"What's your opinion? We'd like to know." I remember watching these editorials as a child before cartoons or Batman or whatever.

To a kid that just wanted to watch some Popeye, it was mind-numbing, but I liked watching anyway. It felt like the grown ups were including me in something important.

Unfortunately, I had no opinion to offer because I had no idea what the man was talking about.

Mr. Corleone is Johnny's Godfather. To the Italian people, that is a very religious, sacred, close relationship.

I'm STILL searching for the "Children's Aid Society" theme that used to run on WPIX during those very same years. Where can I get it ?

His name was Robert Hughes. He was Senior VP of something. He always interrupted the Magilla Gorilla Hour - a "Screen Gems Production."

I distinctly remember these, and how about those tests of the "Emergency Broadcast System." I never quite understood those.

What about the commercial on WPIX for the "Ritz Thrift Shop"..."some women lunch at The Plaza, ski at St. Moritz and buy expensive furs every year...others just look that way."

And what about that really old guy who sold the classical music appreciation records? He looked like 90 and with that affected English accent he would say things like "some people know this as the theme song to Romeo and Juliet, but did you also know it was the Polovetzian Daaaaance Number Twooooo by Borodin."

And what about the daytime game where the kids called and played the cheesy video game where you shot the spaceship in the target and the "gun" shot when you said "pix." And all you got was this kid saying "pix pix pix pix pix pix pix pix pix pix....over and over again and it seemed the shots were never in synch....

The winner of that game is probably firing Tomahawk Cruise missiles right now.....

True Story:

3 years ago while in college I was singing it out loud in the dormitory halls when another student came up to me in amazement. We shared stories and he is now one of my closest friends today.

There was nothing freakier than coming home from a binge and watching "Family Affair" on Channel 11 at 5am, followed by Mr. Hughes and his editorials. Well, maybe "Christoper Closeup" on Channel 5!

That Childrens Aid Society had the most androgynous person singing in it.

Was it a chick or a white guy with an afro?

Does anyone remember the cheesy fireworks when WPIX went to and came back from commercials or when they had those contests after school?

PRAY FOR THE BRAVE ONES!!!!

Sounds familiar. I remember the TV Guide always said that "To Be Announced" was on at like 6:00 in the morning.

So whatever was on, I actually thought I was watching a program called To Be Announced.

Speaking of channel 11 commercials, how about...

HEY JERRY, WHAT'S THE STORY? If you woik for the city, state or federal government or are a member of any union at all, I can get it for you wholesale. AW, C'MON JERRY, WHAT'S THE STORY? The story is you come to JGE and show you're union or civil service card at the door and yer in. Cause JGE is not open to the general public, only to union members and their families. SO THAT'S THE STORY, JERRY? That's the storrryyy!
