View Full Version : Who can think of movies that defined the starring actor?
TheMojoPin

Alright, now someone like Al Pacino starred in and was brilliant in "The Godfather"...but when you see Pacino, you don't just automatically assume "Michael Corleone"...in fact, you might be able to picture other people taking the role.
But take a film like "The Big Lebowski", where Jeff Bridges IS The Dude. It's practically impossible to associate the role with anyone else, and when you see the guy, you just immediately think, "THE DUDE!"
I just re-watched a film I hadn't seen in years and discovered it starred a character who very much defines the actor as The Dude did for Jeff..."Zero Effect". I can't STAND Bill Pullman, but he is nothing short of brilliant in "Zero Effect", and now whenever I see him I can only think of his role in that film...he made it, it made him, the stars were aligned, whatevever, but magic was made. Bill Pullman IS the world's most private detective.
<img src=http://barrypotter.com/images/zeroeffect.jpg>
Another film like these two is "Fight Club". Norton/Pitt ARE the narrator, and I find it near impossible to picture just ONE of them not playing their half or the half, much less BOTH of them not being in it. Again, a film defined just as much by the leading actors as the actors are defined by their roles in the film.
Can anyone else think of similar roles? I think they're few and far between, unfortunately...but when you stumble across them, it's usually a sure sign of a pretty damn near perfect film...

George C. Scott, "Patton"
Ronald Reagan (George Gipp), "Knute Rockne All American"
Clint Eastwood, The Dirty Harry movies.
Yul Brynner, "The King and I"
EDIT: I think I mistook your interpretation of "defined". I took it to mean either the actor will forever be known by the role or, in the case of Reagan, he adopted much of the persona/myth of the character.

NICE. Perfect calls with Scott and Eastwood...THAT'S what I'm talking about...
Or the epitome, Orson Welles as Charles Foster Kane, or since it was borught up in another thread, Bogart in "Casablanca"...or Bill Murray in "Rushmore"...

Clint Eastwood, The Dirty Harry movies.
I was thinking the same thing.
Mel Gibson - Lethal Weapon & Mad Max
Charlton Heston - 10 Commandments & Planet of the Apes.
Jimmy Stewart - It's a Wonderful Life, Harvey, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Cary Grant - His Girl Friday, Mr. Blandings builds his dream house, The Awful Truth
Arnold Schwarzenegger - Terminator
Wallace Shawn - The Princess Bride - Vizzini
Micheal Keaton - Mr. Mom, Night Shift
We need everyone to keep spreading the word about Ron and Fez. Get you friends, coworkers, hell anyone you talk to get them to listen.

John Wayne - Sands of Iwo Jima. Plus a billion different westerns.
Guy Pearce / Russell Crowe / Kevin Spacey / James Cromwell in L.A. Confidential.
Rowan Atkinson - Blackadder (Blackadder Goes Forth). Fuck this Mr. Bean shit. After the final episode of BA, he'll always be Blackadder to me. Yeah, I know, that's a TV show and not a movie, but he deserves better recognition than goddamn Mr. Bean.
Morgan Freeman & Tim Robbins - The Shawshank Redemption. Perhaps the only Tim Robbins movie I can watch. So good it makes me forget how nauseatingly annoying his politics are.
Chow Yun Fat - virtually every movie he's ever been in.
Bruce Campbell - The Evil Dead films. He'll still be signing chainsaws when he turns 80.

It's weird because he had been in "Mean Streets" and had won a best supporting Oscar for "Godfather II" but I think "Taxi Driver" was the defining role for De Niro.
"The Graduate" for Dustin Hoffman.
"On the Waterfront" for Marlon Brando.
Kevin Spacey's career didn't start sailing until "Usual Suspects."
"The Fugitive" for Tommy Lee Jones.

Don't leave Norton out in the cold! Pitt got the flashier role, but Norton gave it the "meat"...the two worked off of each other perfectly...replace either one, and the film would probably have been ruined.

I think he plays a totally different type of character in "Bull", and it's by far his best and most complicated role...but what I see him DEFINED by is the character he played in "Casino". The "Bull" role is too complex, "My Cousin Vinnie" is too goofy/nice..."Casino" is where "crazy mobster murder pscho fuck"-Pesci is played to the hilt.

I'm the reverse. There's nothing to the character in "Goodfellas". He's just there to kill people and say "fuck" a lot. He does the same in "Casino", but is actually working so many angles at the same time...Vegas, his family, Ace's wife, the bosses back home...that I just find that character a million times more interesting.

He has his defining moments in Usual Suspects, which in and of itself is a magnificent movie but in American beauty Spacey shines. Neither movie is better than the other but the role of Lester Burnham was written for him and Alan Ball didn't even know it.

Can anyone else think of similar roles? I think they're few and far between, unfortunately...but when you stumble across them, it's usually a sure sign of a pretty damn near perfect film...According to this thread, every movie to come out in the past 25 years has this "rare, magical quality". Somewhere on the first page, this turned into the "Name a movie you like" thread. Okay, so I'm bitchy because I couldn't think of anything.

He has his defining moments in Usual Suspects, which in and of itself is a magnificent movie but in American beauty Spacey shines. Neither movie is better than the other but the role of Lester Burnham was written for him and Alan Ball didn't even know it.
Depends on which Kevin Spacey you want...I like spooky Kevin Spacey...you must like introspective Kevin Spacey....

some of these posts are really starting to bother me...
INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE FOR TOM CRUISE?
This choice is based on my opinion that no one could have played him better. He defined that role beautifully.

Marlon Brando - Most definitely Stanley Kowalski - Street Car Named Desire
Lee Marvin - The Dirty Dozen - I know it's already been posted but needs to be repeated.
Rebecca Demornay - Peyton Flanders / Mrs. Mott - Hand that Rocks the Cradle
Richard Gere - Julian Kaye - American Gigolo
Kevin Costner - Lt. John Dunbar - Dances with Wolves

According to this thread, every movie to come out in the past 25 years has this "rare, magical quality".
I think I can count on one hand the number of films named here that I consider to be along the lines of "Lebowski" or "Zero Effect" in terms of defining the actor. But hey, who am I to shit on everyone's favorites?

I may have been mistaken Mojo but I thought we were allowed to include roles that you felt could not be done any better by other actors.

Kind of. That's definitely part of it...but on the flipside, what I was REALLY going for was roles played so perfectly by an actor that whenever you think of them or even see them in another film, you can really only picture that one perfect character, since they played it THAT well. Hence, the role that "defined" them...

God help me for saying this but.....
Streisand as Funny Girl
also Parker Posey as "Darla" in Dazed & Confused.
Dunno if this was mentioned or not:
Christopher Reeve as Superman or
Michael Keaton as Batman for that matter.

I was trying to think of a defining role for Danny DeVito but couldn't.
Paul Newman will always be the Hustler.
Harrison Ford should always and only be Indiana Jones.
Phillip Seymor Hoffman as Scottie in "Boogie Nights".
Gabriel Byrne for "Miller's Crossing."
Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca.

That's it, my friend. That is defintely it. I was never really into the "Romancing the Stone" movies and his part in "L.A. Confidential," while cool, was maybe too small. But that little monkey should have won an Oscar for that sick little character!

It may have been a much smaller role, but I can't see him in anything but "Punch Drunk Love" now. What a great little film, and the role he played was just perfect.
