Not The Tribe and The Low End Theory, but the new cigarette..
Has anyone heard of these or smoked them?
I first saw an ad for them while taking a piss in a bar (one of those urinal stall ads). Now I'm seeing them in regular magazines.
The cigarette comes in three different versions, with three progressively lower nicotine levels. The lowest one has "no nicotine." All three versions, however, have 10 mg. of "tar"....the stuff that gives you cancer.
So the company apparently has come up with a way to sell cigarettes but I guess is trying to insulate themselves from claims that people got cancer and couldn't help it because they weren't "addicted" to the cigarettes.
Interestingly, right next to the usual Surgeon General's Warning is another warning that states "WARNING:This product is NOT intended for use in quitting smoking. Quest is for smokers seeking to reduce nicotine exposure only."
What's next, alcohol free Jack Daniels and cocaine free crack? I'm all up for smoking some baking soda....

Maybe you can just suck on the tailpipe of a Nissan Quest. Probably has the same amount of carcinogens and great flavor!

I've read that it's being used as a marketing ploy to get kids smoking again. The tobacco companies have been losting lots of money as the number of underage smokers has decreased.

I saw a nice ad for it in Time magazine. Looks pithetic. As the nicotine goes down... the price goes up. The ad was a nice catchy and pop-up one though!

That doesn't make sense to me for two reasons:
1) What kid is going to want to smoke a "nicotine-free" or special cigarette that is ostensibly marketed as a healthier alternative to ANYTHING? Kids who will smoke want to smoke "cool" cigarettes like Camel, Newport, Marlboro, Parliament. When was the last time you heard of an under age 18 year old who smoked Carleton Ultra Lights? To me, an under age kid who is going to smoke isn't caring about the tar nor nicotine. She/he is doing it to be more adult, "cooler" or as a result of peer pressure. Quest cigarettes don't seem to fit the "cool" category. In adolescence you want an M-80, not a sparkler. You want to look at Hustler, not Highlights for Children. You want to eat a #3 Super-sized not a tofu burger (usually). You want to smoke Northern Lights weed not hemp for making necklaces.
2) I can't see a tobacco company using Quest to "hook" new youthful smokers, since to "hook" them, you pretty much need the nicotine.
I DO see this product being used "off-label" by people for the exact reason that the warning label says it should not be used for...to withdraw from nicotine, similar to the patches. If you gradually step down your nicotine levels with Quest, you can still have the "taste" (tar) but you theoretically can be addressing your addiction easier than going cold turkey. I'm sure they would have liked to use this in their advertising., but the government wouldn't allow it because that would be an endorsement of smoking of a smoke that was perceived a safer alternative to other brands. Plus, the cigarette still has 10 mg. of tar, which is the stuff that causes cancer.
Some smoker out there go out and buy a pack and send me the bill. Post here about what it tasted like and what you thought of it.

You can look at it in another way:
Kids that have made the decision not to smoke bacause of the health hazards might now decide to smoke because they feel they won't be as hazardous and they can give in to the peer pressures they experience...
there is more to smoking than just taking in the nicotine, the holding, lighting, and generally the "cool" look that kids feel they obtain when doing it...
