I love Curly. EVERYBODY loves Curly. It's fact.
But: Shemp did have his moments. Agree?

Absolutely! I think Shemp is underrated -- his stuff is as good as Curly's.
And the ones with Shemp seem to be a lot more violent. One of the best Shemp episodes was the one where he was the Vocal Coach. His reactions when that lady with the lousy voice was singing are hysterical.

I was always loyal to the Marx. Brothers. The Stooges were very funny also. I think Shemp had his moments, but Curly was a lot funnier.

Please, comparing the Marx Brothers to the Stooges is like comparing the Beatles to the Monkees. Sort of similar in structure and form, both have their moments, but one is CLEARLY heads and shoulders above the other. The Marx bros. were just as good at the physical stuff as the Stooges, and were so much more verbal and clever.
That said, the Stooges are classic, and are great. But as for Curly being overrated, I say no way. But at the same time, I'm not on the Shemp is bad bandwagon, but I think Curly is the best third stooge. I would only say he's overrated compared to Larry. Larry Fine never got the props he deserved in my book(there was never a Larry-Shuffle) but he was great, wise-ass glue holding the unit together and always a wildcard. I thought he was senstation.

LEGALIZE SHEMP
How do you pick a favorite Stooge? I know who the WORST was but surely not the best.
*Moe: the leader of the group who has great lines, timing, and he's always angry and takes it out on the Boys
*Curly: comic genius, the fat guy who could dance
*Shemp: lovable, really took a smack well and looked funny doing it. Great dance/boxing moves.
*Larry: If you have Stooge tapes, watch an episode and ONLY watch Larry in the background. You will see what I mean when I say his reactions and facial expressions are comic genius. Great voice too.
*Joe DeRita: Did a good job being "Curly" but had HUGE shoes to fill.
*Joe Besser: One or two good moments. He was better as Stinky.
*Emil Sitka: Real funny backup."Hold hands you lovebirds"
And the Marx brothers are great but don't hold a candle to the Stooges. People need to buy more Stooge tapes and they would understand...

Curly is not overrated. Moe, Larry, and Curly were the best stooges. Shemp who was good, but not as good as his brother Curly.
I will turn off any other 3 stooges short or movie. There is nothing funny about any of those shorts.
Thank you Ron and Fez for finally being live in DC again.
Ok let's get the boys back live in NY. Don't give up the fight.
Yeah, Curly is overrated. Moe is too. Larry and Shemp never get enough respect.

Shemp is like sushi--an aquired taste.
Curly is a bag of suga--people are born loving him
Dont get me wrong. I've grown to love shemp, but he is still just the step father. Curly is the biological father and nothing can be better than that.
Enough metaphors?

I do NOT think Curly was overrated at all. I am really torn between him and Shemp. I thought they both had their strong moments and acted accordingly. Larry was always my favorite. I was NEVER a big fan of the Joe, Curly Joe and I think there might have been another one not sure. I thought they whined too much.
I remember reading this one Stooges book that stated that Shemp was actually first before Curly in the Vaudeville days but then something happened and Curly came along. How ironic was it how Shemp filled in then later after Curly had a stroke. Might explain the excellent chemistry due to them being together before.
The story of how Shemp died was really sad as well. He was apparently in the ar with Moe and they were just simply driving along and Moe turned to Shemp ( I believe there was a burning odor due to a cigar) and Shemp's head was bowed to his chest and he was smoking at the time. He had died of a heartattack. I remember reading that and getting all teary.
As a a matter of fact I believe when I first saw the Stooges when I was a kid I saw Shemp first and THEN Curly and got all upset with Shemp for some reason. I don't know why but I did. Then again at that age, I thought EVERYONE in black and white pictures were dead. It would realy screw me up when I would see my 1981 Baseball prospects cards with the b & w pictures and I would be like, "Daddy, he just played last night...........is he dead?" I had a strange childhood.

Curly got the recognition he deserved although 'The Curly Shuffle' was pretty heinous and no fault of his.
Moe got the recognition that he deserved as well.
Larry was extremely underrated.
Shemp sucks. Shemp comes on, TV goes off.

Curly was not overrated.
Shemp was not as funny as Curly, but it's a damned shame he had to follow Curly, cuz Shemp was very good.
Shemp had the best 'spit take' of them all, including Curly.

I agree. Larry was the true definition of a "stooge". He was always in the background doing something and when Curly would do something stupid, Larry would get slapped too.
