So, what's everyone think? It's shaping up to look like a pretty powerful peice of equipment and Sony feels they are finally ready to enter the portable market. Nintendo's been the dominating force in this market for over a decade. Do you think Nintendo's got a secret weapon in the works to answer back and retain the throne, or are they just sitting around completely oblivious? Afterall, the GBA-SP only came out in March. Will Sony do to the portable market what they've accomplished in the console world? Or will it just be another failed competitor?

This is really bad news for Nintendo because most of their money comes from their Game Boy Advance sails due to the fact that they have no competition.

Young children make up a big part of portable sales and having a CD for PSP isn't going to be good. You can't have little kids playing and throwing around CDs like you can with cartridges.

Also Nintendo has a whole system that they can port to GBA, and Sony doesn't have as much.

Is this supposed to be a 3D handheld system? I think that's what I heard. If so that's a bad idea. With the current graphics so good it's going to be hard to go back to bad polygon counts.

Nintendo always wins.

It seems that they have at least good timing. The sooner the psp hits the streets, the more sales they will generate. Since Nintendo just released the sp, they are not in position to put out a new product yet.

But, Nintendo has had a way of rolling over any and every portable.

Also, Sony has quite a large and loyal fan base. I wouldnt be surprised if the psp did pretty well.

ok ive been handling Cd's since i was like 7. and little kids have ps2's and dvd players and a million other things that use discs and not cartridges.

secondly, the psp will b available to link to ps2. and squaresoft has already promised that the wave of final fantasy's after the psp-ps2 connection, will all have minigames and secrets only available to those who have both.

umm and psp will have grafix that are between ps1's and ps2's, they wont b piss poor.

and nintendo hasnt won anything sicne Super Nintendo. Playstation in all its forms are better than Nintendo's counterpart. cube has some great titles, but theyre rpgs and sports games suck...and i think you should accept that.

Alright, I admitt it, you brought up a bunch of good points. And I didn't see that it was going to between PSX and PS2, so that's a positive.

Playstation in all its forms are better than Nintendo's counterpart.

This is the only thing I don't agree with. Sure you think that way because you seem to love RPG's but that doesn't mean Sony's systems are better. I loved the first Playstation and PS2, but I'm always loyal to Nintendo for it's first party games.

One more question. Is there anything on the launch price for PSP?

Its not going to be released until next year, but a developer at sony (i dont know his name, but he is japanese if that helps) expects to move 10 million units the first year.

To me that means that it will be competitvely priced.

But what do you think of nokia(?) releasing the phone/portable game/many other gadget device? I read that it was going to be priced at $300. Sounds like a flop to me

yes, ill admit that my love of rpg's make my opinions biased but, nintendo's sports games suck, but i blame the controller for that. i mean i loved metroid: prime. i think its still the best game for cube. but when i saw the new Link......he looked like a fag. he looked like he should be sitting next to Ron instead of Fez. and the once great Residnet Evil titles have been corrupted on Cube....but the problem is mostly the controller. but cube is redeemed for ff:crystal chronicles.....i think u would like that knick...its an action game with rpg elements..sorta like ocarina of time.

PSP's release date is set for the "end of 2004". This means Nintendo has time to get working on something new, and also will put a decent amount of time between the GBA-SP and their next handheld.
- Point awarded to: Nintendo.

Sony projects 10 million units sold within the first year of PSP's release. This kind of confidence from Sony indicates heavy 3rd-party interest in their product... something that systems like Nokia's portable game machine/phone, the WonderSwan, the Neo Geo Pocket, and other failed potential "Game Boy Killers" NEVER had.
- Point awarded to: Sony.

And we thought the console wars of the early-mid 90's were heated. Looks like Nintendo and Sony could be going head-to-head OLD SCHOOL STYLE. Booyah!

just a question:
i thought game-gear by sega held its own against gameboy at least for the mid-90's? i know everything changed once gameboy went thinner and got color, but game gear was color first.

Someone PLEASE post a link to info on this, and pictures too! I need to know more about it. It sounds like a portable system that uses CD's instead of cartidges? How annoying is that? Now I need a mini CD carring case for my cd's, and they can get scratched. This sounds like a bad idea.

I fucking HATE that new feature that doesn't let you post when there's two RF.net windows open. I just typed like 4 great paragraphs and lost it all cuzza that shit. I'll just type the abridged Cliff Notes version now and see how much of it I can remember...

Phixion - Yes, of all of Game Boy's "competitors", the Game Gear probably held on the longest, but you gotta remember, even though it introduced color first, that thing fucking ATE batteries. It literally went through 6 AA's every hour and 15 minutes. Also, if the crappy low-tech lighting source died or broke, the system was SHOT. No light, no screen. Big, badly designed, and it sucked the juice out of batteries faster than a Vietnamese whore. It just couldn't last.

Moe - As of right now, it seems the PSP's gonna use some new CD format with discs about 2 or 3 inches wide, similar to a Sony mini-discs. Although they'll probably be able to hold plenty more than any cartridge, using a disc medium means MOVING PARTS. This could result in battery-life issues, but I trust Sony knows what they're doing.

yea i remember that game gear ate batteries thats y i always hated it.

and as for the cd itll b similar in size to what cube uses as discs now, however itll hold 3x more data than a cd-rom.

The Lynx was the first color portable, it had great graphics and, like Sega's, it ate batteries.

I wonder how they will deal with the moving parts of a cd player in a portable. Will it be sufficiently shock-proofed? Music is shock-proofed by reading ahead and storing it in memory. Can a game do the same if it doesn't know what you'll do next?

Abive is the disc, no pics of the machine have shown up yet.

And I think the N-Gage will crash and burn.

Judging by those pictures on pspinsider.com, looks like they packed that UMD disc into a cartridge to protect from piracy. Nice move.

I also received word from someone who works at Nintendo that they've been working on the next Game Boy for a good year now.

The good thing about cds over cartridges is that cds are much easier to clean, and cartridges are bitches to clean and collect a lot of crap.

That picture is almost definitely a mock-up. Pocket IGN still says there's no picture of the system available, and that thing just looks too damn shitty to be the real deal.
