Yesterday I bought a Kenneth Cole watch for formal occasions, it's nice watch but I didn't care for the watch band that came with it. Later I was in another store in a different mall and I found the exact band that I wanted for the watch. The girl was very nice in replacing the band for me, she even changed the buckle on the band to the original and it now has a very classy look to it. I paid her for the band and went on my way. But at the time I was wondering if this was a situation that the proper thing to do would be to give her a tip.

I've always replaced my own bands in the past, and this girl seemed to have gone out of her way to do this and even the thing with the buckle, so I don't know if she was expecting a tip or if it's bad ettitquete to not give a tip for this.

dont worry about it, its their job. i dont mean it in the "waitress that gets paid way below minimum wage" type way either. they get paid moderately well for working on the watches and selling them. i used to work on watches at a jewelry store. i got paid well for very little work, and i never got tipped.

I agree. I don't think a tip is the norm in that situation.

Not at all, i think you handeled it perfectly fine, in fact take into consideration that she may be getting a comission on what she sells.
Normal tiping scenarios are at restaurants, you tip the host for seating you, and the wait person. the cocktail waitress, the bartender.....and you cannot forget at STRIP CLUBS. NEVER forget those ladies!!!! Vallet parking, in the salon, doormen etc....I DO believe in giving at LEAST 20% in all situations.

ive never believed in the notion of "having to tip". Tipping is done to make the giver feel good about acknowledging a service above and beyond. In our society however we tip ( and i try to tip well) in restaraunts you frequent so as not to be a victim of retribution ( think of that scene in Road Trip and the powdered sugar on the french toast).
If the waiter knows youll tip they may be LESS likely to spit in your food.
NEVER go back to a restaraunt youve stiffed the waiter.

i wouldnt give your watch band thing a second thought.

Good to know, thanks. It was just odd that she was so willing to do it, when I've never had someone ask me before, so I wasn't sure.

i essentially agree with the others. while i dont think it's necessary or typical to tip in this type of situation, whether it was "tip worthy" is another issue. if you felt that she went out of her way to help you and all that, then there's nothing wrong if you decide to tip. however, you did nothing wrong in not tipping, and i wouldnt lose any sleep over it at all.

Some lady tipped me a dollar for carrying a toaster oven out to her car. It was very weird, but I still took it. I usually only tip in restaurants and go with the 20% thing. I wouldn't worry.. she probably just gives good customer service.

I only tip at resturants, and it's usually 200% of the tax. It's all for the waitor, because the host really just seats you, and their job isnt stressful.

I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's fucked up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college bullshit I got two words for that: learn to fuckin' type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big fuckin' surprise.

Oh I'm not going to either, I was just wondering at the time - and then I saw the watch earlier and remembered thinking about it.

what do you tip a paper"boy" these days?
I used to deliver newsday when i was a kid, and the average tip was $0.75. it worked out to $5 a week when weekly subscriptions were $4.25. but ofcourse that was average. some gave no tip some gave a quarter, whatver you get the idea. but this was 25 years ago.
Now, i don't see the guy who delivers it, i don't know his name or have anyway to contact him.
I just started to get a delivery. So what's the tip etiquette here?

I dont know what this newspaper you speak of is. I only know Drudge Report and YouTube Featured videos. 75 cents is like 17% of 4.25 but its more likely that it was a convenient amount to give an even 5 so my vote is you go towards the closest bill. That said, I have absolutely NO idea what a newspaper costs these days so that may be a ridiculous suggestion.

I had a bedroom set delivered yesterday, in the snow, my instinct was to tip until I had this conversation with the guy:
Him: "One of the lights doesn't work."
"So are you going to fix it?"
"Naaahhh"
"Do you know how to fix it?"
"I dunno"
"You don't know how to fix it or you don't know if you know how to fix it."
"I dunno"

If you aren't going to make any kind of effort I'm not going to either.

Now my plow guy... he's only charging me 20 bucks a pop which is really good considering the size and pain in the ass factor of my driveway so my instinct is to toss him a bit extra but if I start to toss in a little extra every time I'm essentially locking myself in to a higher rate for as long as he plows for me, and if I try to guess when the last storm is going to be and tip him at the end of the season I'm probably going to be wrong. Oh, what to do, what to do.

every situation and every person is different but if you felt that the person went above and beyond their job description and provided a great service to you then a small tip would go a long way in conveying that

That's pretty cool. Remind me next year. Isn't he doing an 8-10 stretch upstate?

How do you pay your plow guy? He stop at the door or bill you later? Do you use a service or an individual? If it's a service, are you sure it's the same guy every time? Either way, if you have a way to contact, I would either visit the office or call for an address to mail to them. There are ways to send a tip at the end of the season as a thank you.

Have done this in the past, it's usually greatly appreciated it seems. Generally if someone seems to have a pretty shitty job, I'll tip em for good service
