Man, this stuff tastes like shit!!!
Maybe my dad just has the garbage, but this stuff really tastes like kerosene.

Growing up half Italian, I was exposed to this at an early age. When I was younger I always thought it tasted like gas. It is definitely an acquired taste. But just like my dad's gorgonzola cheese, bacala, or Campari, I grew to like it.
One thing...you need top quality grappa. I've had exceptional grappa that rivals a very good cognac.
In case you didn't know, grappa is a distilled spirit made from the leftover pits and stems after wine making.

It's pretty cheap stuff.
It was like $20 a bottle. I got it for him for Christmas instead of the $55 a bottle stuff right next to it, which I couldn't afford.

Grappa is definitely one thing where you get what you pay for. It's not so much the ingredients (pits and stems and skins) as in the distillation process. Just like there's a huge difference among vodkas, which are by law just unflavored and diluted ethyl alcohol, it's all in the distillation process and how it's treated afterwards. But again an acquired taste. People who don't like scotch aren't going to love a $100 scotch right off the bat, but it damn well tastes better than Brand X. And Grey Goose vodka is going to give you less of a hangover than Kappy's brand...
