if you think about it,pearl jam is the only group still around from the "90's grunge era".besides of course for chris cornell and rage(audioslave).they(pj)have changed a lot since "ten" but they are still a great band and will be for a long time.makes you wonder what nirvana, alice in chains,soundgarden,etc...would be like if they were still around.another good example is the chili's.

First of all they aren't the first band we've seen grown up, secondly, they're awful. NEXT!

Hmmm. Band's that Ive seen "grow up."

The Replacements

Paul has had a spotty solo career but defintely came back with some of his best stuff on his last Grampaboy and solo albums (stereo/mono).

Tommy was great in Bash and Pop and good in Perfect and now is the bassist for Guns n Roses....whatever that means.

Slim went on to make some great Keith Richards-esque solo albums.

Chris Mars came out with a couple of good solo albums...and now is a great painter.

Dinosaur Jr.
J did great post Lou work and now has J. Mascis and The Fog, still great. Lou has/had Sebadoh and Folk Implosion.

Heatmiser produced Elliot Smith.

Treepeople produced Built To Spill.

Eric from Archers of Loaf formed Crooked Fingers.

Stephen Malkmus is going strong as a solo artist and with The Jicks.

Uncle Tupelo begat Wilco and Son Volt.

Not really the only one from the "grunge" era.
The fathers of this era are still kicking around.

Mudhoney? (1980's)
The Melvins? (1980's)
Sonic youth? (1980's)

I forgot about Dinosaur Jr even though I came on at the tail end. Fortunately i re-read the initial post where it said "grunge bands" because I had a list a mile long of bands I have seen grow up. Not to mention still being good and still cohesively listenable too. I have not been able to understand a THING Eddie Vedder has sung since Vitology. He needs to remove Jeff Aments old puffy hat from his mouth.

I've followed the Byrds/Buffalo Springfield family tree for almost 40 years
I believe I 've had recordings from 8 different "Chris Hillman bands".
I've been lucky enough to see him with:
The Byrds (the FBB use to do sets together)
Flying Burrito Brothers (but without Gram)
Souther, Hillman and Fury
Manassas
The Chris Hillman Band
The Dessert Rose Band
I heard him on Mountain Stage a couple weeks back, plugging "the new album"

Edit: now I'm really hungry "The Desert Rose Band"
" editing posts since day one"

No one is saying that Pearl Jam is the only band that's around, but they certainly aren't the only band we've watched grow up in the past ten years. Right off the top of my head I can think of Rancid(93), AFI(91), Green Day(90), Bad Religion(80). Maybe they aren't grunge, but at least they're better than Pearl Jam.

How about Aerosmith, they been around since the 70's, the change hasnt necessarily been good though.

I think band should only be under consideration for having "grown up" if it's still in the public eye and remained somewhat intact.

The Cure, for example, has only Robert Smith remaining from the original lineup.

Solo artists maintaining a successful career after the band breaks up doesn't count.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Stones would probably be the two preeminent examples... sure, they've had a couple of member changes, but all-in-all, they're still the same.

Pearl Jam doesn't qualify because their audience has shrunk tremendously. Sure, K-Rock plays the crap out of them, but nothing new.

Heatmiser produced Elliot Smith.probably the only noteworthy thing they did. well, that and being on the zero effect soundtrack.

furly,

guess you weren't expecting to catch so much shit...
:)

ain't it lovely...

i'm an "old old schooler" but i'll just say that Pearl Jam makes some excellent music that I enjoy listening to...

the shame of it is I've seen the bands you mention come and go and many before them...
reminds me that I'm due for some hair coloring...

You forgot about who I think are one of the best bands from the "Seattle Grunge" era. L7 . I think they are an extremely underrated band.
