The Boston Bruins fired head coach Robbie Ftorek and assistant coach Jim Hughes Wednesday, after the team slipped to seventh place in the conference after a hot start.
Bruins general manager Mike O'Connell will take over head coaching duties on an interim basis.
"This change is being made at this time because of this team's record over our past 46 games and the fact that, fairly or unfairly, the coach is judged on the record," said O'Connell.
The team's record is 14-24-5-3 over the last 46 games. There are nine games left in the regular season. Ftorek was the 10th head coach for the Bruins in 18 years.
"My focus has to be on winning those games, clinching a playoff position and getting this team performing in a consistent enough manner to do some damage in the playoffs," O'Connell said.
Assistant coach Wayne Cashman will remain with the team in the same role. Mike Sullivan, who was in his first season as head coach of the Providence Bruins, will join the Boston staff as an assistant coach.
Providence assistant coach Scott Gordon will assume the head coaching reins with the AHL Bruins for the remainder of the season.
O'Connell has been the Bruins general manager since Nov. 1, 2000.
I'm glad he's gone. He's been fucking with the lines too much latley. I just wish someone other than O'Connell was taking over.
