while i really don't agree with the list as a whole, there are some really good picks on there, that i was glad to see listed (and, of course, some glaring omissions). on the good side:
bright eyes - perfect (except for the part where they were at number 16)
radiohead, the streets, interpol, sigur ros - check.
in the "what the hell were they thinking" category, we have:
avril lavigne (most notably) - what the fuck?
dave matthews band - because there will always be college kids who smoke pot
the strokes - does anybody care anymore?
the hives - did anybody care ever?
linkin park - huh?
the donnas - just because they're chicks who play rock, it doesn't mean they're any good. spin should be ashamed putting them before sleater-kinney

6, 7, 9, 18, 24, 30, 31, 35, 36, 38 and 40 (Maybe ten years ago, when "Riot Grrrl" seemd "in".) are just crazy talk. What a silly, silly magazine.
I don't know what "selling out" really is, but Spin did it very loudly and sloppily a good three, four years ago. I think that Natalie Imbruglia cover was the death knell. Yeesh.

The White Stripes? third most important?
I think the emphasis is on "important," not necessarily "good." Linkin park is influences a lot of crappy bands that the general populace likes. The Donnas are "important" because chicks can rock too, really! And they make great comedians!

Linkin park is influences a lot of crappy bands that the general populace likes. the grammar king is slipping. good thing you have that nitpicking crown to keep you warm at night.
The Donnas are "important" because chicks can rock too, really!le tigre and sleater-kinney are both on the list and are both far better than the donnas. they're superfluous for this purpose

Holy Shit! That is hands down the worst list I have ever seen. I'm a pretty big fan of Eminem, but never in a million years would I consider him the most important artist making music of any time period, EVER. I agree with about 3 of those bands/artists being on the list.

Thanks ADF

SPIN as usual is telling the kids what all the record labels are paying them to tell and then throwing in a few indie bands to make it look good.
Bright Eyes - I really need to hear them. I don't know why I have not even grabbed a 7" along the way. Any recommendations would be good.
Eminem, Linkin Park, AVRIL LAVIGNE??? and 50 Cent?? - COME THE FUCK ON! Do intelligent people even concider this a credible source on music.
Queens Of The Stone Age - I agree with this one as they are just a great band
Radiohead - Need I say more! Pure brilliance PERSONIFIED!
The Donnas - OK, say what you will but I have been listening to them for a long LONG time and I am glad to see them progress into a great metal/hard rock band. I do however think that they are not as much as important as they are influential. If The Donnas are going to be mentioned as important, you also have to consider, Sleater-Kinney (a bit higher on the list please), Sahara Hotnights and Fabulous Disaster (can't forget the punk now can we?) Again, FUCK Avril Lavigne! She don't know shit about "punk" and it is amazing at how a naive teenager can meet record promoter and be dressed to fit the "rebel" part. WHAT GARBAGE!
Jimmy Eat World - I say maybe but if you are going to mention them, you need to also mention The Get Up Kids, who went in the complete opposite direction on their last record because they wanted to keep interested in creating new music (I respect that by the way) and Saves The Day who both kind of have the "Jimmy" sound but haven't broken as of yet. Put the Kids and Saves on a major and they break.
The Vines???? - Assembled GARBAGE! Will they even be around for a new record? Or has the garage sound died off in the mainstream. Sickening!
System Of A Down - Taking metal to new heights. I agree with this one.
As far as who are not on the list, where is AFI, Hot Water Music, Jurassic 5 (wait, they don't rap about bitches, money and your FUCKING Lexus, nevermind), Neurosis, The Melvins, Floor, Sick Of It All, The (International) Noise Conspiracy and Against Me! There are also countless numbers of DJ's, POSITVE hip-hop, METAL and other Indie/Alt rock bands who I am not familiar with who I am sure deserve a lot more respect and recogition than some of the TRIPE on this list.
These are just some of my picks here. Lists like this will always PISS me off!

I can't say that I agree with most of the list, but I was happy to see Wilco and the Flaming Lips get recognition. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots were my two favorite releases from last year.

Bright Eyes - I really need to hear them. I don't know why I have not even grabbed a 7" along the way. Any recommendations would be good.best band in the history of the world EVER. i'd suggest you pick up either "fevers and mirrors" (which includes the song "arienette") or "lifted or the story is in the soil, keep your ear to the ground" as a starter. but anything that you listen to will be fabulous.

Cool Arinette, i will have to hunt ome of it down. I have my sources.
I also cannot believe that not only did Spin forget but I FORGOT to mention WEEN!
I think that Ween is just one of the most amazing bands out there and have a sound completely all their own. They can cover all of the bases and proclaim that their newest album is their "brownest" ever. THAT is a good sign!

Spin is by far the worst magazine and they have a history of putting out shameful lists. they (as far as i know) are an alt rock mag that is tyring to identify with a wider audience. Frankly i cant agree with most of that list. i mean, how can you put shit like avril lavigne on the list, or jay-z, who i really like, but not alecia keys? she has put out probably the best album in YEARS. if its not your bag, fine, but you cant deny that sisters got sooooooooul. she singlehandedly brought the neo-soul inderground to the mainstream, if not only for a feew moments.
Getting back to the list, if they had named it "most influential people in the music idustry" im okay with that, eminem has definately got a lot of influence in the industry, but he sho as fuck aint important to the industry

This is kind of off topic, but I'd just like to say that I don't think Audioslave is that bad.
See how easy it is for me to like Rage Against the Machine? They have to ditch the asshole lead singer, and get as far away as possible from the annoying political songs. And then hire the guy from Soundgarden.
Simple as that.

hell yeah The Strokes and The Hives are important. i care. cuz they're GOOD. they're certainly better than the white stripes, or dashboard goddamn confessional. or coldplay. and i cant stand the donnas and their weakass lead singer. she sounds like a karaoke bar patron. the lead from Sahara Hotnights can wail. a lot like mary wilson use to, only 1/3 the size.
spin blows. the only thing they ever get right is giving radiohead their due.
