My town wants to kill the geese!!!

I don't like stepping in bird shit either but there has got to be another way to resolve the Canadian Geese problem. Actually I didn't know they were such a problem to begin with.

Is this even legal??

Spring Lake Environmental Commission News : Canadian Geese

Both Spring Lake and Spring Lake Heights have applied for a permit from the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife, The Division of Migratory Birds, for the eradication of the Canadian Geese at Wreck Pond and vicinity. Should this permit be granted, the geese will be trapped during the months of April and May when they are molting and are unable to fly. They will then be destroyed. The purpose of this action is to improve the water quality at the beach and surrounding area. The Boro of Spring Lake has also applied for Grant 3129H which enables Boro to study Habitat Modification for the geese and other fowl around this area. If we receive the grant, we may be able to create a buffer between man and wildlife.

I didn't realize it until we had a goose problem at my hospital (we're on 85 acres), but there are two kinds, the migratory variety and the year round residents. The migratory are endangered apparently, and the problem is in telling the two apart since both kinds look so much alike. But it is interesting to see that for the past 5 years, the same gaggle of migratory geese has landed in the same place in front of my building. I know because one of them is missing a leg and I see it every year for a few weeks.

I know someone who eats them. He said that they are tasty, but a lot depends on what they are feeding on. The ones that eat a lot of grain are preferred to ones that eat stuff from ponds.

I could never eat a goose like that.

at the site where i work there is a large pond/mini lake and a helicopter landing pad nearby... The company opted for purchasing several dogs that would chase and harrass the geese... They built a kennel between the lake and helicopter pad...

the main concern was avoiding geese getting sucked into the blades or engine...

The town I live in was sly in how they controlled the goose population. They brought ina coyote to kill the geese. Unfortunatly someone shot the cayot before he completed the job.

My county also proposed doing this too, but the tree loving hippies were more interested in saving geese than they were in saving human lives. Go figure...
It is because of these people that I celebrate Earth Day in my own special way. I burn a few tires, take the muffler off my car, run over a few deer. It is beautiful.
