In the coffee thread, Chairman Kaga said:

I love Dr. Pepper. Waco, Texas in the house.
Aggie I hear in TX you can buy Dr. P in small bottles and
they taste better.

I can't live without Dr. Pepper and thought the
information I am about to provide deserved its own
thread.

From what I understand, the REAL Dr. Pepper formula is
made with real cane sugar instead of corn syrup. And it
is supposed to be much, much better.

From the unofficial Dr. Pepper FAQ:

2.6 How can I get some cane sugar Dr Pepper?

You can either:

a) Visit the plant in Dublin, Texas--the oldest Dr Pepper
bottling plant in the world and the only plant in the U.S.
which is allowed by the Dr Pepper corporation to still
manufacture the soda with cane sugar. The Dublin Dr
Pepper Bottling Company is located at 221 South
Patrick, Dublin, Texas 76446, one block south of the
intersection of US377/67 and TX6. The plant is open
Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm; Saturday,
10am-5pm; and Sunday, 1-5pm. You can also call them
at 1-254-445-3466 for tour information, etc.

b) Visit most stores within a 50 mile radius of the
plant--which is the territory covered by it.

c) Call up Old Doc's Soda Shop in Dublin at
1-888-398-10-2-4, or 1-254-445-3939 and they can tell
you how much it costs to have "The Real Thing"
shipped to you. You can even order it on-line now! Click
on http://www.dublindrpepper.com/Store/entry.htm
and all will be revealed.

Be forewarned that no matter how you buy it from
Dublin, there is a 25 case limit. Any more than that sold
to a single person could violate franchise agreements
(because you could be "dealing" if you have more than
25 cases in your possession and transport them into
another franchise's territory).

d) Visit the Dr Pepper Museum in Waco, Texas, in
person (see question 3.4 for their address), and you
can buy loose bottles and cans of the cane sugar soda
in their gift shop--but not at their soda fountain. The
way they explain it, the museum is not allowed to sell
the soda "to drink" at their fountain with all their other
sodas, but they are allowed to sell it "closed" at their
gift shop, as long as they only sell it in person to
museum customers. I telephoned the museum and
asked: "Does that mean you can't drink it anywhere on
the premises?" "Well, our customers can do whatever
they want after they buy it," the kind woman on the
other end responded. The museum does not ship the
cane sugar product anywhere, which may be why you
never heard of it on their web site.

I've been meaning to order some of the Real Thing for a
while now, and thank you CK for reminding me. I'll give
you an update once I finally taste the stuff.

I saw sonmething on this on the Food Network, I think on Unwrapped.

I remember the cane sugar thing and them saying it's best in TX in little bottles served really really cold, almost freezing. I immediately wanted some. Some people said the best way to drink Dr. Pepper was HOT!

I also mentioned I don't think Red Fusion tastes much different from the regular Dr. Pepper. Anyone disagree? Like, what exactly did they do to it anyway other than try to jump on the Code Red bandwagon?

Code Red is like carbonated Fruit Punch. Pepsi Blue is more original

Mountain is intentionally less carbonated than most other soft drinks. This is one reason I love it so much, it's "easy drinking."

I don't like Code Red as much as the Green, and now they're coming out with another Mt. Dew this summer, "Mountain Dew LiveWire, an orange-flavored version of the popular high-caffeine drink," according to a web site I checked out. I've already seen commercials...

I don't like Pepsi Blue at all. It tastes like a carbonated blue Flavor-Ice to me. I just saw a show in Food Network on Pepsi Blue, its target demographic is teens, so perhaps that's why it's so cloyingly sweet and garishly blue to me.

Used to live off that stuff when I lived right down the street from a Wal-Mart. Not too bad, but Pibb's a much better knock-off.

Of course, it was great. Personally, I like a nice cold Mt. Dew after a DP.

Purchase-based Pepsi-Cola and Atlanta-based Coca-Cola introduced Mountain Dew LiveWire and Sprite Remix, respectively. Mountain Dew LiveWire is an orange-flavored version of the popular high-caffeine drink. Sprite Remix is a tropical version of the country's best-selling lemon-lime soft drink. The companies will begin selling the drinks this spring.

In spring 2001, Pepsi-Cola introduced Mountain Dew Code Red, the first extension of the popular brand since Diet Mountain Dew in 1988. The brand beat Pepsi-Cola's expectations, selling 72 million cases in 2001 and 93.5 million last year, according to Bedford Hills-based Beverage Digest.

Last year, Pepsi-Cola sold just 17 million cases of Pepsi Blue, new in 2002, while Coca-Cola sold 90 million cases of Vanilla Coke, its 2002 introduction.

Pepsi-Cola said it plans to sell Mountain Dew LiveWire from Memorial Day to Labor Day, a rare but not unprecedented move for the second-largest soft drink company.

Where should I begin. Like I said in the coffee thread, Dr. Pepper is the one and only good thing to come out of Waco, TX. I still haven't made it to the museum but I'm definitely going. I'll bring you all back souveniors.

Anyway, I got hooked on the stuff because I used to come to Texas every summer to visit my dad and everyone drank it. I would dread coming home and never being able to find in at restaraunts and such, but it's much easier to find now. I only drink it in cans (or small bottles) because it does get flat quickly but it is hands down the best soda EVER. And I didn't know about that guttersnipe, I'll have to try that very soon.

Do they still make Mr. Pib? Isn't that the same thing as Dr. Pepper?
You could get shot for mixing those two up in Texas. Mr. Pibb used to be an OK knock off but they changed the recipe like Peachy said and I think it tastes horrible now.

Ok. My huge box of Real Dr. Pepper arrived Friday. I
am now drinking my sixth little 8 oz. bottle. When it
first came in and I had gotten a few bottles chilled in he
fridge, I took a swig of regular DP, waited a few
minutes, and then took a swig of Real DP. Here's the
deal.

I feel like a woman who has finally had a lover who has
ruined her for any other man.

When it first rolls onto your tongue, it's not all that
different from the stuff you can buy in the rest of the
world. It's better, but not so much better that you
can't live without the regular kind.

The difference comes in after you swallow it. The
aftertaste. Oh my god, the aftertaste. Regular DP
leaves your mouth quickly, gives your mouth a bit of a
stale taste, and you need another drink soon after.
With this Real DP, with Imperial Cane Sugar instead of
nasty old corn syrup, the aftertaste goes on and on
and gets better by the second, kind of like a multiple
orgasm. My mouth feels like it is bursting with the
essence of cherries and vanilla. It stays with you for
several minutes. And when it finally fades, there is not
a bit of staleness to it. It is heavenly.

I can't afford to buy this stuff often, it was kind of a
belated birthday present to myself. But it will be on my
Christmas wish list from now on every year.

If anyone else decides to try the Real Dr. Pepper,
here's my advice. Get the 8 oz. bottles, even though I
think the larger cans are actually cheaper to ship. The
reason for this is the colder it is, the better, and if
there's less to drink it won't warm up so fast (especially
in those thick green bottles). Plus, I worry that cans
could add a metallic taste to it. I'm thinking of using an
ice bucket to drink the rest of them, to keep them cold
as I sip them.

That's the other thing. Sip, don't gulp. Let the flavor of
the aftertaste ride out its time before you take another
sip. Make it last, revel in it.

I may never drink regular Dr. Pepper again. As I said, I
have been ruined. But this may be a good thing. If I
take that daily Dr. Pepper Big Gulp out of my diet, I'll
lose 10 pounds easy.

Thank you to the fates for not killing me in my horrific
car wreck last Tuesday so that I could have my chance
to taste this magnificent and delightful nectar. Eat,
drink Dr. Pepper, and be merry, for tomorrow we may
die.
