Piazza, Mota involved in shoving match last spring

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Mike Piazza charged the mound and started a bench-clearing brawl Wednesday night after he was hit by a pitch from Guillermo Mota during the Los Angeles Dodgers' 13-6 win over the New York Mets in a split-squad game.

Piazza

Piazza and Mota had a shoving match last year in spring training after he hit the star catcher with a pitch.

This time, Mota's first pitch to Piazza in the sixth inning was inside, and his second hit him in the back of the left shoulder.

Piazza immediately charged the mound, with his right fist cocked for a punch, and Mota threw his glove at him and began backpedaling away.

"If he wants to hit somebody he needs to stand there and fight," Mets manager Art Howe said. "He backpedaled faster than I can run forward."

Both benches emptied, with Mets outfielder Jeromy Burnitz leading the chase after Mota while Piazza was restrained on the mound by several Dodgers. Mota made it to the dugout without being caught.

An irate Piazza, red-faced and glaring with rage, yelled at Mota while being restrained by coaches and umpires. Twice he tried to charge the first-base dugout, but was held back both times.

"It was intentional, and they knew it, too," Howe said. "It was a setup."

After Mota hit Piazza in the hip with a pitch last March, he waited until the pitcher was coming off the field in the eighth inning and grabbed him by the jersey, but no punches were thrown.

"Obviously, he remembers the fact that the guy reached up and tried to choke him a year ago," Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said. "I'm sure major league baseball will sort this out, we'll sort this out and we'll move on."

Both Mota and Piazza were ejected. No punches appeared to land during the fight.

"This boils down to nothing more than history between the two guys that started at Holman Stadium last year and carried itself over," Tracy said. "I think the thing that needs to be done in a case like this is for both sides to work very hard to get it resolved and get it over with.

"The last thing you want in the case of the Dodgers and the Mets is work as hard as we do and then feel like a season is going to start and you're going to be without players."

Piazza left the ballpark while the game was still going without speaking to reporters.

Mota also left the stadium during the game and did not comment. The pitcher hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth off Mets closer Armando Benitez.

Mota was once a shortstop in the Mets organization.

The Mets and Dodgers are scheduled to play two exhibition games against each other this weekend in Mexico City. They play once more in Florida during spring training, on March 25.

"I knew after the first pitch, it looked like intent out there," Burnitz said. "Bottom line, I thought it was wrong. You saw how I reacted."

Finally he snaps. It took a lot. Mota was such a puss. How much of a coward can one man be. Spread the word, Mike ain't a fag.

Nice to see Burnitz actually doing something for a change.

if I got hit on purpose I am going to carry my bat a little ways down to first and then throw it with all my might like a tomahawak at the pitchers legs...

it's pretty much useless rushing the mound, the catcher jumps you from behind and the pitcher runs behind his teammates...

maybe after a few pitchers take a Louisville to the knees, they'll cut out hitting people on purpose...

i don't want to hear "hitting someone is part of the game", people can get seriously hurt...

If I was Bobby Valentine, I would have took my team off the field after the time Clemons threw the broken end of the bat towards Piazza, until they took Clemons out of the game. He had just cause and it would have turned the series around!

Mota hit Piazza last Spring training also. Pizza was pissed but didn't rush the mound. It's good for him to finally go after this little twerp. Last spring everyone lambasted Piazza for not killing Mota.. saying why go after someone who is only going to be in the minor leagues this year. That hit was intentional and Mota should get suspended.

At least Burnittz showed he can actually hit something. :)

I was watching the game last night and I have to say that the whole thing looked like the chase scene at the end of a Benny Hill show. After Mota threw the glove, he ran for the dugout. Piazza was so pissed that four Dodgers had to hold him back. Burnitz got a hold of Mota at the first base coach's box but a bunch of Dodgers peeled him off. Joe McEwing made a nice showing during the chase as well. Nice to see the Mets stick up for each other like that. The Mets-Dodgers series' just got more interesting.

im a dodgers fan... im kind of glad that piazza went after mota. i was hoping mota would get hurt to free up some pitching spots for better pitchers that they have, but piazza is still a pussy he went after a weak foreign pitcher.. he got smacked upside the head by clemens and had a piece of lumber thrown at him and did nothing but give googly eyes to clemens..piazza is one who would only fight the weak guy instead of fighting someone that would give him competition.. i would of loved to see him and gagne go at it.. that would of been a good fight especially with gagne being an ex hockey player.

You obviously do not remember the David Cone/Pedro Guerrero (Yes the same Pedro Guerrero of OJ fame) incident in like late April or early May of 1988, when after beaning Guerrero Coney pumped his arms in a "come on mother fucker, lets throw down" gesture. That was when the Mets used to still still have some of the better thugs/druggies including Darryl Eugene Strawberry...God that was a classic brawl where the pitcher did not back down.

"If he wants to hit somebody he needs to stand there and fight," Mets manager Art Howe said. "He backpedaled faster than I can run forward."

somebody give that man his rim shot

and Armando gives up a homer to Mota...i can't believe i miss Franco this much...where the hell is Randy Myers.

by the way, Piazza isn't gay...but Piazza wanting to take Mota deep? and loving two balls on him? that's score one on lovin' the brown eye.
