Infinity To Stream On AOL After All

Infinity representatives last week denied reports that a change to the company's long-standing policy against Internet streaming of its over-the-air programming was imminent, but AOL announced yesterday that some Infinity programming will indeed be streamed as part of the AOL Radio Network. AOL provided no details, but said "select Infinity stations" will join its Internet-radio lineup as part of a partnership between Infinity and AOL to promote AOL for Broadband service. The huge campaign for the broadband service will involve 183 Infinity stations nationwide, as well as a TV campaign and a 50-city marketing tour this summer.

I think the jury is still out if Infinity will allow streaming. They have always been against that practice. We can only hope that Ron and Fez will be available on streaming on AOL. That will be a start to getting the boys heard back in NY. Hopefully on one of Infinity's stations.

One point we talked about last night was the revenue from commercials. If Infinity and AOL were smart they would sell national spots during the comercial breaks, they could also sell advertisers space on the stations websites. There is always a way to make money.

Thank you Ron and Fez for finally being live in DC again.
Ok let's get the boys back live in NY. Don't give up the fight.

I've heard commercials on 1010WINS, but I think it's just an ad for other stations on AOL Braudband, because I dont think they need to have streaming news over the net.

From FMQB.com:

While Infinity hasn't disclosed which stations will be streamed, a spokesman said the company is readying a more detailed announcement about its new arrangement with AOL for later this week or early next week.

From DCRTV:

Streaming For Infinity, Sort Of - 4/1 - It now sounds as though Infinity may allow the internet streaming of a handful of its hundreds of radio stations in a deal with Dulles-based America Online. Infinity has long prohibited the streaming of its stations. However, last week some trade pubs reported that a new "Radio@AOL" service offered by AOL Broadband may soon feature live audio for Infinity's stations. Locally, Infinity hot talkers WJFK-FM and WXYV have been running promos teasing the arrival at its studios and offices of the AOL broadcast service. Infinity also owns WPGC-FM, WQSR, WHFS, WLIF, WWMX, and WARW. Then, on Monday, we heard that the Infinity-AOL deal won't feature the internet relay of any station. But then again, on Tuesday, press releases from both sides say that "at least five nationally-known" Infinity stations will be available via the AOL service. Stay tuned.....

funny - clearchannel just stopped :
We apologize that Q1043.com is no longer streaming over the Internet. Recently streaming music recordings over the Web has become much more expensive then it once was. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and others lobbied for and received changes in Federal law. These new regulations require stations like ours to pay each time we play a song on the Internet, and to report very cumbersome and extensive information. Unfortunately it has become too expensive for us to continue.

If and when the environment or the law that allowed these burdensome rules and regulations changes and we can economically provide our content to you again over the Internet, rest assured we'll be back!

so how is it that they can enforce such rules about tracking for internet broadcasting, but not FM radio? If they enforce the rule for radio as well, then it's no additional overhead, so that can't be true.

Anyone? Anyone?

Clear Channel is in a pissing match about the royalties the RIAA wants (which by contract are 3 times greater for Internet broadcasts).

I say pissing match, because organizations such as streamaudio.com already have software in place to broadcast the stream minus the RIAA ads.

I imagine AOL is going to have something like this in place which will allow Infinity around the ludicrous RIAA contract.

hahaha, Q104.3 made a spelling error on their official website.
Also, that's fucking HORRIBLE that Q stopped streaming, cuz for me, that means no more Eddie Trunk till May, when I get back from school. Why God? Why must all good radio be taken away from me?

this sucks - I hear that a lot of stations pulled internet broadcasting on April 1 because of this. Am I the only one who sees that internet rebroadcasting of your radio show is more like radio and less like napster filesharing? this is what happens when we allow people who dont understand technology draw up laws that involve technology. What next, pay per play for all radio and tv? Mark my words, it can happen.

I agree. I look at it as using my computer as a radio. Plus, stations would increase their broadcast range and audience.

I listen to WPLR from CT on the Internet. What they do is dump out when they play commercials. There are quite a lot of stations you can listen to here:

But why dump out when the commercials are played? It's harder to "change stations" when listening on the web, so I'd think people are MORE likely to stick it out through the commercials...or why not sell add time EXCLUSIVELY for the webcasts? Then you're selling advertising TWICE for the same show!

The two sides agreed Thursday on how much big webcasters like Yahoo!, America Online, Microsoft and RealNetworks must pay to broadcast songs over the Internet during 2003 and 2004.

The new deal, if approved by the U.S. Copyright Office, will allow the two industries to avoid a lengthy arbitration process to set the royalty rates.
