It's getting ridiculous, almost no kids play outside anymore. I rarely see them and if I do it's usually on a bike going to someone else's house to sit on their lazy asses inside.

What happened to kick ball and wiffle ball and drawing on the road in chalk and riding bikes and getting dirty?? I feel like kids are missing out on a great childhood. I understand that there's video games and computers and TV but I'm MAKING my child play outside, they won't regret it, although them might be alone.

A friend and I were driving through a residential area and there were no kids anywhere, and then we saw one. Guess what he was doing?? Standing out on the sidewalk playing a fucking Gameboy! I can see it now:

"But Mom, I don't want to go outside."
"You WILL go outside."
"Fine, but I'm bringing my Gameboy with me."

I do!

When I was a kid, we always played outside, all-year round.

Plus, we had the advantage of having lots of state property in our neighborhood: woods, a big field and a pond.

Same with me. I was lucky to have an awesome neighborhood with lots of yards, woods, even a mansion on a hill. Lots of wiffle ball. Kick the can. Big wheel derbies when we were very young. Playing war back the woods was my favorite. Throwing a tennis ball over the telephone wire for a game of "baseball" - one bounce, single, two bounce double, etc. Also with a tennis ball - suicide against the chapel wall. Anyone build tree forts anymore? What about just plain fishing? Every kid I knew wanted a fishing rod for Christmas.

Enough with the sigpics.

We would always be outside doing something as a kid. Playing wiffle ball, football, soccer, street hockey, tag, smear the queer, dodge ball, etc.

We did not have any parks where I lived in NY so we would go to an open field in the cemetary to play football.

What was your favorite game of tag? I always loved TV tag and hide and go seek.

These kids today don't have any imagination everything has to be organized and spelled out for them.

Parents take the video games away from your kids and make them go outside!!!!!!!!!!!!

We need everyone to keep spreading the word about Ron and Fez. Get you friends, coworkers, hell anyone you talk to get them to listen.

I agree, my nephew brings his gameboy everywhere and plays some strange Jap Card game. He even was playing it at Yankee Stadium, and I had to tell him that Giambi was up to get him to watch the game! Dodgeball Kickball, pick-up football, where has it gone. Long summer days where you played with your friends till the sun went down, and you fell asleep exhausted. I think that was childhood the way it should be- not infront of a PC.

I remember the long summer days playing pick-up football, baseball till the sun went down. Playing so long that you fell asleep exausted- that was childhood. I think I am glad that I was already in my teens when the video games arrived.

It has to do with the way kids are brought up today, if little jimmy breaks an arm playing with bobby BOOM! thats a lawsuit, and plus kids dont always live near each other. In my childhood i never lived near anyone, so therefore i didnt need to go anywhere.

On a nice day, me and my brother would leave the house right after breakfast and not go home till after dark!! There was just too much stuff to do- play stickball, chase the dog at Pelham Bay Park, throw stones in the Sound, steal candybars from the corner store etc. All in all, kids today are just missing their childhood by staying home in front of the video game or computer!!! Poor kids!!!

when I was younger I remember going out at 8am and not coming home until 9pm and playing in the park all day. Now you can't even get a kid to walk to the store for milk. Lazy basterds

My favorite game growing up was Manhunt. The boys always said it was not hide and seek but I never saw the difference.

It isn't as safe out there for kids as it was. Drug dealers wanting to start them young. Notices from the school about what sex offender moved into the neighborhood. I want my kid out there scraping his knees and banging up his elbows. If he is was to run around it was at the park. Now someone got shot there a few months ago. It is really scary for a parent. You send your kid outside to play you want them to come back.

I am, and always will be,in a state of sulky dissatisfaction.

We were always outside during the summer playing baseball. Growing up in an italian neighborhood around 6pm we would hear all the mothers calling in their kids for dinner.

I loved playing outside as a kid, off the stairs, street hockey, whiffle ball, catch, manhunt, tag all kinds of cool shit.

And I was a skinny kid because of it.

We used to go door to door of our friends "gettin' guys" for whatever games or activities some of us had come up with that day.
We seldom played inside when it was nice out. Indeed, it did not have to be nice, we'd be out there in almost any weather.
These days, if the kids are going to get together outside, the parents have to set it up, plus they gotta organize all the fun out of it. The kids just can't play sandlot football, oh no, they gotta be in a league with uniforms and referees and coaches and schedules and shit.

When I get home, I don't hear kids outside at all, hell- I don't even see kids outside as I drive home from the bus. All this online chatting and video games are just taking up all of their time.

Future generations will have enormous thumbs (from all those aliens they kill), small legs and arms (from lack of use), and eyes that can adjust instantly to a monitor or TV. This will come soon after the average weight goes up about 15-20 pounds or more.

I work in a dental office, and when adults make appointments, they have to check their kids' schedules to see what organized activity they have to drive them to first. We played in the street in front of the house - my parents never had to drive me anywhere so I could "play". We stayed outside as much as possible, and made up our own games. I'm glad I'm not a kid now, and I'm glad I don't have kids, so I don't have to spend my entire life acting as their chauffer.

> Johnnie Jumped The White Horse
> Box Ball
> O U T
> Stickball
> Wiffle Ball
> Baseball, Football, Basketball
> Tag
> Hide And Seek
> Bottle Caps
> Playing Cards
> Punch Ball

We practically lived out in the Park, on the corner, in the street, or in the schoolyards...
At times there could be up to 20 of us "hanging out". There was alot of "inner city" rivalries. we were Jersey Ave and we would play against 2nd St, the Lakewood(the cool guido boys), Shannon's Pub(the Irish guys), various Latin gangs and Black guys from the Projects...
Kids from Greenville and the Heights... Sometimes kids came in from the Bronx or we would go out to Brooklyn(mostly to play football)

To be honest, I'm not sure "hanging out" is such a good thing today. There is some truth to the saying "the world changes"... Organized sports seem to be a good thing and in the US today, it's a good thing to be up on technology. There are very few good paying Manufacturing jobs to be had... ALTHOUGH there are vast amounts of opportunity if you can FOCUS in on what you want to do...

So true - I never had kids, so no worries - I'd hate to be a kid these days - everything is organized and scheduled - no freedom! We did whatever we wanted to when I grew up - played stickball, touch football, trackdown, etc., and no fear of molestation or kidnapping - just fear of getting hollered at if we came home after dark - it's a whole different world, and not for the better.

I think alot of parents now feel its safer for their kids to be inside and less likely that they will get hurt, abducted, lost,in trouble or worse. Seeing how stuff like that Elizabeth Smart girl or these other girls that get taken or raped, I almost feel if I had a girl I would not want her to have any adult male contact because there are sickos out there.
But I remember being a kid and hanging out outside all year long too. I remember days when it had just been a huge snow storm and walking around with my friends and it was like total silence and it was eerie and beautiful too. I rode my bike and hung out at the swamp and railroad tracks and built forts and stuff. It was great! Best time of my life. I never understood the attraction of video games, but I think thats what these kids are doing inside. I think kids today are rushed into adulthood. Boys and girls are dating at like 11 years old and I think its so wrong. They are adults forever! Let them be kids!!
I have relatives that let their little 8 and 9 year old daughters dress like sluts and wear make up and it makes me sick! I see these stores like Rave Girl and others that emphesise clothing and makeup. Its just a marketing ruse to get them thinking like adults earlier and buying shit.. I was a kid and it was free and healthier!

I almost feel if I had a girl I would not want her
to have any adult male contact because there are
sickos out there.

The sickos were always there, it has just finally been
brought out into the public consciousness in the past
20 years or so. One other thing to remember is that
most cases of molestation happen within the family, not
from strangers. I have a brother-in-law who showed
just a little bit too much interest in my little girl one day
and it creeped me out. She will never be alone with
him, and if I pegged him wrong, I'm sorry, but I'd rather
be wrong and make sure she remains safe.

All that said, even though I've been living in a
near-palatial estate for the past two years, with about
300 yards between houses, I'm still reluctant to let my
kids play outside these days. We are getting ready to
downsize and move to a townhouse closer to DC, and
I'll probably be even less comfortable letting them play
outside. At least with the houses (much!) closer
together they may make friends more easily, but I am
going to be with them if they go outside.

Maybe when they're older I'll be able to handle it. But I
remember being 5 and 6 years old and going outside to
play by myself. It's just a fucked up world these days.

I used to play outside all year round, too. Me and my freinds used to play with matchbox and hotwheels cars in the daytime outside in the dirt underneath a tree, and at night when everyone was done eating, we'd have a good time playing hide and go seek, kick ball, tag, anything until like 9:00 when our parents will call us in to go to bed.

Nowadays, I tell my kids to go outside and get some fresh air and play, they look at me like i'm crazy! Lazy bastards.....

You are so right! Kids aren't allowed to be kids for more than 5 minutes anymore - once they're out of diapers, it's off to preschool, and start scheduling play dates, etc, etc. I can't even imagine my mom or dad getting involved in who I played with and when i played with them... My dad took me to the movies and the aprk, and I hung out with the kids in my neighborhood all day long, UNSUPERVISED, no less! We were allowed to make up our own games, or just run around free - I loved my bicycle, too - at the time, it was as good as having a car! Now, all the little girls look like prostitutes on the make, and the boys are so supervised, they don't even get dirty without Mom's permission - it's almost more fun going to work...

Hope I die before I get old...

When I think about that time in my life, I remember thinking how I couldnt wait to grow up. Now, I wish I was there again! My friend and I would go behind this appliance store and take one of the refrigorator boxes and make a club house in his back yard! We would be carrying the thing like a mile to get back home too. I guess the difference now is that kids dont have a Mom at the house waiting for them anymore. All these kids moms are at work, so whoever is "supervising" them wouldnt dare to let them go walking around for fear of being sued if they lost their kids. I really wish there was a way back, but I know there isnt. I dont know why any mom would let their daughters dress like this and wear this slutty make up. Girls and so cute when they are young, and the only reason women wear make up is to make them appear younger! When these little kids (Jon Binet Ramsy?) started wearing make-up it seemed to me a turning point. Now I see news storys about how a larger percentage of adolscent children have been sexually active at younger and younger ages. I remember a news story maybe last year(?) about these 2nd grader boys who had a girl in their class going down on them while the teacher read a paper! Honestly, I have no idea when kids started getting this way and to me its a true crime to rush these innocents into adulthood. Oh, its "cul-de-sac" ...lol :)

So true! It was different when mothers actually raised their own children, and didn't have to leave them with strangers who are paid to watch them - it's a shame when life is so expensive, moms can't stay home to raise their own kids - I'm glad I never had kids - personally, I find it hard to take care of myself!
