If the bases are loaded and the batter gets hit by a pitch and gets to take first base forcing in a run, is he crecited with an RBI?

In the American League, if a team has a pitcher who is a really good hitter and they want him to hit can he, or do they have to use the DH?

Yesı

A lil' more about the first Q... basically, if someone scores, including stealing home, or if the batter walks, or as you asked, is hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, or even if he makes an out... pretty much no matter how he scores, the batter is credited with an Run BATTED In

I think the first is no, they would count it as an unearned run. But it depends on the official scorer. The hometown scorekeeper will give the hometown batter the RBI, but I'm pretty sure that normally it would just count as an unearned run.

An unearned run is only awarded when a run scores after an error prevented the third out from occuring.

As answered previously, the pitcher <i>can</i> bat in the American League, but doesn't because that would just be stupid.

So what's the deal with the infield fly rule?

First off, it only is in effect when there is less than two outs and a force situation(A runner on first, or first and second, or first, second and third).

The infield fly rule is to stop fielders from intentionally missing fly balls to turn double plays.

When a ball is caught on the fly, a runner must "tag up", meaning he has to touch the base before running.

Because of this, runners will stay close to their base in a pop fly situation. By letting the ball hit the ground, the runner is now forced to run to the next base, but he is 90 feet away.

Its just a way of making the fielders earn the outs while allowing the runners a chance score

So what's the deal with the infield fly rule?

To avoid flies while enjoying the openess of a field, try to stay away from cowpies.

The real question is why does anyone even pay attention
to the American League while they still have that
atrotious DH rule?

With 2 strikes on a batter he foul tips the ball into the catchcers glove. The catcher must tag him, or throw to first for the out. Why?

If the catcher catches a foul tip with two strikes, the batter is out. He has to tag the batter or throw to first only if he drops the ball.

this is because if there is a passed ball on a third strike, the catcher has comitted an error. The batter is can now attempt to advance to first base.

~~~~~~~~~~
If the catcher catches a foul tip with two strikes, the batter is out. He has to tag the batter or throw to first only if he drops the ball.
And only if he drops the third strike when it's NOT a foul tip. If a foul tip is dropped on the would-be third strike, it's just a foul tip & the batter gets another try.
