There are some real good steakhouses in the NYC Area. Ive been to the old homestead, Peter Lugers, and Smith and Wollenskys. All 3 were excellent but Smith and Wollenskys is the best in my opinion. All 3 put a dent in your wallet but i gotta go with S & W.

Ruths Chris is very good for a franchise steakhouse followed by Boulder Creek

Kinda makes you think when the #1 rapper is white and the #1 golfer is black

The one in Smithtown blows the doors off the one in Rocky Point. Easy on the wallet which is nice also.

I've been to Smith and Wollenskys once its a great place, but out in bumbfuck NJ where I live there is a place called the Homested. The inside is cheesey as hell, old farm tools on the walls, and pictures of Will Rogers but the food is unbeliveable.

Can somebody give me some more info on Morton's? I've been wanting to go there for a few years now but I've never had the chance to actually get there. How are the steaks, what's the price range, are they good cuts, etc.?

Ruth's Chris. Where else can you get steak cooked in butter, creamed spinach au gratin and killer potatos. I favor the one in Garden City.

There is an EXCELLENT Steak and Seafood place right here in West Milford, NJ.

The Town Tavern!

I LOVE to go there and get the King cut Prime Rib. It's like 25 ounces of the best Prime Rib I've ever tasted!

Be warned! My mother says the place is a DIVE and refuses to eat there anymore, but Death Metal Moe says:

THIS PLACE DESTROYS!!!

Sizzler...

Seriously... I think it depends a lot on both the type of steak you like and the overall atmosphere you want.

I like NY Strip, medium rare.

My overall favorite, Sparks. Great steak (wet aged, interestingly), atmosphere, mystique, and phenomenal wine list.

I LOVE The Palm. Great steak and huge lobsters. But they try to do too much and have too much Italian stuff on the menu. But for steak or lobster and the caricatures on the wall - it's the bomb.

Peter Luger is no question the place for overall sawdust on the floor, surly waiters, and porterhouse. Creamed spinach. Hash Browns. Ice Cream with Schlagg? (whipped cream). I've been to the Brooklyn one and the Long Island one and they say they both have the exact same steaks but Brooklyn is best.

Smith&Wollinsky's is new school. Good steak but not 1st tier in my book.

Old Homestead is great. To me Kobe Beef is overrated and so is that burger...but the beef is top rate.

I like Ruth's Chris. Don't like Morton's too much, hate the gimmick where they bring around the raw meat platter and show it to you when explaining the menu. But the drinks at Morton's are HUGE so that's a plus.

Angelo and Maxie's is a good spot, but if I go there, the thing I get on the menu is the crispy pork shank. Get it. It's almost as good as Vienna.

Another great place for steak and potatoes is Ben Benson's.

OK, recipe for the perfect meal:

Go to the original Palm on Second Avenue or Sparks.

Order a scotch neat.
Order lump crab meat cocktail and shrimp cocktail.
Order a sirloin medium rare.
Order hash browned potatoes and creamed spinach.
Order a bottle of Cakebread Cabernet '97 or Stag's Leap Cab '97.
Enjoy.

My favorite place that is local to me is The Elm Park Inn on Morningstar Rd, Staten Island. Just over the Bayonne bridge.

They can be somewhat pricey, but worth it. I usually get 2 meals out of whatever i get because the portions are so huge, and their steaks and ribs are cooked to perfection. They serve all the sides "family style" so there is enough for everyone at the table.

And while it's not a steakhouse, In Jersey, there is only one place for Italian food: Rivoli's in Toms River. The portions are almost rediculously big, and everything is made fresh. The place has a great quaint atmosphere, and it all run by the Rivoli Family.

If you are down the shore near Seaside, it's located right before the bridge into Seaside off Rt 37 on Fischer Blvd.

On the franchise side, it's a toss up between Outback and Boulder Creek, because in my opinion, they are basically the same right down to the Bloomin' Onion.

Morton's is my favorite by far, I suggest the "Fez Whatley Special 48 oz. Porter House". It is very pricey though, 20 bucks and up for just the steak, vegetables and potatoes cost extra.

For the DC folks...
I had a bachelor party a couple of weeks ago that started at Crystal City Restaurant. Its a low-rent strip club that is "famous" for its 7 dollar prime rib. Now that's a meal!

Globe and Laurel outside Quantico Marine Corps Base, on Rt. 1.
Be ready to toast "Chesty" sometime during the evening, and to sing the Marine Corps hymn as well at some point.
You gots to get the onion soup and the filet mignon.

Morton's is good (but pricey). I went there in North Carolina about 6 months ago. It's great if you're out for a special night, but for your average night, I'll go to some of the non-chain restaurants around here. The Four Winds in Manasquan makes very good steaks, and The Ark in Point Pleasant is OK.

There's a fantastic place I go to out in Indianapolis twice a year, called The Coach and Horses. If you're ever in that area, look it up. They cut your meat to order and you can practically cut their prime rib with a fork. It's also very reasonably priced.

I've always wanted to try Ruths Chris.

It is very pricey though, 20 bucks and up for just the steak, vegetables and potatoes cost extra.

1. Since when is $20 for a steak pricey? A steak at Howard Johnson's is going to run you nearly that much.

2. No decent steakhouse that I have ever been to includes vegetables and potatoes in the price of the steak. And I've been to a lot of steak houses.

3. Steaks at Mortons (and all the other good steakhouses in the city) cost substantially more than $20.

I agree, however, that Mortons is a decent steakhouse :)

Yeah a prime steak in NYC is going to run you about $36.

Regarding Morton's, its a chain (but so is Ruth's Chris.) Morton's gimmick is when the server comes over, they roll a cart to the table and go over the menu by showing you the uncooked food. They show you the filet, the sirloin, the porterhouse, etc, all wrapped in plastic wrap, but raw. They show you a raw potato, raw veggies, etc. And the servers do it all day and even though they get paid well it's obvious that they are tortured to go through the schtick over and over.

In addition, a word of warning about Morton's. They tend to undercook, or perhaps cook the steak correctly, but in a way that can surprise people not used to the right way to cook steaks. You should really order great, prime beef medium rare. But medium rare is bloody with a coldish-warm center. For acolytes to Morton's, it's best to order a step up.
