts like R+F themselves!

I did college radio; then got hired by a station but like most stations the new guy gets the overhights. WHTG at the NJ shore; 1988 to about 1996.
1am-6am shift was Not hard at all; 5 hours, no problem.
But Man it screwed me up. No real partying, coz you gotta be at work right before the bars close, and getting home at 8am and trying to fall asleep was tough on most days, and torture when it was nice out in summer.

Sure if it was nice out you could just stay up and do your thing but you pay the price.

Essentially, what happened for me is I could sleep, but only in three or four hour blocks, which was fine, as long as i got one or two a day; then maybe passing out for 12 hours on the weekends.

Anywhoo...It didn't work for me; and I'm usually up all night anyway these days [see insomniac thread lol]

Mike

PS: Oh wait now I re-read reeshy, and reeshy needs advice, not my f-ing nostalgia trip. Reeshy, what did work was that I too, am not that lay-down boom-yer-asleep person either, but I got pretty good with practice. I sealed up all the windows so I could get the room pitch black [oohh, great movie, sorry.] and I'd fidget for a while but I was real surprised; I was falling asleep no problem. Hope it helps.

For fuck sake this one rambled. ha!

Mike

i've done alot of 3rd or "graveyard shift"...

sometimes you just have to wait til your butt is really dragging until you can get some decent sleep during the day...

it helps to have good shades or curtains that block out the light, and obviously some peace and quiet... I learned that if you want to be at your best during work hours then you basically have to have no life: come home go to sleep, wake up eat, go back to sleep...

if you want to have an active life during the day then you will feel like dukey during work hours... advice: sleep when you can...

here's a little something a co-worker passed around...

England is old and small and the local folks started
running out of
places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins
and would take
the bones to a "bone-house" and reuse the grave. When
reopening these
coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have
scratch marks on the inside
and they realized they had been burying people alive.
So they thought they
would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it
through the
coffin and upthrough the ground and tie it to a bell.
Someone would have to
sit out in the graveyard all night ("the graveyard
shift") to listen for the bell;
thus, someone could be "saved by the bell" or was
considered
a "dead ringer."

in the beginninf of april i started working at target. i work 10pm-6am (lately ive been getting out a half hour - an hour late). overnight stocking so there are no customers(guests) in the store. i took this job for two main reasons: 1) i am awake anyway, when i used to have no job i would stay up until about that time anyway, at least now i am getting paid for it. 2) i am really bad at dealing with people and with this job i dont have to talk to anyone.

it is hard work but i enjoy my job because it keeps me moving at all times.

it helps to have good shades or curtains that block out the light, and obviously some peace and quiet... I learned that if you want to be at your best during work hours then you basically have to have no life: come home go to sleep, wake up eat, go back to sleep...

i TOTALLy agree with all this, it is so true

I had the over night shift at Dunkin Donuts for a few weeks until I found something better. The job made me feel bad; with all the starving kids in this world and there I was at 2 am throwing pounds upon pounds of donuts, bagels and muffins in the dumpster.

Another thing that sucked is the fact that NJ transit buses do not run at 4 in the morning when my shift was done, I'd have to sit at the stop until 6-6:30.

I thought that was just for rookies
Indeed, my 1st 8 months were spent on the midnite-8 tour. I was young and single, and my advice may not work for you, but what I did was just changed my whole biological timing; I'd wake up at 8pm and have breakfast, get ready for work, have a real dinner at work around 3 am, then when I got home I'd have a midnight snack and go to bed around noon. After awhile, your body adjusts and thinks all this is normal. Days off were a bitch though, cause naturally, youd wanna change your routine a bit, then get back into it for your monday...anyway, congrats on the new position and good luck brother!

i would have to say that totally sucks...

Another thing is if you have a long commute and you are driving, it could be a tortuous drive home in the morning...

When I worked midnight's in Colgate sometimes I had to get the "coffee order". Sometimes for up to 20 people, it's basically what i did all night besides doing a little cleanup work around the production lines. I had to go to The Flamingo Diner in downtown Jersey City. Some people had no consideration when placing their order, "give me a cheeseburger, medium rare, a "little" bit of ketchup and "alot" of mayo, oh yeah, and ask them to toast the bun a little" I'm like "Yeah, go F yourself"

NAH! I did the best i could. It always seemed that when you were missing a coffee it happened to be for the nicest person there and you felt horrible... I would usually forego my break and go back to pick it up...

I'd love to work the midnight shift somewhere. Especially like Amy said, to be able to work and not have to deal with anyone. I mean, I can do it, but I like to work alone, or with other people but not deal with customers.

I like being alone, so whenever an opportunity pops up to work late, I take it.

Last summer, I had to work a promotion where we had people camping out to win a car. Since we legally had to have a staff member in the area 24/7, I gladly took the 12am-6am shift. It was quiet, I could surf the net and watch DVDs thanks to my laptop, and I got all the free Chilis' food I could eat. It was great.
