Patenting an idea

I forgit what I learned a few years ago about patenting. how and can you patent an idea? For the longest time Ive had a few ideas in my head one about starting my own buisiness the other an invention. There is a website called Ideashappen.com and I posted one idea there, the other Im afraid if I do post it someone will take the credit for it. <P>So after getting my idea on paper what next?

From what I undersand, those type of services will often jerk you around. Many times they dont even search teh patent office records for you, and others, they steal your ideas.

What you need to do is buy a journal and detail your idea/invention, with dates throughout it. Then you cantact a patent lawyer with copies of everything, and then if you can, you make $$$$$$

Just remember there are differences b/w copyrights and patents. Copyrights are applied when material is published (i.e. fixed in a tangible medium). It's always a good idea to register your copyright as well.

Patents are provided for 3 classes of ideas - utility patents, design patents, and plant patents. A patent lets its owner exclude others from making, using, or selling the claimed invention. (It doesn't necessarily confer on the patent holder the right to make the invention but that's a little too deeply legal to get into here.)
