View Full Version : Things Older People Ate
The Chairman

OK there are certain things I remember as a kid that older people ate that were weird to me at the time.
My dad always ate these dried figs on a string that were a straw color and tasted pretty nasty to me.
My grandfather put evaporated milk in his coffee and ate pigs knuckles.
My grandmother always had Charms Sour Balls within reach and during holidays those bad hard spice candies that stuck together and no one ate and then developed a film on them and were even worse. She also liked those jelly candies that were shaped like slices of citrus fruit and covered with sugar. And she had these really little licorice candies that were individually wrapped and the size of an aspirin and came in like a black, white and red wrapper. I forget the name but they were pretty good if you liked licorice.
My friend Albert's dad ate pickled eggs.
any other old school old people food memories?

My Norwegian Grandparents ate "Lutefisk" which was fish prepared by mixing with lye and then burying it. When I was a kid I wished I was Polish.
Thank God all of my Grandparents were eventually on heavy meds. A concert was never complete unless I stopped by Grandma's house and stole handfuls of pills.
What was Granny doing with Quaaludes?????

My grandparents had nips. Most times they were in the coffee variety and would sometimes have chocolate in the middle of them. There was always a full bowl of Nips on the living room table.
My Dad got potato chips delivered from Charles Chips and my Grandparents got potato chips AND pretzels from Good's. Good shit. Also my Grandparents always had a box of Bugle's in the cupboard.
There was also this and STILL is this abortion of a salad I think is called pickled hash. The shit is disgusting but the folks live by it.
And yes, the hot pink pickled eggs also sat in a jar at our dinner table many a time.

Back in the day many people got soda delivery to their homes. Companies like Cott, White Rock and Hammer would drop off cases to homes. Not at my house, but it seemed that all of my friends Grandparents had stockpiles of crappy soda.

Not sure how weird this was/is, but my dad used to eat Sardines right out of the can for a football/tv snack. I have yet to run into anyone else who does, so I include this in our discussion.

I remember nips, they were weird. The candy, not the people.

My grandpa ate pickled herring, pickled peppers, and the ever present gefilte fish. His taste for the first two rubbed off on me, but I can't stand gefilte fish.

Scrapple is very tasty. My Italian grandfather used to eat anchovies, sardines, pretty much anything off a pig, and goat's head. I must admit that pig's feet and the goats head really isn't that bad, if you ever eat goat's head eat the cheek it tastes just like pot roast. But he used to eat the brain, eyes and tongue. Also my ex-girlfriend's grandparents used to eat Hagas, now that is some nasty shit.

CHAIRMAN - My dad also loved those figs on a string. And my grandmother always had sour balls in the candy bowl. She also ALWAYS had chocolate covered cherries.
My mom actually ate carob straight from the tree, the most inedible substance on the planet, and that includes Heckler's deep fried shit!

my grandfather would eat the yellow flowers from the zuchini or squash plant, he would saute them in garlic and oil...
we also had a couple fig trees that he would wrap up before each winter... I didn't care too much for the figs when i was a kid, too many seeds it seemed like...
gizzards - it only seemed like the "older" people would eat these parts of the turkey...

My grandfather used to put Vanilla Wafers in a glass, then fill the glass with milk, mush the stuff around, and eat it with a spoon. Delicious!
My grandmother would cut an apple in half, cut away the seeds, then use a teaspoon to scrape the apple insides and in essence eat fresh apple sauce. Yum!
Now I'm starvin, too. Damn you, Kaga!

Cucumber sandwiches. And I still see little old Italian women picking dandelions along the parkways.
Ow, my eye, my doctor told me not to get pudding in it

My grandma used to always eat olive loaf and liverwurst. I have great uncles who love honeydew (which is damn tasty). My other grandparents used to eat horse radish. Did everyones grandparents also have really old bananas always on display?
