View Full Version : Old PSAs had more heart

I miss the old PSAs from my childhood. They were creative. they had heart and soul. Whatever happened to the "cigarette mash" and "one dumb move"? Those were classic! how about "cross on the green, not in between" with the blood pooling on the asphalt from the car crash? That's what a PSA should be. either catchy and groovin, or so terrifying so that a child is scarred for life. None of this "weed is helping terrorists bullshit". Now maybe if they set it to music . . .
anyone else have some classic PSAs from when they were kids?

Holy shit, I was just thinking about this shit the other day. I remember this PSA from early childhood (early '70s). It was about prejudice. It was this scary cartoon guy, all red faced, smoke coming out of his ears, snarling, walking straight at you out of a cloud like he was gonna come right thru the screen.
And they had this little song: who does hate hurt most, hate hurts you!
I probably saw that thing once in my life. I think it was the middle of the night because I was up sick or something. Still scares me just thinking about it.
Mr. Corleone is Johnny's Godfather. To the Italian people, that is a very religious, sacred, close relationship.

I too miss the "this is your brain; this is your brain on drugs" bit.
I also recall vividly the M.A.D.D. one with the 2 glass beer steins coming in, held by skeleton hands, and smashing together to the sounds of a car wreck. It scared me enough to make sure I always have cab/train/bus fare when I get drunk.
I also remember the 'cross on the green, not in between', but never really understood it. I'm from the boonies, so I'd never experienced traffic lights as a pedestrian. . .until I was 8 and I went into NYC for a Reading Rainbow audition.
How about Smokey the Bear? "Only YOU can prevent forest fires; only you." We still have a Smokey the Bear sign at the top of the mountain road leading into my hometown. It tells you the level of fire danger in the forest. I'm sure it reads "LOW" right now.
And whatever happened to that old "Reading Is Fundamental" project ?
And Nancy Reagan and the "Just Say No" / "Right to Say No" commercials. . . cheesy 80's music: "Don't let a friend push you into takin' drugs; you've got a riiiight to say 'no', 'no', (a) right to say 'no'"
Ahh, those were the good old days. . .

One of my memories of Bob McAllister's "Wonderama" were the PSAs for "Cross at the green...not inbetween!" I wish there was a site for these old PSAs.

Anyone remember those cheesy "One to grow on" PSAs? They used to aire on Saturday mornings during cartoons in th 80's. Stars like Jason and Justine Batemen would host them. They would resolve conflicts like a kid ruining her dads expensive camera, and a fat sun burned white kid getting mad at a black kid for saying he looked like a big fire truck by saying he has a permanent sunburn. Ouch.

Craig, you have now gotten that stuck in my head now. If I still had my stump, I'd smash you with it. . . oh heck, who'm I kidding? I'm not into violence; it never solves anything.
How about the commercials when they changed the name for the Girls' Clubs of America to 'Girls Incorporated' . . . the spotlight on the little girl and the voice-over "her best friend was pregnant at 13. . ." and then the little girl starts singing. . . ?

I have brought this tune up in several threads. I have been looking for that song on the net for 3 years to no avail. It aired on channel 11 WPIX. If anyone knows where I may be able to find it please drop me a line.
