View Full Version : Do You Remember Burger Chef?

I thought of this only because my wife and I were having an argument about the amount of fast food I let our daughter have. My wife noted that when she was a child she never got to eat "happy meals". I told her that this was for the very simple reason that when we were kids, there were no happy meals.
Then I realized I was wrong. At Burger Chef, each kid's meal was accompanied by a cheap plastic toy. I don't remember if the food was any good, but I always wanted to go to Burger Chef for the toys (I also wanted to go to Bob's Big Boy for the crappy Big Boy comic books, but I digress). Burger Chef, I believe, was the father of the happy meal, and years later McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's et. al. followed suit.
I don't even know if they exist any more or even if they were a nationwide chain. I can't remember having seen one since the early 70s. I do remember that the two Burger Chef characters were the Burger Chef himself, and Jeff, who was his son/nephew apprentice or something like that.
Anybody else remember these places?

I never actually went to a burger chef, but we used to have 2 of them in Northern Va. that I remember. (Annandale and Falls Church)
I do remember going to Howard Johnsons, IHOP, and store restaraunts as a kid. When was the last time you had lunch/dinner in a department store that was a real restaruant not a snack bar.
My mother would always eat at Gertz or A & S out on Long Island.
Does anyone remember when Happy Meals started? It must have been the 80's.
Thank you Ron and Fez for finally being live in DC again.
Ok let's get the boys back live in NY. Don't give up the fight.

I looked into it... I can't believe I got through my childhood and youth without the internet.

Since 1979 the Happy Meal has been making kids visits that much more special.

Never even heard of the franchise, but I actually studied a case somewhat involving them the other day in school.

The very last hamburger I ever ate in my life was a
Burger Chef burger. I was five years old. Even though
up until that time, I kind of liked hamburgers, I couldn't
eat more than a couple of bites. Besides the fact that
Burger Chef had the worst food of all the fast food
chains, I had recently seen something, I believe on
PBS, and I think it was called simply "Beef." And was
probably produced by Ralph Nader or someone like him.
The show had an awful effect on me. What it did was
show the entire process of turning cows into
hamburgers. It started with cows out in the field,
chewing their cud with their big, stupid, trusting eyes
staring into the camera. And it showed in alarming
detail the slaughter of the animals and everything that
came after that. At the end I saw the processed beef
patties rolling off the assembly line and then people
eating the stuff.
I tried that one last hamburger, but just couldn't eat it.
I was traumatized by that show. A year later, I gave
up one of my favorite foods EVER, hot dogs. I knew it
was my last one ever, got one from Der
Weinerschnitzel, and enjoyed it knowing I'd never have
another one. And I haven't.
I didn't eat another or morsel of meat (except for
turkey on Thanksgiving) from age 6 until I was a
teenager. It wasn't like I was old enough to have
political convictions about such a thing. It was just
once I knew the connection between a living thing and
the hamburger, I could no longer eat one.
As an adult, I still don't eat much meat, and I finally
figured out a couple of years ago what my deal is. The
more sentient the animal, the more difficult it is for me
to eat it. For instance, I've got no problem eating fish.
They are just a notch above moving plants. It's harder
to eat chicken, but not much. But any kind of mammal,
I just can't do it. I also cant eat anything that I can see
what it looked like while it was alive, like lobster
(though I have no problem with that if it's in a sauce).
Once a year I get a craving for a really good steak. I
don't know why. But I indulge and then feel guilty
afterwards.
I think I am the only person in America that's not a real
vegetarian who hasn't eaten a hamburger since she
was 5 years old.

Se7en,
There was a burger chef in Annandale where Fuddruckers is now and there was a burger chef in Falls Church near 7 corners. I think it was where the McDonalds is on Patrick Henry and Rt 50. I think they closed in the late 70's early 80's.
We need everyone to keep spreading the word about Ron and Fez. Get you friends, coworkers, hell anyone you talk to get them to listen.

Yeah, I remember Burger Chef.
I think Burger King came along to try to rip them off.
I also remember Hardees when behind the counter right there in plain view was a long charcoal grill where they cooked the "Hardee Husky".
Ahhh, those were the days.......

Burger Chef was more predominant in Canada than it was in the US. They lasted at least until the late 70's.
