I have a P3 800 comp with 512 MB RAM. Lately, my computer started to drag. This happened mostly when sound was coming, but also when any drop down menu opened. Also, if I tried to open a minimized window, it would take a while (maybe 15 seconds) to open the window. If I restart, the problems go away. But after about a half hour of being on, my comp. starts the same problems again. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do?

It may be time for a new computer.

i am having the same problem although I have a Dell Optiplex GX1.
> 500mh
> 384meg
> Win/98

After bootup it's fine and the time is current, after a couple hours the time begins to fall behind, when i play music it hesitates, and the total response of the pc begins to intermittently stall...

>I formatted my harddrive and put Win/98 back on, but that didn't help.
> I was told to try and go into Setup/CMOS during bootup and on page 2 set the Serial2 port to off, there may be a conflict with the mouse and the modem, but that didn't help and I changed it back to AUTO.
> On the internet I found some tips: They said if you recently installed a new DVD or CDBurner then you need a UDMA/66 cable and most likely you have a UDMA/33.
I went to Comp/USA yesterday and didn't bring the info i printed from the Internet and I asked for an IDE/66 cable, they didn't know what I was talking about. I'm gonna call up before going again to see how a UDMA cable differs from an IDE. The troubleshooting tips said it's the cable that comes with the burner or DVD, i just assumed it was an IDE. The troubleshooting tips state that the wrong UDMA cable can cause a "significant penalty in performance"

troubleshooting PC's is a bit of a pain in the butt... I'll let you know how it goes...

i just went to Yahoo.com and searched UDMA/66:

UDMA66/100 Cables
UDMA-66 and UDMA100 are the newest standard for IDE drives.
Up until now, IDE drives have been limited in their speeds due to noise and crosstalk of the normal 40 pin cables.
The ultra dma has 80 wire conductors and 40 pins.
The extra wires help make the new udma 66 and udma 100 hard drives perform like SCSI drives.
It is used between one udma66/100 controller card and up to two storage devices.
The blue end connects to your controller card or motherboard.
The black end attaches to your master and/or single drive.
The gray connects to a second slave drive.
The distance between the gray and the black is 8".
Please note: some controller cards and Ultra UDMA 66/100 devices cannot recognize a cable that is longer than 18". Please check your manuals.

i'm fumbling my way through it but maybe someone on the board who has better troubleshooting skills and experience will chime in...

jocefus,

thanks for the tips...

when i click My Computer/Properties my Performance says usually between 60-70% free...

With Tazz's case, he has 512meg, I thought that would be a good amount? And I just added 128meg to my 256 but still not enough?

how do you confirm how much of the harddrive is used?

I have run scandisk and defrag and also installed a Norton's Antivirus s/w that has something called CleanSweep which performs something similar to defrag...

Thanks For The Help!

I am running 512 MB RAM, and my computer will not recognize anymore (for a while I had 768, but it only would recognize the 512). I also have a 30 gig HD that is only using 2 gigs.

Funkman, your problem sounds exactly like mine. But I haven't installed anything new to the computer in the last year, and this only started recently. But if you find a solution, let me know :)

Tazz...not even fileshare software or anything like that? I've found that the shitty ad software that usually accompanies them really take a toll on your system resources. After I run ad-aware & clean them out, my performance usually gets back to normal.

you need to free up some system resources. try turning all the stuff off that you don't need you know all the stuff by your clock. that will free up resources and the ad stuff is true. use a program called spybot search & destroy. it works way better then adaware. and who ever said your computer clock is running slow it means you need to replace the battery on the motherboard. it's going dead. if you liv in jersey i'd be happy to help you fix your computers. and give you some cool stuff to.

1) Run AdAware 6 on your computer. You can download it from download.com. Check to see if there are any abberant spyware/adware running on yoru machine.

2) What OS are you using? Make sure you have the latest service packs/patches/updates installed.

3) Defrag your hard drive.

4) Make sure your available disk space is greater than 512 mb. Delete files if you do not have enough room.

5) You have enough RAM. That's fine. The p3 800 is kind of old. You might want to consider upgrading to at least a 1ghz, but I doubt this is the issue causing your problems.

6) Uninstall programs you no longer use or very old programs.

7) If you are somewhat advanced and you have XP or 2000, check your services to see what's running. YOu might have hackware on there without realizing it.

8) Make sure you have the latest versions of your internet browser. Avoid using AOL to browse the net if you are doing so.

That's a good start. Let me know if it helps.

In IE, go to "tools," then "internet options," then "delete files" in the temporary internet files section. You can also erase your history so that your mom doesn't see that you've been visiting porno sites.

i went to download.com but it didn't seem to have the page so i found it at WEBATTACK.com and downloaded it. I ran the scan and it removed 71 objects. will let you know how it goes...

how do you determine if the objects removed were spyware/adware...

Done. Only had one.

What OS are you using? Make sure you have the latest service packs/patches/updates installed.

Windows Me. I bought XP a few months ago, installed it, and it didn't work with my video card. Gateway gave my their XP drivers, that didn't work. Microsoft suggested a new video card, and that didn't work either. So I went back to Me, short 100 bucks.

Defrag your hard drive.

Done.

6) Uninstall programs you no longer use or very old programs.

Done. I am only running minimum programs since I reformatted 2 weeks ago to try to solve this problem.

Make sure you have the latest versions of your internet browser. Avoid using AOL to browse the net if you are doing so.

Done, and I would never use AOL.

Thanks alot Jeff. I'll see if anything changes.

My PC is pretty shitty and I was getting low on free space. My friend (who works with PC's) told me to search my PC and delete *.tmp, *.old, *.prv, *.log, *.wbk files. I deleted most of them (some were highlighted red or blue on XP, so I didn't touch those) and I freed a ton of space.

usually every morning the PC is totally locked up and the clock is 6 to 7 hours behind...
this morning the time was current and I am not experiencing any degrade in performance...

it turns out this didn't fix it, it turned out that when I ran AdAware I stopped a bunch of tasks in my taskbar... the problem came back after the next time i booted...

7) If you are somewhat advanced and you have XP or 2000, check your services to see what's running. YOu might have hackware on there without realizing it.

i have 98se and it turns out I had to enter "msconfig" on the command line and it brought up a screen that had a tab which contained all the tasks that were set to start after reboot, there were at least 15... now all I have is Explorer and systray and I haven't had a problem in a couple weeks now....
