View Full Version : Your First Name
The Chairman

My name does not lend itself to abbreviations, feminizations, nicknames, etc. It's Grant and I like it a lot.
However, as a person with one of those types of names, I've always wondered how people with names like William, Elizabeth, Thomas, Jessica, etc. wind up with their preferred way of calling them.
For instance, I know a William, a Will, a Willie, a Bill, a Billy, and a Billie. Same goes for Richard, Rich, Ritchie, Richie, Ricky, Rich or Elizabeth, Liz, Lizzie, Beth, Liza or Jon, Jonathan or John or Jack.
I'm also an only child, so I'm wondering, does the person decide, more often than not, their chosen name or the parents, or friends or what? At what point does a person named William decide "I'm Will" as opposed to "I'm Bill."
Please enlighten me.

My birth name was one thing and then another ((a story for another time)). My first nickname was Bink, when I was a baby and then my brother started calling me "Shelle" ((like shell)) when I was young and it just kinda stuck better than Bink. For a while I went by a variation of my middle name... Lizzie... which, a few people that I've known since those days still refer to me as.
No wonder I have an identity crisis.
But its my belief that nicknames and the variations of names that people are known by generally are started by other people, and its often too much trouble to change it.

I suppose as a William that goes by Billy that it was the result of conditioning by my parents. When they would discipline me,they would say William, and when they were doting, they would say Billy. Thus, I use Billy as a more "friendlier" projection of myself, rather than a more serious "William".

This is the kind of answer I'm looking for. I'm not talking about "nicknames", but as Shelle said "variations of names."

I have three first name stories. So this is going to be a
long post.
My first name is Heidi. You wouldn't think there's much
you could do with that one. But when I was in college,
some of my sorority sisters (please don't groan too
loudly, I was young, it was the 80s, whadda ya want
from me?) took to calling me Heidi Ho. Cute, huh? Well
then they'd get drunk and just shorten it to Ho. One of
my most embarrassing moments was during a mixer
when the drunk president of our sorority came down
the stairs and shouted at the top of her lungs, "HO!!!"
And all the guys looked over at me. I got a lot of
unwanted attention that night...
Story 2: My father's legal first name on his birth
certificate is Billy. He had some hardass teacher who
insisted on calling him William, until my ornery
Grandmother went down to the school and showed the
teacher his birth certificate and told her she better
damn well call him by his given name. My Grandmother
rocked.
Story 3: My son's name is Alexander. We tried calling
him Alex at first but it just didn't stick. He wouldn't
answer to it. But he would answer to Xander. So
that's what I usually call him. But just yesterday he
told me he decided he wanted to be called Alex, but I
think it's because he's just too lazy to write out his
whole name (he's in Kindergarten). So I've been calling
him Alex and he still won't answer to it. Come to think
of it, he usually ignores me no matter what i call him.
*sigh*

For most of my life, i was Craig, but when I got to college, my closer friends started calling Craiggers, so I guess that name was earned-- a symbol of friendship you might say. These days the two are interchangable, but Craig is usually for family and more distant friends.

I was born a Michael and was called Michael by everone in my family. Growing up, I told everyone my name was Michael, but that name is one that everyone wants to shorten to Mike. Everyone around me except my family called me Mike, and sometime in elementary school I decided I was Mike because everybody called me that anyway. It's been Mike ever since.
My family still calls me Michael, though.

I have a very rare and kind of wacky name. To be honest, I become a little embarrassed when I have to tell people my name cuz it's so strange and out-of-the-norm... It's hard to spell, even harder to say, and let's not even get into first day of classes when the teachers take attendence. But since I'm comfortable with most of the people here, I think I can let everyone know that my name is... John.

Me too, but only because I bore a resemblance to Fred Savage as a child. Yeah . . . great . . . thanks.
My name is Roger, people call me Rog. My father likes to call me Rogeeeeee and he draws out the 'eees' all high and whiny, so that's kind of annoying. I hate it when people refer to me by my full name, especially friends. It seems so formal. So Rog it is.
Edit: By the way, the 'g' is soft like a 'j' not hard. My name doesn't sound like dog. I know to most people that's common sense, but I'm kind of paranoid about it when I spell it out. Say it like you're in India, or on 'What's Happenin' Raaaaaaj

Thom
I adopted it in H.S. because "I liked the way it looked". I pronounce it with a silent "H" ( although when I was working on a film shoot with half a dozen "other Toms", I offered to articulate it to be more identifiable). My mom always called me Tommy, my dad would "change it up a bit", sometimes I was "Blackie" and my brother "Whitey".
When I joined Actors Equity, Thom was my "stage name" and it's that way on everything except my drivers license.
" editing posts since day one"
I have always prefered Jerrold.
I really don't know which I prefer.
Huh?
I've been a "Dave" ever since I moved out. Whenever I go home, or if my girlfriend is in a stern mood, I go back to "David." I never have, nor will I ever, accept "Davey" as a name. It tends to morph into "Davey Crockett" or "Davy Gravy."

I have a friend Harry. It's not short for Harold, Harry is on his birth certificate.
When we were little, I went over his house and we played with his Tonka trucks. We played this game where we were on the floor and just slid the trucks to each other really hard. Our heads were really close to the floor, and I slid one really hard and he missed catching it and it hit him in the head. Went straight into his nose.
Harry got up and was dazed. Then his nose was bleeding. We looked on the floor and there was this thing next to the truck that looked like a candy corn. Looked exactly like a candy corn. So we told his mother and she picked it up and put us in the car and rushed us to the doctor.
I had knocked his septum out and it had to be stitched back in.
In any case, septums look like candy corn and Harry was Harry and not Harold and sometimes people teased him and called him Harry The Dirty Dog cause there is a children's book called that.

I don't care if I'm called Arelis or Silera. Sometimes I'll say my name is Lisa.
I'd respond to anything really. My favorite would be Wouldyoulikeadrink.

Apparently The Chairman's favorite variation when he's drunk is Solaris. Sorry.

my name is Vincent and I always get the creeps whenever another guy calls me Vinnie ("ie" not "y", by the way), it just sounds kinda fruity. Additionally, I hate when anyone calls me "Vince", it sounds so sleazy! I also have a nickname from High School that stuck, vin detz (pronounced "deetz") and everyone thought my last name was actually "detz" and not the laborious italian name I actually have to write everyday-Thanks DAD!
Vin D. (the "D" is for "Do it for Johnny!")

My name is Petrina. Most people don't get it right and call me Katrina, Patricia, Bettina. I usually only correct people if I feel it's worth my time and effort to do so.
When I was a kid, my best friend down the street called me Trina. I kinda liked that although he seems to have been the only one to ever call me that. My mom and dad called me Petrushka. Eh, it's just a Russian thing.

I'm a big wheel down at the cracker factory.
I hate my first name so I choose to go by A.J.
It's a nickname I've had since I was born. Since I was named after my father (as well as my grandfather and great-grandfather) this was also a way to tell us apart.

my name's Margaret. As a kid, everyone used to call me Margie and that was ok. then, when i started to get into high school, i used my given name because i don't know many people with my name and it was different. my best friend would call me Parker though. Through college, i went from being called Marty to what I go by now- Maggie. I only get called Margaret now by people at work and family members when they're being serious.
don't anyone EVER call me Peggy or Peg or any form of that name. i hate it and will ignore you only after i've brought it to your attention that i can't stand it.

... look what i just done said ...
My first name is Gwenyth, but I choose to go by Gwen, Gwenny, Gwenny Bear, Gweenie or Gwreen depending on who I'm talking to.
Most people are too lazy to say the whole name Gwenyth aloud, so I don't mind the nickname. I H A T E it however, when people are stupid and assume my name is Gwendolyn, I cringe even thinking of that name. Ew!
And stupid people on the phone at work think my name is Glenna (GAG!) or Wendy. Get a fuckin' hearing aid.
