View Full Version : dumbest rules in wrestling

I remember when I first started watching wrestling, A wrestler could get disqualified if he threw another wrestler over the top rope in a regular match.
This rule was revoked when WCW withdrew from the NWA
Kinda makes you think when the #1 rapper is white and the #1 golfer is black

WCW used that rule a little while after they withdrew from the NWA, because i remember someone getting DQed at Clash Of The champions on year for doing so.
Another bonehead rule was the no powerbombing rule in WCW for a while

Easily the dumbest rule and one the that made me livid was the straps could not be won if the champion(s) were disqualified.

thats another assinine rule. it gives the champs an advantage. Why can't it just be like a normal match and the winner gets the belt

Remember the "no bleeding in Maryland rule?"
Luger had Flair in the torture rack at the Great American Bash in baltimore but the match was stopped because luger had some little cut on his forehead

Sometimes there were matches, single matches mind you, on WCW and someone would use an illegal object and would not be disqualified, but if they were to hit them with a low blow, they were automatically DQ.

The "moves off the top rope are banned" rule that Bill Watts enacted upon taking control of WCW in the early 90s was thoroughly retarded, and was revoked shortly after it began.
Another bonehead rule was the no powerbombing rule in WCW for a while
Wasn't that after Nash practically Ganso Bombed Big Show? Hell, Nash has trouble giving his poochie bombs to lightweights like Jericho these days.
Remember the "no bleeding in Maryland rule?"
It's a real rule. Ballz Mahoney got banned by the State Athletic Commission from wrestling again in MD after one of his typical hardcore matches had him sporting the crimson mask.

yes it was. i remember it like yesterday. the memories. The Giant almost had his "neck broken" by Nash and then the WCW commishioner banned the powerbomb for like a year or something. then there was the powerbomb match and the only way to win was by using th poerbomb on your oponent. It was Nash vs. The Giant. Of course the Giant won, and the ban was lifted

The piledriver was illegal in some states during the 70's and 80's
Ever since the Piledriver to Austin in 97 from Owen Hart, you hardly ever see it used. once n a while taker will use the tombstone if he cant lift a wrestler up for the last ride
Kinda makes you think when the #1 rapper is white and the #1 golfer is black

The piledriver was banned because of people landing it wrong and compressing vertibrate of their opponents ala Owen Hart vs Steve Austin

Remember the "no bleeding in Maryland rule?"
Luger had Flair in the torture rack at the Great American Bash in baltimore but the match was stopped because luger had some little cut on his forehead
That right there is when the NWA lost whatever momentum they had toward the WWF. Remember, they were off a VERY respectable showing of Clash of the Champions with the Sting/Flair classic, against a loaded Wrestlemania IV card, and had some forward momentum working. At that same point, Lex "Liz-Killer" Luger actually had some momentum working having split from the Horsemen, and going after Flair's belt. I was watching that pay-per-view for some reason(don't know why, certainly didn't order it, may have just come crystal clear as some PPV's did in those early days) and when Luger got Flair up in the torture rack, I was going crazy. Because if memory serves, the title could change hand on a DQ for that match, and it was to be Luger's last shot at the title, so the Horsmen COULD NOT interfere. And the swerve was well executed as Tommy Young leaned in to check Luger's cut, but it looked like Flair was giving up. He stops the match, and right there was the peak of the NWA. That place went absolutley nuts, and the NWA crowd, which loved Luger in strange and mysterious ways that no crowd ever likewise embraced ol Larry came unglued. Steve Williams, Sting and Nikita all stormed the ring, you know, shirts off to show they were just hanging in the locker room. And what should have been a glorious, crowning moment for Luger starting a new run....
Went down Crockett's toilet thanks to Ray Iannucci of the Maryland State Athletic Commision.
And of course, it became why watch if Flair was just going to keep winning. Sure he'd job it off to Ron Garvin or Ricky Steamboat, but Sting or Luger should have been wearing that belt then, and they could have at least been as big as the Macho Man potentially.
Ah memories.
As for the stupidest rule, I think the ring robe break is outdated, especially in the PRIDE fighting and UFC era. Let a guy get choked out on ring ropes nowadays.

I always thought the tag ropes (the white strings tied to the top turnbuckle) were unnecessary... if you tagged in your partner, but he wasn't holding on to the rope, the ref would declare an illegal tag and wouldn't allow the fresh partner in. The big leagues did away with those years ago, but there's quite a few indies that still have the ropes.

The stupid flag rule during scaffold matches. These matches were stupid by themselves. But thanks to the large frame of PN News, a dumb rule was added that said the first wrestler to capture the other teams flag would win. This took place during the PN News & Bobby Eaton vs Steve Austin and Terrence Taylor Scaffold match at Great American bash 1991. If I must choose between scaffold matches, I'll take the Midnight Express-Rock N' Roll Express ones. At least they were throwing each other off the scaffold.

Speaking of the the tag ropes, how could you forget that one's partner must also have both feet on the apron in order to make the tag.

(1) How about when a wrestler goes for a high risk manuever on the top ropes and the referee starts counting as if there is a time limit "upstairs" and they would be disqualified if they were up there "too long". The top ropes are a part of the ring.
(2) Another is when two people are lying on the mat at the same time and the referee counts to ten before at least one gets up. How often do you see matches end because both competitors fail to get up for this supposed "ten count"?

See this is a stupid rule, but a great one at once, because of the great heel potential for choking guys out with that rope. For that reason alone, good rule, and I"m glad they brought it back.

I thought I remember posting this, but I guess it didn't go through: A fun fact about the piledriver - it's banned in Mexico, and when the rudos (heels in lucha libre) perform the move, it's the ULTIMATE heat getter. I remember seeing a match from way back - late 80s, early 90s - where a rudo piledrived a tecnico and the crowd damn near RIOTED.
Superclerk: never mention the PN News scaffold match again. I had almost erased that abomination from my memory.
As for the tag rope rule, I like it. It's a nice throwback to the old school days. Ring of Honor brought the practice back, and what do you know? Looks like the WWE is using it now all of a sudden.
(1) How about when a wrestler goes for a high risk manuever on the top ropes and the referee starts counting as if there is a time limit "upstairs" and they would be disqualified if they were up there "too long". The top ropes are a part of the ring.
For as long as I've been watching wrestling, that has been the rule - wrestlers going up top have a standing five count to either perform their move or get down. Pretty much any time you get into the ropes you have a five count to get out of them.
(2) Another is when two people are lying on the mat at the same time and the referee counts to ten before at least one gets up. How often do you see matches end because both competitors fail to get up for this supposed "ten count"?
I've seen it happen a few times before.
There's a FANTASTIC match that invovles the "one participate gets up just as the 10 count is ending" finish: Akira Hokuto vs. Meiko Satomura, GAEA's G-Panic series (4-29-01, aired on TV 5/12/01). This was one of the matches from Akira's final year in wrestling, and it's incredible - easily a MOTYC, better than almost anything the men were doing that year. But enough about joshi.
Here's a rule that I hate, in the WWE, not because I think the rule is stupid, but because they never enforce it - wrestlers have a FIVE COUNT to break an illegal hold. You NEVER see someone go past a 4 count in the WWE. The last time I saw anyone get the 5 count was Rock / Austin II from WM17.
