One of the true greats, a legend. I play her stuff, especially "Horses" and "Easter" on a regular basis. A pioneer who proved that women can rock.

Patty Smythe was the lead singer of "Scandal"("Goodbye To You", "Love's Got A Line On You") and went solo and had some success. She's married to John McEnroe, I think.

I don't believe you started a P.S. thread.I was just thinking of her this past weekend.
Iwas reminising how cool it was to show how much angst and anarchy you had in you while attending live shows.(i.e. giving the performer the finger). This led me to think about the time I saw Patty Smith at a local college.I know I have written about this before but it was hilarious.
Picture this.A really small theater with some ass in the front row, right in her face, flipping the bird all night.Patty's trying to be all dramatic in a performance art kinda way and she finally snaps. While she's singing "Frederick",she grabs this dude by the arm and pulls him onto the stage(what does she weigh 105 lbs.?) and drags him all the way across, exit stage left.
All this without missing a beat. That was cool.

She was always funny in concert. I remember seeing her in Central Park. She asked the crowd "does anyone have a cigarette"? Some jerk threw a box of smokes and hit her in the face and she cursed him out. In a rage, she then started "Rock and Roll Nigger". Funny stuff.

Heckler, if you had a time machine, you would travel back to 1974, true? Were you a huge punk fan back then? If so, my lord do you have some cred.

Horses was tremendous, but after that, I find her music pretty thin .
She just got too wound up in being 'artsy'.
I've always liked the story about how she supposedly broke her neck when she saw a beam of light coming off the stage and tried to walk on it, forgetting that gravity is not just a good idea, it's the law.

I was a huge punk fan because bands like Kansas, Styx and other "corporate bands" were jammed down our throats. The NY scene was a breath of fresh air. Besides, we all could play 3 chords and yell.
As for going back to 1974? Only if I could have dated a very young pre-bleached Debbie Harry.
