This has got to be the saddest day of my life
I called you here today for a bit of bad news
I won't be able to see you anymore
Because of my obligations, and the ties that you have
We've been meeting here everyday
And since this is our last day together
I wanna hold you just one more time
When you turn and walk away, don't look back
I wanna remember you just like this
Lets just kiss, and say goodbye

I had to meet you here today
There's just so many things to say
Please don't stop me 'til I'm through
This is something I hate to do
We've been meeting here so long
I guess what we done, oh was wrong
Please darlin', don't you cry
Let's just kiss and say goodbye (Goodbye)

Many months have passed us by
(I'm gonna miss you)
I'm gonna miss you, I can't lie
(I'm gonna miss you)
I've got ties, and so do you
I just think this is the thing to do
Maybe you'll meet, you'll meet another guy
Understand me, won't you try, try, try, try, try, try, try
Let's just kiss and say goodbye (Goodbye)

I'm gonna miss you, I can't lie, (I'm gonna miss you)
Understand me, won't you try, (I'm gonna miss you)
It's gonna hurt me, I can't lie, (I'm gonna miss you)
Take my hankerchief, wipe your eyes, (I'm gonna miss you)
Maybe you'll find, you'll find another guy, (I'm gonna miss you)
Let's kiss and say goodbye, pretty baby, (I'm gonna miss you)
Please, don't you cry, (I'm gonna miss you)
Understand me, won't you try, (I'm gonna miss you)
Let's just kiss
And say goodbye

That previous song was the Manhattans "Let's Just Kiss and Say Goobye". Here's another gem:

Have You Seen Her
The Chi-Lites

(Eugene Record - Barbara Acklin)

(spoken):

One month ago today
I was happy as a lark
But now I go for walks
To the movies - maybe to the park

And have a seat on the same old bench
To watch the children play (huh)
You know, tomorrow is their future
But to me, just another day

They all gather around me
They seem to know my name
We laugh, tell a few jokes
But it still doesn't ease my pain

I know I can't hide from a memory
'Though day after day I've tried
I keep sayin' she'll be back
But today again I lied

Verse 1:
Oh, I see her face everywhere I go
On the street, and even at the picture show
Have you seen her?
Tell me, have you seen her?

Verse 2:
Oh, I hear her voice as the cold winds blow
In the sweet music on my radio
Have you seen her?
Tell me, have you seen her?

Why, oh, why
Did she have to leave and go away [2: oh, yeah]

Oh-oh-oh, I've been used to havin' someone to lean on
And I'm lost
Baby, I'm lost (Oh)

Verse 3:
Oh, she left her kiss upon my lips
But left that break within my heart
Have you seen her?
Tell me, have you seen her?

Verse 4:
Oh, I see her hand reaching out to me
Only she can set me free
Have you seen her?
Tell me, have you seen her?

(spoken over 2nd and 3rd repeats):

As another day comes to an end
I'm lookin' for a letter or somethin'
Anything that she would send
With all the people I know
I'm still a lonely man
You know, it's funny
I thought I had her in the palm of my hand

[repeat to fade]:

Have you seen her
Tell me, have you seen her (tell me, have you seen her?)

I'm done.

another great one is "If You Don't Know Me By Now"

a group called Simply Red did a nice cover of it...

if you don't know me by now
you will never never never know me

all the things that we've been through
you should understand me like i understand you
now girl i know the difference between right and wrong
i ain't gonna do nothing to break up your happy home
don't get so excited when i come home a little late at night
'cos we only act like children when we argue fuss and fight

if you don't know me by now
you will never never never know me
we've all got our funny moods
i've got mine woman you've got yours too
just trust in me like i trust in you
as long as we've been together it should be so easy to do
just get yourself together or we might as well say goodbye
what good is a love affair when you can't see eye to eye

if you don't know me by now
you will never never never know me

I always get mixed up between The Spinners and The Stylistics too...

Ok, so your heart is broken
You're sitting around mopin', mopin', mopin', cryin', cryin'
You say you even think about dying
Well, before you do anything rash, dig this...

Everybody plays the fool, sometime
There's no exception to the rule, listen baby
It may be factual, it may be cruel, I ain't lying
Everybody plays the fool

Fallin' in love is such an easy thing to do
But there's no guarantee that the one you love, is gonna love you
Oh, loving eyes they cannot see a certain person could never be
Love runs deeper than any ocean, it clouds your mind with emotion

Everybody plays the fool, sometime
There's no exception to the rule, listen baby
It may be factual, it may be cruel, I ain't lying
Everybody plays the fool

How can you help it, when the music starts to play
And your ability to reason, is swept away
Oh, heaven on earth is all you see, you're out of touch with reality
And now you cry, but when you do, next time around someone cries for you

Hey, everybody plays the fool, sometime
Use your heart just like a tool, listen baby
They never tell you so in school, I wanna say it again,
Everybody plays the fool

Everybody plays the fool, sometime
There's no exception to the rule, listen baby
It may be factual, it may be cruel, I ain't lying
Everybody plays the fool

Every plays the fool, sometime
There's no exception to the rule, listen baby
It may be factual, it may be cruel, I wanna say it again
Everybody plays the fool

I only ever hear these songs when I break up with a woman, then that's all that's on the radio.
There I am, all crushed and miserable and I turn on the radio and hear "Have You Seen Her?". Another one I only hear at those times is "When A Man Loves A Woman".

" and they ask me why I drink"

Song: How Could I Let You Get Away ~~ 1972 Artist: Spinners
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Like Howdy Doo
Your tin soldiers, your clowns too
They're all laughing at you
I'm laughing at you too

Like basketball
5 fouls and that was all
The games you really knew, yeah
Why couldn't I beat you

In the middle of the room
Got no time to count my sheep today
How could I let you get away
When I knew I'd need somebody soon (Hoo...hoo...)
How could I let you get away
When I knew I'd need somebody soon

Like Mother Goose
Winds you up then turns you loose
Block 10 was beatin' 2
And I can't tell green from blue, no, no

Like cat and mouse
Games of chase instead of house
I get so mad at you
Like parents often do

In the middle of the room
Got no time to count my sheep today (Baby)
How could I let you get away
When I knew I'd need somebody soon (Hoo...hoo...)
How could I let you get away (Baby)
When I knew I'd need somebody soon

Ooh...baby
How could I let you get away, baby
When I knew I'd need somebody soon, yeah
Hey, baby
I didn't count my sheep, I let my woman weep, baby
I knew down inside I'd need somebody soon
Like Mother Goose I done let you loose
And need you, baby, yeah
Ooh-wee, I need somebody soon
Help me now, keep my feet on the ground
My baby

the NAZZ...

Hello, it's me
I've thought about us for a long, long time
Maybe I think too much but something's wrong
There's something here that doesn't last too long
Maybe I shouldn't think of you as mine

Seeing you
Or seeing anything as much as I do you
I take for granted that you're always there
I take for granted that you just don't care
Sometimes I can't help seeing all the way through

It's important to me that you know you are free
'Cause I never want to make you change for me

Think of me
You know that I'd be with you if I could
I'll come around to see you once in a while
Or if I ever need a reason to smile
And spend the night if you think I should

Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...

[Refrain]:
That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.

[Refrain]

The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
so this is all I have to say.

[Refrain]

The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger, watch it grin, but...

[Refrain]

A brave man once requested me
to answer questions that are key
"is it to be or not to be"
and I replied "oh why ask me?"

'Cause suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
...and you can do the same thing if you choose.

Anyone remember Todd Rundgren on Don Kirschner in that dopey flesh toned body stocking with the silver vine on the front?

OLD SCHOOL GREAT SONG?
I got your old school great song--
I used to visit all the very gay places,
Those come what may places,
Where one relaxes on the axis of the wheel of life
To get the thrill of life
From jazz and cocktails.
The girls I knew had sad and sullen gray faces,
with distingue' traces
That used to be there
You could see where
They'd been washed away
By too many through the day
12 o'clock tails.
Then you came along with your siren song
To tempt me to madness.
I thought for a while
that with your poignant smile
Was tinged with the sadness
Of a great love for me.
Ah, yes I was wrong,
Again, I was wrong!
Life is lonely again,
And only last year
Everything seemed so sure.
Now life is awful again,
A troughfull of hearts could only be a bore.
A weekend in Paris will ease the bite of it.
All I care is to smile in spite of it.
I'll forget you, I will,
While yet you are still
Burning inside my brain.
Romance is mush, stifling those who strive.
I'll live a lush life in some small dive,
And there I'll be, while I rot with the rest
Of those whose lives are lonely too
-----"Lush Life"-----by Mr. Billy "Swee' Pea" Strayhorn.
