I had COMPLETELY forgotten this until the recent pictures jogged my memory and I refreshed it with my dad.

In 1996, my mother, father and I took a trip to visit my father's family in Syria. He is from the Golan Heights there. Well, he WAS until about 1967, but that's another thread.

Anyway, it was a pretty LONG ass visit, and 3 weeks after we arrived we were MORE than ready to leave. On the way out my father noticed a scared young woman having a lot of trouble getting on the plane. So he helped he out with some paper work and we all got on.

It was a pretty quiet flight. Actually, my father had to translate for some guy how had a problem with his leg too. He was REALLY on call that trip. They had a ambulance waiting at JFK for the poor guy. He was pretty sick.

Anyway, that same young woman had A LOT of problems in NYC too. That's when we found out her FULL story.

She was a Kurdish Refugee from Iraq that had fled ON FOOT to escape Saddam. She left her homeland with a small group of people and traveled only by night until she crossed ALL THE WAY into Syria. When she arrived she had to soles left in her shoes. In Syria, the Red Cross assisted her with the things she needed to live. They and the UN also located her some of her family in the US and had given her a special passport to get here.

So after a few hours of paperwork, she was permitted to enter the country. But that wasn't it! Her family and future husband were like 3 fucking hours late! We had to sit and keep her company the whole time! I mean, we'd helped her that long! I was afraid we were gonna have to take her home. But they showed up and all was well. Never saw her again. Hope she's well.

It's a story that hit pretty close to home. Everytime I hear the war is a mistake, I now remember this story about a scared young woman who risked her life to get away. ANYTHING was better than living under the Iraqi leadership of Hussein.

Thanks Alice. My dad was really looking out for her that trip, and I was proud to be his son.

Also, I know I totally messed the topic name up.

How disturbing. What was even MORE disturbing was that I'm reading about en execution on ONE side, and seeing a naked woman pressing her tit under her arm on the other side.

Thanks guys and gals. Didin't want to brag about my dad as much as I wanted to show HOW DESPERATE these poor people were to get the fuck out of Iraq AT ANY COST. Death in the wilderness or by being caught running was better than her condition. So she and a few others ran, just hoping that Syria would accept them as refugees and take care of them.
