Went to the B's game tonight (friend had extra ticket, sweet!). Good game that ended in a tie and with the Rangers loss the Bruins are in!

Have you actually gone to a devils game? Lamest fans ever. I believe I saw a post stating they would pick some playoff tix a few days after they go on sale! The Avs have an almost identical pattern of winning of late, regular season and cup wins, and they sold out almost 400 straight home games and the playoff tix sold out in 20 minutes for the first round. I actually feel bad for what is a great team, and I hate the Rangers.

As for the playoffs, there are going to be FIVE teams with over 100 points in the West. I know the OTL point has something to do with this, yet it still is amazing. To pick a favorite in the West is rough. I agree with DK that Minn could possibly upset in round one, but not Edmonton. I hope they do, yet the top four seeds are tough with only Cloutier being the suspect goalie. Turco, Cujo, and Roy can win the Cup by themselves, yet only Roy has so far. Turco is young, but my Vezina winner this year edging Marty B.

The East is confusing, as Phily looks better, but look between the pipes and loose confidence. Same with Boston and NYI, as they have a true weakness in goal. I like the chances of Ott this year due to added grit and hope TB's youth could take out the caps. Jersey has very light offensive abilities and did nothing to work on it at the deadline, so I'd be surprised if they come out of the East. I guess my biggest wish in the East is that the hoods in Toronto get outed in the first round.

That's absolutly true, one of the best parts about the Western Conference is that they weed each other out. Giving way for the possibilty of a lower seed taking the conference thus giving the Eastern Conference a better chance.

As you can see, the big guns always make the big show. And with the exception of New Jersey, who is 66% in the Stanley Cup Finals in the past 10 years, (loss to Colorado 2001 & wins vs. Detroit 1995 and Dallas 2000) the east has had very limited success. If there has been a conference that doesn't always send its best team, its the east. Look at the likes of Florida in 1996, Washington in 1998, Buffalo in 1999 & Carolina in 2002. All these teams were middle seeded teams at best, yet were able to take out the top teams in the east (NJ, Tor, Phil, and Ott). Although, NJ is the only team that I consider a top team in the east, as the best here don't compare to the power of the west (Colorado/2 Cups, Detroit/3 Cups, and Dallas/1 Cup). NJ has two also, but the rest, 0.

I think you took what I said the wrong way. All I was saying is, in my opinion the Western Conference is 10 times more talented than the East. However, the East doesn't have to meet the West until the Finals, which gives them a better shot at winning the Cup simply because sometimes the best team doesn't even come out of the West as champions. They weed all of themselves out, which can sometimes allow the East a chance to play a team that isn't as good as a team they should be facing. Anyway, I have a horrible vocabulary, so if that makes any sense let me know.

I would counter that by saying the West is not as strong as its been in the past.

Dallas-Turco's still recovering from injury, plus Guerin is a large part of their offense..

Colorado- Has played more games than anybody over the last 5 years than anybody by a large amount, and I don't think they have the energy to mount another long playoff run

Vancouver- I simply don't trust Cloutier(or Alex Auld) in the playoffs, Same with Ottawa and Lalime...And i also don't like teams that really only have one good line(Naslund, Morrison, Bertuzzi)

Detroit- Another team with age issues...and CuJo has never really been all that good in the playoffs. Neither was Hasek, but Hasek at least carried the Sabres a li'l bit..

I would not be surprised if Detroit, Dallas, or Colorado gets knocked off by one of the lower teams in the conference...I think Couver will win at least a round...

I did understand and pointed out that one of the big three western teams always represents for the Stanley Cup. The possible trend you speak about does however happen in the East.

Some good points, yet Turco never missed a step (or Dallas for that matter with Tug / without G), Detroit has some good young talent this year, Colorado is playing its best hockey and the prize is enough to motivate, but Vancouver does have a weekness in goal. Also, they probably match up vs. the Wild, a very potent playoff team and system. Detroit or Dallas will kill Edmonton, whoever gets Anaheim might get a little scare, Colorado usually owns St. Louis but they've added some grit and don't have slow-mo Turek in net. So I say at least three of the four winners will be of the big four in the West this year. The Wild have the best chance to upset the Canucks, who have gotten great scoring from the second line this year (Linden).

The Isles cannot stop Ottawa.I see the Sens scoring quite a bit.
As much talent as Boston has,N.J.'s systnm is too good and they move on to second round.
Tampa Bay. as poor as they are on defense, I see them upsetting the Washington team.
Toronto v.Philly will be a great series...I think Toronto's new additions and experience takes this series.........
Edmonton absolutely cannot beat Dallas in this series...
Minnesota has made this season by keeping games low scoring,something they will be unable to do against colorado
St.Louis v. Vancouver.......I see St.Louis winning this with extreme amounts of grit

I think my point about how important playoff experience was to goaltenders was made tonight....there are certain guys who just can't get it done...Cechmanek, LaLime, and Turco all looked like garbage tonight...

Easy killer, that was game 1 for all. I loved it, but all great goalies start somewhere. Turco played quite well, with the exception of the first goal. Remember, Roy won the Cup as a rookie champ!

And then DC reed follows with the same prediction! Can you be any more of a homer? Fuck, I lost any respect for your picks, especially with DC dissing the West, winners of all but one cup since 1996. The caps might even loose the series since Jagr can't take the rigors of playoff hockey anymore and the young legs of the Lightning are playing great. Regular season series stats don't mean shit boys. The lightning have a goalie who hasn't played well yet, but can steal a whole series. I pick the Lightning in 6 here. NJ in 6. Would be quicker if they had any offense. Philly in 6, even though they lost game one already. Ottawa in 6, ditto. As for the West, the wings in 5, Avs in 5, Canucks in 7, and Oilers in a big upset/6 games.

yeah, but how many times does a guy like Roy (easily the greatest goalie EVER) come along?

I still marvel at that 86 playoffs today...Roy was only 19 freakin years old...

maybe it woulda been different if Steve Smith hadn't put the puck in his own net.

Im a caps fan, but im not a homer, i don't think theyll get out of the East, cause they don't play D well enough. Their only hope is to outscore everybody, and if they run into a team like Toronto that plays good D and can score, theyre in trouble.

Then again, in 98(the infamous "Dog and Pony Show playoffs), i never thought theyd get to the finals...

I must admit I am surprised at all hell at that Isles team that played in Ottawa last night. But there is a key rule here...regular season is regular season. Playoff season is playoff season.

Goes for any sport, doesnt matter what you did in regular season, cause the playoffs is a whole new season.

It's called strategy. Criticizing for trying to win is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. Nobody criticized the Bucs for not letting teams score more. But I didn't find the game boring at all. Funny how the losing side is always bored......

The caps might even loose the series since Jagr can't take the rigors of playoff hockey anymore and the young legs of the Lightning are playing great. Regular season series stats don't mean shit boys.

Caps owned em in game 1, AT TAMPA, then destroyed them in game 2, AT TAMPA. The whole idea of having home ice advantage is now gone. Think the caps fans were too ancy to predict a sweep? Why shouldnt we be, we just finished a TOUGH canadian road-trip, against elite 10 teams, including a win over Ottawa in Ottawa.

Tampa Bay finished a road-trip against teams they are 14-2 against this season, it was a cake walk. So who was better prepared for the playoffs? A team that has played the best in the league, or a team that got to play cupcakes and LOSE to ATLANTA.

And not to mention, Khabibulin has really sucked it up in Tampa these past games, and hes gonna get a "two-point conversion" when he comes to MCI Centre.

Caps in 4, Most games this series will go is 5.
So when everyone said this series would go 7 games, they had thier heads up thier asses.

Caps wont goto the stanley cup, but theyll make sure everyone knows who's the real champ of the southeast.

This is why when i Goto Temple In a year, ill defect to 1st team Flyers, 2nd Caps.

Cause im sick of the caps dissapointment, they kill tampa in the first two, then decide to stop playing, sure, the refs did screw us in game 3, but dammit we coulda had 5 and 6. But as for now, GO DEVILS! Make me a Caps/Devils alliance sig too lol.

Things were looking to a Caps sweep, the pieces were there, and you gotta wonder how did it happen. But then again, where was Jagr? He did jack in the last 4 games. And what happened to our defense? we sucked! Lets hope for a better year next year, and maybe we can get some more pittsburg players for next year.

Ugh. Reed my friend, let me tell you from experience.

I grew up a DIE-HARD Flyers fan. Good or bad from 85 - 00 they were my team. I and the rest of the Delaware Valley believed (there still are some) that a Cup was in our near future.

The Red Wings sweep us in the Cup finals.
Lindros not only became Mr. Concussion but also had Daddy fight his wars with Mr. Flyer and GM Bobby Clarke.
We have the inability to not only win a first round series but score a fucking goal or two or even three in the last few years playoff series FIRST ROUND!
After dismal playoff finishes Mr. Clarke has done nothing to improve the team and make the team playoff winners
We watched our "Superstar" flounder and the results of the massive trade go on to Stanley Cup Championships with the Quebec Nordiques (to me they will NEVER be the Avalanche) BAH!

It just got disheartening. Maybe it is just a Philly thing but we can only suffer so long before we not give up but just need to be shown. For instance, patience is runing THIN with the Eagles. They think "Oh, it is ok, WE got to the NFC Title game 2 of the last 3 years, we are winners". BULLSHIT! We want a title. 20 years has been too long.

Yes, I know this is a Cup thread but this proves my Flyers point.

Look at what the Eagles are doing this off-season and that is what the Flyers have done. The lack of commitment to winning in this town is a joke. Sure, the Flyers made some key aquisitions this year, but they will have to do some proving in the playoff and as I have seen in the first 3 games of this Toronto series they look nothing but lethargic and full of nothing promising.

Bottom line, there has to be some proof of a commitment to winning and actually giving a damn about what effect the lack of passion for said team has on the fans.

The Phillies FINALLY went out and spent some cash and the Sixers are a whole other animal. An exciting animal at that.

I am just saying don't be too quick to jump on the Flyers ship. All is not greener on the other side.

In the past three years we have gone from a defensive team with some offense, to an offensive team with no defense, now to an offensive team with some defense.

The Caps are a primarily European team, european hockey is more elegant, and faster, relying on skill and finnesse to win games.

The North American Hockey style is basically kick em when hes down. The flyers do this, the maple leafs do this, and it works. When you play philly its just one continous fight untill the final siren.

The capitals have always been about scoring a goal and holding the lead. That was Wilson's system. Cassidy's system is to build the ENTIRE TEAM around JAGR.

Why Cassidy's system won't work, and doesn't work.

1. Jagr is not a player favorite, hes not a team leader, hes just a player who can deke like crazy.

2. Bondra, not Jagr, is our power play man, if Bondra is not being used effectively on the right side, then he's not worth having on the PP. Jagr is too much of a show off to benefit the power play, he holds the puck, he tries and deke in and it does nothing but throw the puck into the neutral zone.

3. We need rough defensemen, Bondra got an ass raping, and Jagr was Kubina's bitch. Who stood up for them? Noone. Tampa Bay rolled over our stars unopposed, and when they play the Devils, will find its not gonna be like Washington.

4. Cassidy is offensive minded, our team is not. Our defensemen are good stallers and trappers, not 1v1 match-up playes. Our offense can trap and score if they are patient, Cassidy isnt.

5. Younger players aren't getting Ice Time. We knew we weren't going to win the series in Game 6, so we should have played Peat, Fortin, Yonkman and Sutherby. They are the caps future, get em some playoff expierence while thier young, it will only help us in the long run.

Cassidy is a good coach, but he's too quick to believe Jagr is the best man on our team. He needs to get off the Jagr high and start realizing, Zubrus, Sutherby, Bondra, Gonchar and Nylander are the true heroes of the season.

Well I managed to stay quiet for all this time, even with the likes of DC's rips! I'm still waiting for him to fess up and admit I was right. Exactly right (Bolts in 6)! Homerism is gay, not Tampa Bay (or gay as some retarded posters have put it). Here's what our buddy Reed wrote on the 15th....."Spoon, are you a bolts bitch?
Caps owned em in game 1, AT TAMPA, then destroyed them in game 2, AT TAMPA. The whole idea of having home ice advantage is now gone. Think the caps fans were too ancy to predict a sweep? Why shouldnt we be, we just finished a TOUGH canadian road-trip, against elite 10 teams, including a win over Ottawa in Ottawa.
Tampa Bay finished a road-trip against teams they are 14-2 against this season, it was a cake walk. So who was better prepared for the playoffs? A team that has played the best in the league, or a team that got to play cupcakes and LOSE to ATLANTA.

And not to mention, Khabibulin has really sucked it up in Tampa these past games, and hes gonna get a "two-point conversion" when he comes to MCI Centre.

Caps in 4, Most games this series will go is 5.

The closest you came to predicting something right was that the "caps won't go to the stanley cup", for stating games 1 and 2 statistics just doesn't impress me. They are a bunch of goons for this era of hockey and the protection of stars, yet nothing compared to the backyard wrestling of hockey past. If he can't win with skill, coaching isn't an option for him, he simply evens the odds with cheap shots that injure the likes of the other team's top players. If you question calls after you WIN, its smart to position yourself as to get or not take the calls that are in question. Enlighten the refs to situations they might be missing or misinterpreting.

Yes, I actually use a dual tuner Tivo to watch and record (for later use) all the games. I saw all the penalties and the slash was simple, you can shoot, or in the case you're talking about, clear/pass the puck, yet control must be maintained. Stay out of the way?? For real? Jagr is another pussy story in himself. The phantom elbow you speak of I don't recall. But I can assure you he took many uncalled cheap shots (surely they weren't effective since it was Jagr though) that weren't called. I play hockey, as I seem to recall the same for you, so it's natural that as the playoffs progress, roughing is much more subjective to the time of game, which game it is, which round it is and who its on. Jagr doesn't get the benefit to roughy calls often since he dives, yet due to his skill and puck-handling he draws a ton a interference calls. I have no interest in the bolts other than they were not going out in 4 to the lowly caps system. And to answer your question, once! The most important year of all, THIS YEAR! Did you notice they also made it to the second round so far? Your lack of integrity in loss is disheartening, as I used to respect your hockey posts. Now you have two strikes against you, homerism "Caps in 4" and the whinny Jagresque "the officials made us loose and have always hated us" or your inability to admit you were a homer.

I haven't written to cry about some suspect charging calls the Avs Foote and Blake took immediately after garning leads in game 7 against the Wild. Why? The avs put themselves in a position to be beat and or hurt by calls. When you have a team on the ropes 3 games to 1, the officials didn't take the series away from you with a call here or there. Hell, I've always known that Frasier sucks as a ref, but it goes both ways as seen in the "holding a broken stick" call against the Wild in that same game. I blame the Avalanche's lack of killer instinct, inability to hold a lead, and awful penalty kill which stayed with the passive box system that had them ranked in the bottom of all playoff teams this year.

I am lucky however in that I get to voice my disdain for the system in the near future. I will be at a table in a wedding soon in which Tony Granato will be attending. You DC boys will soon know the likes of groom, your newest O-lineman and multi-million dollar steal, Hofstra's own, Dave Fiorre. Good guy I've know for quite some time and it should be fun.

DC, keep the character in hockey and look to next year, and root for an underdog or something this year. Don't turn hockey into basketball. Just stop crying, its over Johny, I mean Reed. For both our teams.

A great series with the Roenick, Chelios, Belfour, and the normal regiment from Colorado.

I remember Roenick's game-winner from right in front of Roy very well & the trash talk that took place thereafter...I just took it for granted when it was said that he used the line again that it was true.

That was one of the hardest played series I've ever seen. Chicago won two OT games, Colorado won a 2OT and a 3OT game. I was rooting for Chicago because I was a huge fan of Belfour/Roenick.Chelios, but like Forsberg & Sakic as well and rooted for Colorado the rest of the way through the playoffs.

They went on to an absolutely brutal series with Detroit. Unfortunately, that was the year of Beezer & the Rat...which made for a pretty boring 4-0 sweep of the cup over the Panthers.

This Dallas-Anaheim game 1 is great. Anaheim is gonna burn themselves out with all these ovetime marathons. At least they had some time off before this one. Dallas is probably feeling it.

I was dissapointed that the game was over (I want Anaheim to win though)...then when they were reviewing it, I felt a sense of hope...now we are about to go into the 4th OT....Hockey is fucking great.

Oh, I couldn't agree more! I knew the Avs fans truly understood hockey last year when they started the "Fraser Sucks" chant at the start of a regular season game. Yet here he is working the second round of the playoffs? He loves to control a game, as opposed to letting the teams decide the games.

On another note, certain players have impressed me during these playoffs. Here are a few and excuse my spellings as I'm not about to look them all up. Walz, Park and Zholtok of the Wild; Turco, Zubov and Modano (awesome again) of the Stars; Madden, Langenbrunner, and Marty of course on the Devils; St. Louis and Sarich on the bolts; Roenick, Rechi and Yushkevich on the Flyers, Lalime, Redden and Hossa of the Senators; Giguere, Carney and Sauer of the Ducks; Naslund, Ohlund and Jovanoski of the Canucks.

The sens may be in the process of not making it to the conf. finals again huh? A Flyers/Devs matchup would be awesome, yet the advantage in net is surely in favor of the devs. As for the ducks, what gives? Nobody, and I mean nobody upsets the number 2 and number 1 seeds in the playoffs to reach the conf. finals. I would love to see if it has been done before, let alone in only nine games to get there. I know the rangers beat the #1 seeded nordiques in 1995, but lost in the sems. Anyone have anything?

Ok...now for my observations about this playoff season....It would appead that the BEAST is the EAST again this year. All four of the top scedes (seeds??) made it. While in the west...never have so few done so much with so little. What in the hell happened? The DUCKS are 7-1 in the playoffs?? Smacking around the best teams? Yes my friends...it seems like they are the Cinderella team of the playoffs...which is ironic since their owners own the rights to Cinderella as well.
And the WILD are taking it to Vancouver. I hate to say it...but aside from the Devils, the west is the most exciting hockey to watch.

Now as for the Devils...it would be very interesting if they faced off against the Senators. Ottowa is the only team the Devils have a problem with. (Guess the Rangers do not qualify anymore).
And irony #2 would be if the Devils faced the Ducks in the Finals, which at this point may very well happen, it would be the Mickey Mouse francise against the team the "great one" (great jerk is more like it) called a Mickey Mouse organization.
