As far as I know...it's a reference from Pink Floyd's Animals album. Sheep is a song about blind, bewildered followers. Dogs refers to cut throat humans in business and government. Pigs refers to people who use censorship to pursue goals and agendas.
I think a "sheep" is the opposite of a "wolf".
A "sheep" would be peaceful, docile, easily lead.
A "wolf" would be agressive, independent, dangerous.

A sheep follows it's shepard to the slaughter
it doesn't question, it never asks "why"
it just does what its told, no matter what...
you know how the bible says things like, "The Lord is My Shepard?"
well, there you go.
Anyone who blindly follows, listens to, trusts anyone in power, or just follows anyone who's simply "louder" than he is, is a sheep.

As much as I love Floyd, i will never give them credit for this. look to George Orwell's "Animal Farm" (actually fiveb, read it, it will be your new favorite book. :) )
Sheep are docile, weakwilled animals easily led by a shepherd. Therefore, the metaphor is that a "sheep" is that type of person, blindly following a leader.

Sheep travel in a flock, they wander around together but none of them are really leading they're all just following the group. So I guess being a "sheep" would mean that you just follow what most people are doing because, well, most people are doing it and you're not taking the time to form your own opinion or use your "critical thinking" skills.

I think "sheep" is the opposite of "wolf."
I would think sheep would be more the opposite of a shark because one's on land and the other in the sea. Or maybe a teradactyl because one is on land and modern and the other in the sky and ancient.
By the way, do sheep have eyes? 'Cause you can never see their eyes. Has anyone else noticed that?...............teradactyls have eyes.

Of course I've read Animal Farm, man. It is a classic book. I mentioned Floyd cause I think in more generic terms or widely known to the average person, they'd recognize or refer to a cd, lyric or music more so then a book or quote. Just simple association I guess.

Probably, because he/she is just following the herd- so to speak.

"Sheep" is plural.
If it's just one of them, you've got a "shoop".
" and they ask me why I drink"

You're not stating that Pink Floyd actually coined the phrase, are you? Calling someone a "sheep" is saying that they're timid, weak, or submissive. The term has probably been in use since the invention of herding animals.

The term has probably been in use since the invention of herding animalsi agree, this phrase certainly didn't originate from pink floyd. as many have mentioned before me, it is derived simply from the the manner in which sheep follow their shepherd with their herd.

Of course I realize Pink Floyd didn't create that term. I think they put it into a context where the masses could easily associate and understand it. Kinda like making it popular.

It goes back at least century.
The bible refers to the believers as sheep and god as the shephard.
It's also commonly used to refer to people who attend religious services (also called a flock) and the leader as a shephard, guiding them towards enlightment, or anal pain, whatever the case may be.

It was already a phrase well-known and used by virtually everybody millennia before Pink Floyd or any other crappy band used it in a song. Pink Floyd didn't help popularize the phrase in any way whatsoever.
